Joe Washington does not get much of a recovery period in the Season 2 premiere of “Average Joe.” Episode 1, officially titled “67 Days Later,” finds him separated from Angela and Jennifer, drinking heavily at a motel and still dealing with everything Teddy Washington dragged into his life. Then photographs of Angela and Jennifer arrive from an apparent stalker, carrying a coded trail that points thousands of miles away to Cape Town, South Africa. Joe, Touch, Leon and Cathy follow it, only to discover that Teddy’s South African connections are much more recent than they should be. By the end of the episode, Joe meets Imani, a frightened young woman who identifies herself as Teddy’s daughter and makes an even bigger claim: Teddy Washington is still alive. Paramount+’s official material confirms that Season 2 moves Joe’s search to Cape Town and introduces Imani as a woman whose connection to his family changes what he believed about his past.
Joe’s Family Is Pulled Back Into Teddy’s Trouble
The premiere makes it clear that surviving Season 1 did not put Joe’s life back together. Angela and Jennifer are no longer with him, while Joe has settled into an ugly routine of motel rooms and alcohol rather than returning to anything resembling his old life. His friends are carrying damage of their own, particularly Leon and Cathy after the disastrous shooting that left Cathy wounded and Leon responsible for killing a man who turned out to be an undercover officer. Touch is also alive after his earlier suicidal crisis, although his behavior during the new mission shows that surviving it has not necessarily made him careful. The group’s problems are interrupted when the photographs sent to Angela and Jennifer establish that somebody connected to Teddy’s old world is watching Joe’s family again.

The photographs initially offer very little that the authorities can use. There is Russian writing connected to a photography business and what appear to be two useless phone numbers, but Cathy eventually recognizes that the numbers can be read another way. Rather than telephone numbers, they are coordinates pointing to Cape Town. That changes the photographs from simple intimidation into an invitation, or possibly a trap, specifically designed for Joe to follow. With Angela and Jennifer apparently being used as leverage, staying in Pittsburgh is no longer an option he is willing to accept.

Why Do Joe, Touch, Leon and Cathy Go to Cape Town?
Joe goes because he believes finding whoever sent the photographs is the only realistic way to remove the threat hanging over Angela and Jennifer. Touch, Leon and Cathy follow because this has long since stopped being Teddy Washington’s problem alone. The four have already lied, killed and covered for one another, leaving each of them tied to whatever comes next. Paramount+’s description of Season 2 similarly frames Cape Town as the destination Joe and his friends reach while trying to identify the new threat against his family. The official synopsis also makes clear that the South Africa storyline is directly connected to secrets from Teddy’s history rather than being an unrelated new criminal adventure.
Their welcome quickly proves how dangerous that history remains. The coordinates take them to an isolated location where a man approaches Joe claiming to have a message for him. Before he can explain anything, a sniper kills him, turning what looked like a meeting into an ambush. Touch’s decisions during the gunfight are reckless enough to worry the others, but he also has the presence of mind to obtain the dead man’s fingerprints. That small piece of evidence gives the group something far more useful than the original coordinates.

The Dead Messenger Leads Joe to Billy G
Identifying the messenger eventually sends Joe’s group to Billy G’s Bar Americana, where the dead man had apparently worked. The bar initially looks like another location in a deliberately complicated scavenger hunt, but Joe notices something far more personal there: a framed image connected to Teddy’s garage back in Pittsburgh. It is the first indication that Teddy’s connection to Cape Town was not merely criminal business conducted at a distance. Billy G eventually admits that he knew Teddy personally after Teddy once saved his life during an incident on a fishing boat.
More importantly, Billy knows exactly why Joe has come to South Africa. He admits that he was responsible for sending the photographs of Angela and Jennifer, but says he did it because Teddy instructed him to. That alone would be strange enough, yet Billy adds the detail that completely destabilizes Joe’s understanding of the past few months. According to him, Teddy personally gave him the photographs only about three weeks earlier. Joe has been operating under the belief that his father has been dead for months, so Billy’s account makes the accepted timeline virtually impossible.

Is Teddy Washington Really Alive?
Billy’s story provides the first major reason for Joe to consider that Teddy may have staged his death, but Episode 1 does not yet provide independent proof that Teddy is alive. Billy could be lying, could have been manipulated, or could be mistaken about exactly who contacted him. Joe has already learned that his father maintained an enormous secret life, however, which makes faking his death much easier to believe than it would have been at the beginning of Season 1. Teddy also appears to have constructed the Cape Town trail specifically so that Joe would keep moving from one clue to another.
Joe cracks another code that gives the group a local address, and the search continues there. The house is anything but safe, particularly after men who have followed them from the bar arrive and trigger another violent confrontation. Inside, Joe encounters an armed stranger who appears to be searching for a woman supposedly hidden somewhere in the building. Joe manages to kill him during their struggle, but his search of the room reveals that the stranger was right about somebody hiding there. A frightened woman is concealed inside the closet.

Imani Changes the Washington Family Story
The woman is Imani, played by Katlego Lebogang, one of Season 2’s major new characters. She initially has little reason to trust the Americans who have just crashed into an already violent situation, and questioning her produces few answers until Teddy’s name enters the conversation. Once Imani understands that Joe is Teddy Washington’s son, her attitude changes. She identifies herself as Teddy’s daughter, meaning that Joe has apparently discovered a sister whose existence he never knew about.
That revelation alone would justify the entire trip to Cape Town, but Imani follows it with the premiere’s biggest claim. She says Teddy is alive. For now, that should be treated as information Joe receives rather than an independently established fact, because Episode 1 does not end with Teddy walking through the door or provide another definitive confirmation of his survival. Still, Billy’s claim that he recently dealt with Teddy and Imani’s separate assertion that Teddy remains alive suddenly point in the same direction.
The Ending Turns Teddy’s Death Into Season 2’s Central Mystery
“67 Days Later” ends by changing the question Joe is trying to answer. He arrives in Cape Town looking for the person threatening Angela and Jennifer, but instead discovers evidence that the father whose criminal secrets caused the entire disaster may have been directing events from the shadows. Imani also transforms Teddy’s hidden life from a story about stolen Russian mob money into something much more personal, because Teddy apparently maintained another family connection that Joe never knew existed. Paramount+’s own description of Imani carefully says that her connection to Joe’s family changes what he knows about his past, while official Season 2 material promises further revelations about Teddy’s history.
The strongest reading of the premiere is therefore that Teddy’s death can no longer be accepted at face value, but his survival is not yet proven beyond doubt. Billy provides the suspicious timeline, Imani supplies the direct claim, and somebody has deliberately arranged an elaborate path for Joe to reach Cape Town. If Teddy really did fake his death, Joe has spent months paying for a father’s mistakes while that same father remained capable of manipulating events from afar. That makes finding Teddy more than another mystery to solve. For Joe, it becomes the difference between finally understanding his family and discovering that almost everything he thought he knew about it was constructed for him.
