Laura Linney’s Lianna looks human in Lanterns because the human appearance is not her natural form. Episode 3 confirms that Lianna is one of the Guardians of the Universe, the famously blue beings who control the Green Lantern Corps, but she deliberately presents herself as human when dealing with people on Earth. She tells John Stewart that she believes their interview will be more pleasant if she remains in human form. A flashback with John’s mother, Bernadette, makes the answer even clearer: Lianna says her natural appearance tends to upset humans and then reveals that form when Bernadette challenges her to prove she is an alien. The series therefore has not redesigned the Guardians as ordinary humans. Lianna is simply choosing an appearance that makes interacting with humans easier.
What does Lianna actually look like?
Lianna’s natural appearance is the more familiar alien Guardian form, rather than the Laura Linney appearance viewers initially see. Episode 3 does not linger on a clean, extended front-facing shot of her transformation, but it makes the distinction between the two forms explicit. When Bernadette doubts Lianna’s claim that she is an extraterrestrial being, she points out that the visitor simply looks like an ordinary white woman. Lianna responds that her natural form has proven disturbing to humans. Bernadette insists that she can handle it, prompting Lianna to reveal herself.
That scene is important because it removes the possibility that Lanterns has simply made its Guardians human. Lianna herself calls the Laura Linney appearance her “human form” and separately refers to another appearance as her “natural form.” Later, when John notes during his interview that Guardians are supposed to be blue, Lianna does not tell him that his information is wrong. Instead, she explains why she has chosen to look human while speaking with him.
Why does Lianna use a human form around John Stewart?
Lianna uses a human appearance because she believes it makes communication with John easier. When John immediately notices that something is wrong with what he is seeing, Lianna explains that the interview should be more pleasant if she remains in human form. Her decision therefore appears practical rather than an attempt to secretly deceive him. John already knows that she is a Guardian, and Lianna makes no effort to hide her identity once the conversation begins.

Her earlier encounter with Bernadette provides another reason for the choice. Lianna has apparently learned from previous interactions that humans can react badly to a Guardian’s actual appearance. That fits the larger problem she has come to discuss with the Stewart family, since the Guardians are beginning to recognize how poorly their methods translate to Earth. Their selection process has already caused emotional turmoil among Green Lantern candidates, including John Stewart Sr. Adopting a familiar face is a small attempt to reduce the distance between an ancient alien authority and the humans it is evaluating.
Are the Guardians normally blue in DC Comics?
Yes, the Guardians of the Universe are traditionally depicted as small, blue-skinned humanoid beings rather than human-looking adults. They are an ancient species associated with the planet Oa and are responsible for founding and overseeing the Green Lantern Corps. Their distinctive blue skin, white hair and relatively small stature have been part of their visual identity across decades of Green Lantern stories. John’s immediate observation that Guardians are “all blue” is therefore also a nod to what DC readers expect them to look like.
Lanterns is changing how that appearance is presented on Earth without discarding it entirely. The important distinction is that the series has introduced the human-looking Lianna first and then revealed that this is a form she can use. DC Comics has also previously played with Guardians taking human appearances when interacting more directly with people on Earth. The series is consequently adapting an existing idea rather than establishing that Laura Linney’s face is what all Guardians naturally look like.
Is Lianna shapeshifting or using some kind of illusion?
Episode 3 does not explain the precise mechanism behind Lianna’s transformation, so it would be premature to attach a specific rule to it. We know she can appear human and can reveal what she explicitly calls her natural form. What Lanterns does not yet establish is whether this is physical shapeshifting, a psychic projection, advanced Guardian technology or another use of their considerable cosmic abilities. Calling it a human disguise is reasonable in everyday terms, but the mechanics remain unknown.
That distinction may become relevant if Lanterns introduces additional Guardians. Lianna’s ability does not automatically mean every Guardian will spend the series looking human, nor does the episode establish that all of them use the same method when visiting Earth. For now, the safest conclusion is simply that Guardians in this DCU can apparently present themselves in forms better suited to interacting with humans. Lianna chooses Laura Linney’s human appearance because she considers it less unsettling.
Why show Lianna as human in the first place?
Within the story, Lianna’s human appearance allows her to approach the Stewart family without immediately terrifying them and later conduct John’s interview in an environment he can understand. It also creates a revealing contrast in her conversation with Bernadette. Bernadette refuses to accept Lianna’s authority simply because she claims to represent a cosmic civilization and demands proof before taking her seriously. Lianna has to drop the approachable exterior before the two women can have an honest conversation about what happened to John Sr.
That makes Lianna’s appearance more than a cosmetic change. Lanterns presents the Guardians as enormously powerful beings attempting to manage humans through systems they do not fully understand, and Lianna’s human form is one way of reducing that gap. The series has not abandoned the classic blue Guardians or secretly turned Laura Linney’s character into a human member of the Corps. Lianna is an alien Guardian using a human appearance by choice, and Episode 3 confirms that the blue, non-human being underneath it is much closer to her true self.
