Goodman’s Father in CIA

CBS’s “CIA” spent its first season building its central partnership around a simple contrast. Bill Goodman is the disciplined FBI agent who believes in rules and accountability, while Colin Glass is already comfortable operating in the less predictable world of intelligence. Season 2 immediately complicates that arrangement by giving Bill a personal reason to question everything he thought he understood about that world.

The premiere, “The Deep,” brings Bill back to work shortly after the loss of his father, Robert Goodman. What initially looks like a storyline about Bill trying to bury himself in work becomes something much larger when an old item among Robert’s belongings points toward a secret life Bill never knew existed. CBS had already teased that Bill would make a major discovery following his father’s passing, but the episode reveals just how closely that mystery is tied to the CIA itself.

Who was Robert Goodman?

Robert Goodman was Bill Goodman’s father and one of the people Bill admired most. The series had established the importance of Bill’s family before Season 2, including a Season 1 storyline in which Bill worried about his father’s declining health while continuing to work in New York. That made Robert more than a convenient new mystery when Season 2 began. He was already part of the emotional background that helped explain Bill’s sense of duty and responsibility.

Until the Season 2 premiere, Bill understood his father primarily through the life Robert had presented to his family. Showrunner Mike Weiss has described Robert as Bill’s hero, which helps explain why the discovery in “The Deep” lands so heavily. Bill is not simply learning an unexpected fact about a parent. He is being forced to reconsider the person whose example helped shape his own ideas about service and integrity.

Robert Goodman secretly worked for the CIA

The first clue appears when Bill goes through his father’s belongings and discovers an old airline ticket connected to Tbilisi, Georgia, in 1998. Bill asks his mother about the trip, but she does not know why Robert would have been there. For an FBI agent accustomed to noticing inconsistencies, that small unexplained detail is enough to keep bothering him.

Bill eventually tells Colin about what he found. Colin initially plays down the significance of the ticket, but privately takes the question seriously enough to approach Nikki Reynard and investigate old CIA records. The trail leads to an operation called “Operation Panama,” which Nikki describes as a particularly troubling chapter in the agency’s history.

By the end of the premiere, Colin has the answer Bill was not expecting: Robert Goodman worked for the CIA as an intelligence officer. Bill had apparently spent his entire life without knowing about that part of his father’s career, and even his mother seems to have been kept outside the secret.

Why was Robert in Georgia in 1998?

The premiere does not yet explain exactly what Robert was doing in Tbilisi. The boarding pass is designed as the opening clue rather than the full solution, connecting an apparently ordinary piece of family history to a classified CIA operation.

What is already clear is that the trip was not an isolated curiosity. Weiss has confirmed that Robert’s overseas intelligence work will become central to Bill’s Season 2 story, and that some of what Bill eventually uncovers will be difficult for him to reconcile with the father he remembered. The mystery is expected to unfold through the first 10 episodes rather than being solved immediately.

That distinction matters because “CIA” is not simply setting up a search for Robert’s old job title. Bill is trying to discover what his father actually did while working for the agency and why those experiences remained hidden from his family for decades.

How is Felix connected to Robert Goodman?

The biggest indication that Robert’s past is still relevant comes through Felix, the elusive international operative introduced during the premiere’s main investigation. At first, Felix appears connected only to the episode’s present-day case. By the closing scenes, however, the show deliberately leaves him available to return.

Weiss has since confirmed that Felix and Robert Goodman had a professional relationship during Robert’s time as a CIA intelligence officer. More importantly, Felix apparently possesses information about Robert that Bill will not be able to obtain simply by reading classified files.

That effectively transforms Felix from a premiere adversary into a living connection to Bill’s family history. Finding him becomes important not only because of the CIA’s interest in him, but because he may be the only person capable of telling Bill what his father was actually like in the field.

Robert’s secret changes Bill’s Season 2 story

Nick Gehlfuss indicated before the premiere that the revelation would send Bill into a roughly 10-episode personal arc, taking the story toward the midseason point. He also suggested that Bill would begin questioning himself as much as his father, particularly after discovering that the man he admired had an entire professional identity hidden from him.

That is where Robert Goodman’s story could become especially important to the series. Bill joined the CIA task force as the character most uncomfortable with intelligence work that did not fit neatly inside familiar FBI rules. Now he has discovered that his own father lived in that world long before him.

Instead of merely giving Bill a family mystery, “CIA” has created a direct challenge to his understanding of himself. Robert Goodman may no longer be present in Season 2, but the truth about his CIA career is positioned to influence Bill, Colin and their partnership for much of the season.
