Best Medicine Season 2 Episode 2, “Breakin’ In Is Hard to Do,” turns what initially looks like Port Wenn’s latest piece of harmless chaos into an unusually personal problem for Louisa. Someone breaks into the town pharmacy and takes a collection of medical supplies, but mixed among them is Louisa’s time-sensitive fertility medication. Suddenly, Martin is not simply trying to work out who committed the robbery. He is racing to find a patient who may be in serious trouble while Louisa watches the remaining hours on her own treatment window disappear.

The episode also keeps Martin’s larger Season 2 problems moving. Port Wenn’s reaction to learning about his blood phobia is not exactly subtle, Eden remains convinced that his future is back in Boston, and Sarah accidentally gives Eden a piece of information about Martin and Louisa that she definitely did not already know. By the ending, all three stories meet in the woods, where Martin discovers why the pharmacy was robbed and Louisa has to make a much more personal decision.

Why Does Port Wenn Prank Martin?

The episode opens by showing the downside of Martin publicly revealing his blood phobia. The people of Port Wenn stage an elaborate fake emergency at the Salty Breeze using ketchup, apparently believing that teasing Martin is a harmless way of acknowledging his secret now that everyone knows about it.

Martin does not find it funny. For him, the joke connects directly to something that cost him his surgical career and continues to threaten his professional future. Eden is even more offended on his behalf and immediately frames Port Wenn as a place that does not appreciate who Martin really is. She tells him that once he gets his phobia under control, they can return to Boston, where she believes he will receive the respect he deserves.

That moment becomes important later because Louisa interprets the prank very differently. She understands why Martin hated it, but explains that Port Wenn was not rejecting him. In the town’s strange language, teasing him was a sign that the residents had absorbed his secret and still considered him one of their own.

What Was Stolen From the Pharmacy?

The real emergency arrives almost immediately afterward when Sally discovers that the pharmacy has been broken into. The missing items make very little sense if Martin assumes this was an ordinary robbery. The culprit takes a suture kit, bandages, gauze, rubbing alcohol and several vials of morphine, while leaving the cash behind.

There is also an apparent clue involving a box of extra-large adult diapers. Old Man Collins initially becomes a suspect, especially when Martin, Mark and Louisa discover that he actually did take the diapers. Collins, however, paid the exact price for them and explains that he uses the material in his planters to retain moisture. His only reason for sneaking around is embarrassment about being seen buying them.

The far more serious discovery is that Louisa’s fertility medication was stored close to the morphine and has disappeared as well. She explains that it is a trigger shot that must be taken 36 hours before her scheduled egg retrieval. Because the medication came from St. Louis and cannot simply be replaced locally, finding the thief becomes urgent for Louisa as well as for Martin.

Why Does Martin Think the Thief Is Helping Someone?

Martin quickly realizes that the pattern of stolen items looks less like someone collecting valuables and more like someone attempting to treat an injury without professional help. The sutures and bandages suggest that somebody has been hurt, while the morphine appears intended to manage the pain.

Then another break-in occurs at the Salty Breeze. Alcohol disappears along with Benadryl products from the restaurant’s mosquito supplies. Martin connects the two robberies and reasons that the injured person may have reacted badly to the morphine, forcing whoever is caring for them to find something for the reaction.

Another missing item sharpens his theory. A pair of long forceps disappears, leading Martin to suspect that someone is trying to remove something from an injury themselves. An albuterol inhaler is taken as well, suggesting that the patient’s breathing has started to deteriorate.

Martin has effectively reconstructed an entire medical emergency from the objects disappearing around Port Wenn. What he still does not know is where the patient is hiding.

Is Gina the Pharmacy Robber?

Gina Maria Afragola, the aggressive new Brooklyn pizza-truck owner parked beside the Salty Breeze, becomes Port Wenn’s easiest suspect. Greg and George already despise her because she is taking their customers, and her arrival around the same time as the thefts makes the accusation convenient.

Martin, however, becomes convinced that Gina is not responsible. He also notices that she keeps repeating phrases she hears. After speaking with her and observing that the repetition improves during physical activity but returns under stress, Martin says her symptoms are consistent with Tourette’s and latent echolalia.

That becomes the clue the investigation needs. Someone has heard Gina repeatedly saying that she “shot him,” creating the impression that she is confessing. Gina explains that she was actually lost in the woods when she passed a small cabin and heard somebody else shouting those words. Her echolalia caused the phrase to keep repeating afterward.

The poison ivy on Gina’s knees helps Louisa identify where she had been walking. The distinctive vegetation points them toward Nibbler’s Trail and the old hunting cabins nearby.

Who Robbed the Pharmacy in Best Medicine Episode 2?

The pharmacy robber is the teenage girl hiding in a remote cabin with Kyle. The two teenagers were supposed to be on a school trip in Vermont but instead slipped away to spend the weekend together. Kyle had brought his father’s hunting rifle, and it accidentally discharged while they were at the cabin.

Terrified that their parents would discover what they had done, the girl tries to care for Kyle herself rather than seeking proper medical treatment. She breaks into the pharmacy for sutures, dressings and pain medication, accidentally taking Louisa’s fertility medicine along with the morphine.

When Kyle reacts badly to the morphine, she searches for Benadryl. When he begins having trouble breathing, she gets an inhaler. The forceps are part of her attempt to deal with the original injury herself. Every seemingly random theft therefore comes from the same increasingly desperate effort to keep Kyle alive without involving adults.

Martin discovers that Kyle’s breathing problem is not an asthma attack. His condition has become much more serious, and Martin believes the girl’s attempts to stitch the injury have damaged his lung. He has to intervene immediately while they wait for emergency transport.

The scene also forces Martin to confront his blood phobia again. Eden helps keep him calm and focused while Louisa and the others assist. Martin manages to stabilize Kyle, and a medical helicopter arrives to take the teenager to the hospital.

Does Louisa Find Her Fertility Medication?

Yes. Once Kyle is stable, Louisa notices her missing medication among the supplies in the cabin, and she is still just inside the window for taking her trigger shot.

Finding it does not immediately solve the problem. After spending the entire episode desperately trying to recover the medication, Louisa suddenly freezes when the moment comes to use it. She begins wondering whether everything that happened is some kind of sign and whether she is really meant to become a mother.

Martin’s reaction is one of the episode’s most important moments. Rather than telling Louisa what her future should look like, he reminds her how long she has been planning, saving and working toward this decision. He asks her to concentrate on what she wants rather than allowing one frightening day to decide her future.

Louisa eventually goes through with the trigger shot. The episode does not establish that she is pregnant, because the medication is part of the process leading to her egg retrieval. What it does establish is that Louisa has chosen to continue pursuing motherhood despite her moment of doubt.

What Does the Ending Mean for Martin, Louisa and Eden?

The ending quietly makes the romantic situation more complicated. Earlier, Sarah reluctantly has lunch with Eden because Martin wants the two important women in his life to make an effort with each other. The meeting initially goes better than expected until Eden casually talks about Martin eventually returning to Boston.

Sarah is surprised because she sees Port Wenn as Martin’s home. While explaining that she once expected Martin to remain there, she accidentally mentions that she thought Martin and Louisa would end up together and then reveals their much-discussed kiss.

Eden now knows something Martin apparently never told her.

That makes Eden arriving during the search for Kyle particularly awkward. She repeatedly emphasizes how compatible she and Martin are, although the episode stops short of explicitly saying that her behavior comes from jealousy. At the same time, Louisa is the person who helps Martin understand what Port Wenn’s prank really meant, and Martin is the person who keeps Louisa from walking away from her motherhood plan.

The final Salty Breeze conversation keeps the question alive. Elaine wonders whether Eden might actually be better suited to Martin and whether he really belongs in Port Wenn. Sarah immediately rejects that possibility. As far as she is concerned, Martin is already Port Wenn through and through, whether he has realized it or not.

Episode 2 therefore resolves the pharmacy mystery but deliberately leaves its bigger emotional questions open. Louisa moves another step toward becoming a mother, Eden learns about Martin and Louisa’s romantic history, and Martin gets another reminder that the town he once considered temporary may have become much harder to leave.
