Angela’s note at the end of “Average Joe” Season 1 lands just after Joe has survived Nicolai and brought Jennifer home, which makes her departure feel especially brutal. Instead of finding his family waiting, Joe discovers that Angela has taken Jennifer and left. The clearest explanation is that Angela no longer believes staying with Joe is safe for their daughter, even though Teddy Washington created the original crisis. Joe’s attempts to survive Teddy’s criminal mess have pulled the family deeper into violence, and Jennifer has already been kidnapped and threatened with death. Angela’s choice is therefore better understood as a boundary after the danger reaches Jennifer directly, rather than proof that she simply stopped caring about Joe.
Spoiler Alert
Jennifer’s Kidnapping Changes Everything for Angela
Jennifer becomes the most vulnerable person in Joe’s fight with the Russian mob, and that is what makes Angela’s decision easiest to understand. In the Season 1 finale, Nicolai threatens to murder Jennifer in front of Joe, while Jennifer’s pregnancy also becomes leverage in the conflict around Nicolai’s family. Joe eventually kills Nicolai and brings his daughter home, so Angela is not leaving because Joe failed to rescue her. The problem is that kidnapping, murder and retaliation have now reached their daughter, turning Teddy’s hidden criminal life into a direct threat to the Washington family. Nicolai may be dead, but Angela has no reliable reason to believe every consequence of Teddy’s secrets disappeared with him.
Is Angela Really Blaming Joe for Teddy’s Crimes?
Angela does not appear to blame Joe for creating Teddy’s problems, but she has reasons to hold him responsible for choices made after those problems arrive. Joe never asked his father to steal millions from dangerous people, and much of Season 1 is about an ordinary man inheriting a catastrophe he could not have anticipated. Still, Joe gradually moves from victim to active participant as he searches for the money, covers up crimes and fights back against the people pursuing his family. Angela supports him through much of that chaos, but she is also one of the characters most resistant to accepting it as their new normal. By the finale, loving Joe and keeping Jennifer close to him have become inseparable from a level of danger Angela is no longer willing to accept.

Why Does Jennifer Leave With Angela?
Jennifer goes with Angela because she has suffered enough of the consequences herself for this to be more than a simple marital separation. Her relationship with Dimitri ties her directly to the Dzhugashvili family, and she is later kidnapped, threatened and forced to make terrifying decisions to stay alive. BET’s finale coverage confirms that Angela is relieved when Joe brings Jennifer home, before the episode later reveals that mother and daughter have left together. That order matters because Angela does not dismiss Joe’s rescue or take Jennifer away while the immediate crisis is still unfolding. She waits until her daughter is safe, then chooses distance as the one protective step she can still control.
Season 2 Shows Why Angela’s Decision Matters
Season 2 begins 67 days later with Joe separated from his family and emotionally at rock bottom, but Angela and Jennifer have not escaped Teddy’s shadow either. Paramount+’s official description of “67 Days Later” says a disturbing call tells Joe that his family’s life is in danger and that the answers point toward Africa. The premiere reveals that Angela and Jennifer have been photographed without their knowledge, with those surveillance images becoming part of the trail that sends Joe and his friends to Cape Town. That makes Angela’s decision tragic rather than pointless: leaving Joe may reduce Jennifer’s immediate exposure to his chaos, but it cannot sever the larger network connected to Teddy. Angela leaves because she wants safety for Jennifer, and Season 2 quickly proves that saving the Washington family will require more than simply putting physical distance between them and Joe.
