Why Is the PEZ Dispenser Important in Silo? Could It Restore Troy’s Memories?

The yellow duck PEZ dispenser has quietly become one of the most important objects in Silo. Daniel Keene originally gives it to Helen Drew centuries before Juliette’s time, and the same object eventually reaches George Wilkins and Juliette as an illegal relic inside Silo 18. Season 3 gives it an even bigger purpose when holding the PEZ helps Juliette recover memories that had been suppressed. That does not confirm the dispenser will restore Troy’s memories in Season 4, but the possibility is now difficult to ignore. Troy is Daniel with most of his past chemically buried, and Helen is already beginning to break through. An object Daniel personally gave her could become an even stronger trigger.

Where did the PEZ dispenser originally come from?

The PEZ dispenser begins as an ordinary gift from Daniel to Helen in the Before Times. At the end of Season 2, Daniel awkwardly gives Helen the duck-shaped dispenser after their meeting, having bought it quickly on the way. Showrunner Graham Yost later confirmed that it is the exact same PEZ dispenser viewers had already seen hundreds of years later in Silo 18.

That reveal completely changes the object’s meaning. When George possesses it centuries later, residents regard it as a forbidden relic from a world they barely understand. For Daniel and Helen, however, it was once simply a personal object connecting two people before the silos became humanity’s entire reality.

Season 3 makes the connection even stronger by sending Helen to Silo 18 shortly before the old world ends. The show still has not revealed the complete chain explaining how the PEZ survives for roughly three centuries before reaching George, but Helen’s placement inside Silo 18 gives the object a believable starting point.

How did the PEZ dispenser reach Juliette?

George eventually finds the dispenser and gives it to Juliette, making it one of the relics connected to their relationship. Its importance initially comes from what relics represent in Silo 18: evidence that another civilization existed before the official history residents have been taught.

The dispenser later passes through other hands before Robert Sims returns it to Juliette during Season 3. By then, Juliette has lost crucial memories following the manipulation used against her. Her allies attempt to trigger those memories with familiar objects, including George’s watch, but the results are incomplete.

The PEZ finally causes the breakthrough. When Robert gives it back to Juliette, her memories of George, Silo 17 and the Safeguard return strongly enough for her to remember the information that eventually helps save Silo 18.

That makes the PEZ something much more useful than a clue about the Before Times. It becomes direct evidence that emotionally meaningful objects can help break through the show’s memory suppression.

Why are relics so dangerous to the people controlling the silos?

Relics threaten the Silo Project because physical objects preserve connections that official history is designed to erase. Residents are discouraged or forbidden from knowing too much about the Before Times, while Silo 1 uses memory manipulation much more aggressively on people such as Troy and Susan.

Season 3 suggests another reason objects can become dangerous. Memories are not stored like simple files that can be permanently deleted. Familiar faces, names and possessions can still create emotional reactions even after the conscious story attached to them has disappeared.

Juliette demonstrates this directly. The PEZ does not explain anything to her or provide new information. Its importance comes from what Juliette already associates with it, allowing buried memories to return once she encounters the right trigger.

That makes the Project’s obsession with controlling the past considerably easier to understand. A harmless piece of plastic can preserve something that drugs, propaganda and centuries of secrecy were supposed to destroy.

Why doesn’t Troy remember giving the PEZ to Helen?

Troy no longer consciously remembers much of Daniel Keene’s life because Silo 1 repeatedly subjects him to cryogenic sleep and memory suppression. By the Season 3 finale, Daniel has spent centuries functioning as Troy, a specialist awakened whenever the Project needs someone to manage a crisis.

Yet his old memories are not completely gone. Troy repeatedly experiences flashes of a woman he cannot identify and becomes determined enough to ask Victor to investigate her. Victor eventually leaves him the answer before his death: the woman is Helen Drew.

Troy’s reaction to hearing Helen’s name is crucial. Victor does not restore Daniel by explaining his entire history. He gives Troy one emotionally significant cue, and the name immediately reaches something that Silo 1 failed to eliminate.

The PEZ could theoretically work in the same way. Unlike Helen’s name, however, it is an object Daniel personally selected, bought and handed to her. That gives it a direct sensory and emotional connection to one of Daniel’s last ordinary moments with Helen before their lives were destroyed.

Could the PEZ dispenser restore Troy’s memories in Season 4?

It could help, but Silo has not confirmed that this will happen. The theory rests on a pattern Season 3 has already established rather than any official Season 4 plot revelation. Juliette regains important memories after encountering the PEZ, while Troy begins reconnecting with Daniel after hearing Helen’s name.

That creates an obvious possibility if Juliette and Troy meet in the final season. Juliette has possessed the same object Daniel gave Helen centuries earlier, and Troy is now struggling with incomplete memories of the woman connected to it. If Juliette still has access to the dispenser and Troy sees it, the object could provide another bridge between his two identities.

There is also a satisfying circular quality to that possibility. Daniel gives Helen a cheap convenience-store gift before the silos exist. It survives the destruction of the old world, becomes contraband, reaches George, helps Juliette recover her memories and could eventually return to the man who bought it after he has forgotten why he bought it in the first place.

That last step remains theory, not confirmed Season 4 information. But Silo has already proven that the PEZ is capable of carrying memory across generations, and Troy’s problem is now fundamentally a battle between the identity Silo 1 created and the memories of Daniel Keene that refuse to disappear. If any relic can help those memories return, the little yellow duck is the most obvious candidate.
