Marble Hall Murders begins with a major change in Susan Ryeland’s life. After everything that happened in Moonflower Murders, Susan is no longer living with Andreas in Crete. She has returned to England, moved into a London flat and is considering going back into publishing.

Episode 1 does not turn their separation into a dramatic betrayal. Susan makes it clear that Andreas did nothing terrible to her. Their relationship ended because the life they had created in Crete was no longer the life Susan wanted.

Why Did Susan Leave Andreas?

Susan tells Katie that leaving was her decision, saying the situation was her fault rather than Andreas’s.

She genuinely tried to settle in Crete. Susan admits that she still thinks it is a lovely place, but she eventually realized that enjoying Crete and wanting to live there permanently were two different things.

That distinction matters. Susan had already made major changes to her life for Andreas and the hotel, but once the excitement of starting over faded, she could no longer ignore the feeling that she did not belong there.

Susan Missed Publishing

The biggest reason Susan gives for returning to England is that she misses publishing. Editing books has always been an important part of her identity. Even though her work repeatedly dragged her into murder investigations through Alan Conway and Atticus Pund, Susan understands writers and manuscripts in a way she never quite connected with running a hotel.

Episode 1 makes that clear almost immediately. Susan tells Katie that she may have been offered a senior editor position at Causton Books after being approached through a headhunter.

The opportunity gives her something she was missing in Crete: a professional life that belongs entirely to her.

Andreas Was Busy With the Hotel

There was also a growing distance between Susan and Andreas. When Katie asks about him, Susan explains that Andreas was so busy with the hotel that they barely saw each other. The hotel had become the center of his life, while Susan was becoming increasingly uncertain about her own place in that life.

There is no suggestion in Episode 1 that Andreas cheated on Susan or that there was one explosive argument that destroyed their relationship. Instead, the show presents two people gradually moving in different directions. Andreas had the hotel and a life in Crete that suited him. Susan wanted England, books and publishing again.

Did Andreas Want Susan to Leave?

Episode 1 does not suggest that Andreas forced Susan out. Susan says he understood her decision, which makes the breakup more bittersweet than angry. She does not speak badly about him when discussing the separation with Katie, and she specifically takes responsibility for realizing that Crete was not right for her.

That also means viewers probably should not interpret the breakup as proof that their entire relationship had been a mistake. They simply reached a point where staying together required Susan to continue living a life she no longer wanted.

Why Is Susan Back in London?

Susan’s return to London immediately places her back in the world she knows best. She has a new flat and a mortgage, and Katie even arrives with an unexpected housewarming companion, a rescue cat named Hugo. Susan initially objects to the cat because she sees it as an uncomfortable symbol of being alone, but Hugo quickly becomes part of her new surroundings.

More importantly, Susan’s possible publishing job introduces her to Matthew Flynn at Causton Books. Matthew does not just want an ordinary editor. He needs Susan to handle a particularly complicated writer and manuscript. That writer is Eliot Crace.

Is Susan Working in Publishing Again?

Yes. Episode 1 sets up Susan’s return to editing through Eliot’s new manuscript, Pund’s Last Case. Eliot has been hired to write a continuation of Alan Conway’s Atticus Pund novels. Susan knows Eliot from her old publishing days, when Charles Clover commissioned his unsuccessful Doctor Gee mysteries.

She is initially reluctant to commit, but she agrees to read the first 10,000 words of his new novel.

That decision effectively reconnects Susan with Atticus Pund as well. The fictional detective begins appearing to her again, warning Susan about what he calls the inevitability of crime and the dangerous chemistry that can exist between two people.

Susan may have returned to England because she missed publishing, but Marble Hall Murders quickly makes clear that books and murder are about to become tangled together again.

Will Susan and Andreas Get Back Together?

Episode 1 does not answer that question. For now, Susan appears to have made a genuine break with her old life. She has returned to England, taken on financial responsibilities of her own and begun moving back toward the career she left behind.

At the same time, the episode does not portray Andreas as an enemy. The separation is presented with enough affection that the door is not emotionally slammed shut.

What Episode 1 establishes is much simpler: Susan chose herself and the life she actually wanted. Crete was beautiful, and Andreas remained important to her, but neither was enough to replace the part of Susan that wanted to be an editor again.
