Coven Academy takes the familiar supernatural boarding-school setup and relocates it to one of America’s most atmospheric cities. Created by Tim Federle, the Freeform and Disney+ series follows Briar, Sasha and Tegan, three teenage witches studying at an elite magical academy in New Orleans while navigating friendships, rivalries and the much older forces surrounding their school. Malina Pauli Weissman, Jordan Leftwich and Ora Duplass lead the younger ensemble alongside Tiffani Thiessen as Miss Graves. New Orleans is important enough to the premise that the city almost functions like another character, but the production built most of that Louisiana world thousands of miles away in western Canada.

Where Was Coven Academy Filmed?

Coven Academy was filmed primarily in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The original pilot shot there from June 2 through June 17, 2025, before Disney ordered the project to series. Production then returned to the Vancouver area for Season 1 beginning December 5, 2025, with filming continuing into early March 2026.

That gives the series two distinct production phases. The June 2025 pilot established the look of the magical New Orleans setting and included one of the show’s most identifiable public locations, while the later shoot expanded the world for the full season. Vancouver’s combination of production studios, historic streets and experienced fantasy television crews made it a practical base for a series that needs both large interior environments and convincing exterior city scenes.

Gastown Became New Orleans

The clearest real-world location behind Coven Academy is Gastown, Vancouver’s historic commercial district. During the pilot shoot, parts of the neighborhood were specifically dressed to represent New Orleans rather than simply appearing as an anonymous city backdrop. Local filming coverage documented the overnight transformation in June 2025, with historic brick buildings and narrow streets helping create the older atmosphere needed for the series.

Gastown is an especially effective substitute because it contains some of Vancouver’s oldest surviving architecture. Brick facades, vintage-style street lamps and tighter streets give filmmakers a visual starting point that can be pushed toward the French Quarter through production design, signage and set dressing.

That does not mean Gastown is intended to reproduce New Orleans literally. Vancouver and Louisiana have very different architectural histories. The production is instead using selected streets for atmosphere, allowing the fictional supernatural version of New Orleans to feel old and layered without rebuilding every exterior on a backlot.

Harbour Light Alley Is a Confirmed Coven Academy Location

One specific filming site has been publicly identified: Harbour Light Alley at 5 Powell Street in Gastown. Coven Academy filmed there overnight on June 17, 2025, during work on the pilot. Local observers documented the production in the alley, and Hollywood North Buzz confirmed both the location and its use as part of the show’s New Orleans setting.

The location sits close to Maple Tree Square and contains the narrow, brick-lined visual character that works particularly well for a series about hidden magic existing alongside an ordinary modern city. Rather than placing every supernatural scene inside the academy, Coven Academy can use areas like this to suggest that the magical world extends throughout New Orleans.

Public production information has not yet provided a full scene-by-scene breakdown for the alley. It is therefore better to identify Harbour Light Alley as a confirmed filming location without claiming that a particular character encounter or magical sequence was filmed there unless the finished episode or production team establishes it directly.

Was Coven Academy Really Filmed in New Orleans?

Despite the story being explicitly set in New Orleans, Louisiana, the strongest production evidence places the actual shoot in Vancouver. An early Production List entry associated with the pilot listed New Orleans as a planned location, but contemporary Vancouver filming reports documented the pilot actually shooting in Gastown in June 2025. The full series production was subsequently listed in Vancouver as well.

That distinction matters because planned production information can change before cameras start rolling. In this case, the physical evidence from the shoot and the later Season 1 production records make Vancouver the reliable principal filming base.

Disney’s official promotional material continues to describe New Orleans as the characters’ home and the city they are destined to protect. New Orleans is therefore the story setting, while Vancouver provides much of the real architecture and production infrastructure behind it.

Season 1 Returned to Vancouver After the Pilot

Once Disney formally ordered Coven Academy to series in August 2025, production returned to British Columbia for the rest of Season 1. Industry records place the start of the main series shoot on December 5, 2025, with local production reporting scheduling filming through March 5, 2026. IMDb currently lists a slightly earlier February end date, so describing the shoot as continuing into early 2026 is more reliable than treating one specific wrap day as universally confirmed.

The Vancouver production was substantially larger than the short pilot shoot. Disney ABC Television Group, Chorus Boy and Bear Claw Productions are associated with the series production, with Tim Federle serving as creator, writer and executive producer. Shannon Kohli, Alexis Ostrander and Aprill Winney were among the filmmakers directing episodes beyond Federle’s pilot.

That expansion would have required more than street locations. The magical academy includes classrooms, communal areas and supernatural spaces that need controlled environments for lighting, effects and stunt work. However, no reliable public source currently identifies the exact soundstage or studio used for those interiors, so attaching a specific Vancouver facility to the academy would be speculation.

Is Coven Academy a Real School?

The magical school in Coven Academy is fictional. Disney describes the series as following witches and warlocks at an elite magic boarding school in New Orleans, but there is no real New Orleans institution viewers can visit under the Coven Academy name.

The screen version appears to combine constructed production environments with Vancouver exteriors. Gastown provides the older city surrounding the characters, while controlled sets can supply the more elaborate interiors where Briar, Sasha, Tegan and their classmates study magic.

That method is common in fantasy television because it gives the production freedom to create a school whose geography is driven by storytelling rather than the limitations of one real building. A corridor can lead into a classroom, ritual room or supernatural space without every part of the academy needing to exist inside the same physical property.

Vancouver Gives Coven Academy Its Gothic New Orleans Look

Coven Academy joins a long list of supernatural productions that have used British Columbia’s architecture and production infrastructure to create places far beyond Canada. What makes this shoot more interesting is that Vancouver was not being asked to disappear completely. Gastown’s age and texture became part of the show’s visual identity, with production design reshaping those qualities into its own stylized version of New Orleans.

The contrast also suits Federle’s approach to the series. Coven Academy mixes teenage relationships and school drama with a much older magical history, so the world needs to feel contemporary and historic at the same time. Vancouver can provide modern production facilities behind the camera while neighborhoods such as Gastown give the finished show the sense that its supernatural city existed long before Briar and her classmates arrived.
