Isaiah Green in FBI Season 9

FBI has spent eight seasons making Maggie Bell and OA Zidan one of its most dependable partnerships, so Season 9 immediately feels different when Maggie walks into the field with somebody else beside her. The newcomer is Special Agent Isaiah Green, played by Roland Buck III, and his arrival is more complicated than a routine personnel change because his family connection reaches directly into the leadership of the New York field office.

Isaiah debuts in the Season 9 premiere, “Rendition,” while OA remains separated from his usual team because of the undercover assignment created at the end of Season 8. Maggie may technically have a new partner, but Isaiah quickly realizes that there are things about OA’s disappearance that she is not telling him.

Who is Isaiah Green in FBI Season 9?

Isaiah Green is an FBI special agent assigned to work with Maggie while OA is unavailable. He is also the nephew of ADIC Lawrence Green, played by Curtiss Cook, the senior official whose increasingly difficult relationship with OA became an important part of the closing episodes of Season 8.

That connection gives Isaiah an awkward position from the moment he arrives. Other agents know that his uncle has considerable authority inside the Bureau, but Season 9 showrunner Mike Weiss has made it clear that Isaiah is not supposed to be viewed as someone who received his position simply because of his family name.

Instead, Isaiah is presented as a capable agent who wants to be judged on his own work. That becomes important because Maggie initially has more reason to be cautious around him than he realizes.

Why is Isaiah Maggie’s new partner?

Isaiah is partnered with Maggie because OA is no longer working openly at 26 Fed when Season 9 begins. OA is deep undercover with Anna Vorpe and her off-book strike team, leaving Maggie in need of another agent beside her during regular investigations.

The problem is that Isaiah does not initially know the full story. OA’s very public break with the FBI was useful precisely because Anna needed to believe that he had genuinely become disillusioned with the Bureau, so information about his real assignment has been tightly controlled.

Maggie therefore has to do something she rarely had to do with OA: work closely with a partner while withholding a major operational secret from him. For Isaiah, the situation is equally uncomfortable because he can tell that Maggie is not giving him the entire picture.

Why doesn’t Maggie trust Isaiah yet?

Maggie’s hesitation is not really about Isaiah’s ability as an agent. It is about who he is connected to.

Lawrence Green was not originally told that OA’s departure would be used as cover for an undercover operation. Green genuinely clashed with OA and genuinely removed him from the team, after which Maggie and Isobel were able to use that situation to help OA get close to Anna.

That means telling Isaiah the truth could potentially allow the information to reach his uncle, intentionally or otherwise. For an undercover operation that depends on Anna believing OA has turned his back on the FBI, even a small leak could ruin months of work.

Isaiah, however, is observant enough to recognize that Maggie’s version of events does not completely add up. That suspicion is likely to become one of the more interesting parts of their temporary partnership because the question is not simply whether Maggie can work with Isaiah, but whether she can eventually trust him with the same secret she has been protecting.

Isaiah proves he belongs in the premiere

“Rendition” does not portray Isaiah as an incompetent replacement designed to make viewers miss OA. The episode instead gives him opportunities to demonstrate why he belongs in the field, even while Maggie remains emotionally and professionally accustomed to working with somebody else.

The important shift comes when Isaiah starts recognizing that Maggie is operating with information he does not have. Rather than immediately turning that tension into open conflict, the premiere establishes him as someone willing to give his partner room while also expecting honesty in return.

That creates a more interesting dynamic than simple rivalry. Isaiah is not trying to take OA’s place in Maggie’s life, but he does expect the basic trust that any functioning FBI partnership requires.

Is Isaiah replacing OA permanently?

There is currently no indication that Isaiah is intended to permanently replace OA as Maggie’s partner. Weiss has already confirmed that Maggie and OA will be reunited, although the series intends to make that journey difficult rather than restoring the old partnership immediately.

The official description for Season 9 Episode 2, “Omissions,” also shows that Isaiah remains relevant after the premiere. Maggie begins bonding with her new partner while simultaneously being drawn back into OA’s secret operation, which puts her in the increasingly difficult position of building trust with Isaiah while continuing to conceal part of her life from him.

That may ultimately be Isaiah’s most important function in Season 9. He gives Maggie a good partner at exactly the moment when she is emotionally still tied to the partner she cannot openly work with.

Who plays Isaiah Green?

Isaiah is played by Roland Buck III, an actor television viewers may recognize from Chicago Med. Buck played Dr. Noah Sexton on the NBC medical drama, making his move into the Dick Wolf-produced FBI universe something of a return to familiar territory.

His other credits include American Sports Story, The Long Road Home, The Week Of, Sleight and Better Call Saul. Buck’s own official site now lists his FBI role as Special Agent Isaiah Green and identifies the character as Maggie Bell’s new partner.

The casting works particularly well because Isaiah needs to feel experienced enough that viewers believe Maggie can depend on him without making the character seem like a direct copy of OA. Buck gives the role a different energy, which allows the show to explore Maggie from another angle rather than attempting to recreate a partnership that has taken nearly a decade to develop.

Isaiah could become an ally to OA

The more interesting question may not be whether Isaiah stays beside Maggie, but what happens when he finally understands what OA has really been doing. Season 9 is already positioning him close enough to the secret that keeping him completely outside the operation may become increasingly difficult.

Weiss has described Isaiah as loyal and above-board, which suggests the eventual conflict will be about trust rather than betrayal. If Maggie decides she can bring him into the circle, Isaiah could shift from being the man temporarily occupying OA’s old position to someone capable of helping Maggie and OA finish the operation that separated them in the first place.

For now, Isaiah is not OA’s permanent replacement. He is something potentially more useful to FBI’s Season 9 story: a capable new agent whose presence forces Maggie to examine what partnership and trust mean when the person she trusts most is no longer standing beside her.
