FBI gave viewers a convincing reason to wonder about OA Zidan’s future when Season 8 ended with the veteran agent handing over his badge and walking away from 26 Fed. Season 9 initially keeps that uncertainty alive by placing OA outside the familiar FBI team, while Maggie moves forward with new partner Isaiah Green.
There is, however, no actual Zeeko Zaki exit happening. OA remains an important part of Season 9, and his absence from Maggie’s regular cases is part of a multi-episode undercover storyline rather than a departure from the CBS series.
Is Zeeko Zaki leaving FBI?
No, Zeeko Zaki is not leaving FBI based on everything currently confirmed about Season 9. Showrunner Mike Weiss directly addressed the concern after the Season 8 finale and said Zaki would remain a series regular, with OA’s new assignment changing where viewers see him rather than reducing his presence on the show.
Paramount’s official Season 9 material has also listed Zaki among the returning central cast and explicitly addressed the question of whether he is leaving. The answer is no, with OA’s altered position described as a consequence of the Season 8 ending rather than a cast departure.

That distinction matters because FBI deliberately staged OA’s exit from 26 Fed to look convincing. The character may be separated from his old workplace, but the actor remains deeply involved in the season’s central serialized storyline.
Why did OA leave the FBI team?
OA’s apparent exit began with his worsening relationship with ADIC Lawrence Green. Their disagreement reached a breaking point in the Season 8 finale after OA objected to how a highly classified operation involving Anna Vorpe’s strike team was being handled.
Green dismissed OA, and the confrontation was genuine from Green’s perspective. Weiss later confirmed that Green was not secretly participating in the undercover operation when he made that decision.
What happened afterward changed everything. Anna approached OA when he appeared professionally isolated and offered him a place on her own team, exactly the opening OA, Maggie and Isobel needed.
OA then revealed that he was going undercover. His apparent fall from the FBI had unexpectedly become the perfect background story for infiltrating Anna’s organization.

OA is still undercover after the Season 9 premiere
“Rendition” confirms that OA has already spent months embedded with Anna’s people by the time Season 9 begins. He is clearly tired of the assignment and wants to return to the team, particularly after unexpectedly crossing paths with Maggie again.
OA initially believes the events of the premiere will provide enough evidence to end the operation. Isobel instead explains that Anna has protection inside a larger government structure and that OA still has to identify the person shielding her.
The result is frustrating for OA but useful for the season’s story. Rather than resolving the undercover arc in the premiere, FBI sends him back in with a much more specific objective.
When will OA return to Maggie’s team?
CBS has not announced an exact episode for OA’s permanent return to Maggie’s side. That is important because descriptions suggesting that he is definitely returning in Episode 2 or Episode 3 would currently go beyond what the network and producers have confirmed.
We do know that Episode 2, “Omissions,” still has Maggie partnered with Isaiah Green. The official synopsis says Maggie begins bonding with Isaiah and is also secretly pulled into helping OA, so OA’s undercover operation is clearly continuing beyond the premiere.
There are also strong signs that the first few episodes will move the story toward a turning point. Zaki has said that the undercover material involving Anna’s team continues across the opening episodes, while Weiss has indicated that OA makes an important move in Episode 3 to obtain the information 26 Fed needs.
That does not automatically mean Episode 3 is the exact moment OA resumes his old position. It does mean viewers should expect meaningful progress relatively early in the season rather than an indefinite separation.
Maggie and OA will be partners again
The most important confirmation is that the separation is temporary. Weiss has openly discussed OA’s eventual return to the team and the effect the assignment will have on his partnership with Maggie afterward.
The writers are therefore not using Isaiah Green to permanently replace OA. Isaiah gives Maggie someone competent to work with while the undercover operation continues, but the larger Season 9 story remains invested in bringing Maggie and OA back together.
The real question is what version of OA comes back. Weiss has suggested that the experience will leave an emotional mark on him, and that his colleagues will have to help him readjust after spending so much time separated from his normal support system.
OA’s undercover experience will follow him home
OA has always been one of FBI’s clearest moral centers, which is partly why this assignment creates such useful tension. To remain believable around Anna, he has to spend every day pretending to accept behavior he would normally challenge immediately.
Zaki has described OA as increasingly eager to return to the FBI and the life he recognizes. At the same time, the actor has suggested that the longer OA remains embedded, the greater the risk that the assignment affects how he thinks and responds.
Season 9 appears ready to carry those consequences beyond the operation itself. Weiss has said that when OA eventually returns, the team will have to help him reconnect with the agent he was before he disappeared into Anna’s world.
What happens to OA and Maggie after he returns?
Their reunion is likely to be less straightforward than viewers might expect. Maggie and OA clearly miss working together, but the producers have already signaled that simply putting them back in the same vehicle will not erase what happened during their months apart.
Weiss has spoken about creating a deeper version of their relationship once OA returns. That suggests Season 9 is using the temporary separation not to weaken the pairing but to move it beyond the comfortable rhythm the characters had established over previous seasons.
Zaki has also teased moments when Maggie and OA will disagree. That could become particularly significant after the undercover arc, when OA returns with experiences Maggie understands only from the outside.
For viewers worried that the Season 8 finale was preparing Zeeko Zaki’s exit, the answer is reassuringly clear: OA is not leaving FBI. The uncertainty now concerns when he can safely come home and how different his partnership with Maggie will feel when he finally does.
