The second season of CBS’s “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” ended with an unexpected development in Mary Cooper’s personal life, and the consequences continue into Season 3. After gradually becoming more open to dating following the loss of her husband, George Sr., Mary develops an interest in Fred Fagenbacher, a businessman who has spent considerable time making her son Georgie’s life difficult. Fred, played by Matt Letscher, is hardly a stranger to the Cooper and McAllister families, having previously competed with Jim McAllister and later Georgie in the tire business. His growing closeness to Mary turns an already unpleasant professional rivalry into a deeply personal disagreement, leaving Georgie convinced that his mother is making a serious mistake.
Who Is Fred Fagenbacher, and Who Plays Him?
Fred Fagenbacher is a local businessman who owns a competing automotive and tire business in Medford, Texas. He is portrayed by Matt Letscher, an American actor known for playing Eobard Thawne in “The Flash” and “Legends of Tomorrow,” as well as his appearances in “Narcos: Mexico” and “The Mask of Zorro.” Fred first appeared in the first season of “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” as a professional rival, but his importance increased as Georgie became more involved in running his own tire shop. What initially seemed like an ordinary competition between local businesses gradually developed into a personal feud.
Fred’s history with the McAllisters also makes his involvement with Mary more complicated. Before Jim and Audrey married, Fred dated Audrey during their high school years, giving him a personal connection to the family that extends well beyond the tire business. Jim has never been particularly fond of him, and Georgie eventually inherits much of that hostility after becoming Fred’s direct competitor. Although Fred can be charming when he wants to be, his willingness to provoke Georgie has made it difficult for anyone close to the young businessman to trust him.
Why Does Georgie Hate Fred Fagenbacher?
Georgie’s dislike of Fred comes primarily from their long-running business rivalry. After taking on greater responsibility for the tire shop, Georgie discovers that Fred is willing to use aggressive tactics to protect his position in the local market. The two repeatedly clash over customers, business decisions and their competing ambitions, with Fred often appearing to enjoy getting under Georgie’s skin. For Georgie, the shop represents much more than a way to earn money, since he is trying to build a stable future for Mandy and their daughter, CeeCee.
One of their most personal disagreements occurs in Season 2 when Georgie attempts to honor his late father through a project involving the local school’s scoreboard. Fred offers financial assistance, but his involvement comes with conditions that Georgie finds unacceptable. The disagreement turns what should have been a meaningful tribute to George Sr. into another contest between the businessmen. Georgie eventually finds another way to honor his father, but the experience reinforces his belief that Fred is more interested in winning than doing something generous.
The conflict becomes even more troubling because Mary has financially supported Georgie’s business ambitions. She previously put her house up as collateral to help him establish the tire shop, meaning that the family’s security is connected to its success. Georgie therefore sees Fred’s business tactics as something that could affect his mother as well as himself. When Fred later begins pursuing Mary romantically, Georgie has little reason to believe that the businessman has suddenly developed good intentions.
How Does Fred Become Mary’s Boyfriend?
Fred’s relationship with Mary develops toward the end of Season 2, when he begins attending her Bible study sessions and expressing an interest in becoming a better person. Mary, played by Zoe Perry, initially approaches him through her faith, believing that even someone with a questionable reputation deserves an opportunity to change. Fred appears receptive to her guidance, creating an unexpected connection between two people who would otherwise have little reason to spend time together. Georgie, however, is immediately suspicious and assumes that Fred’s interest in religion is another attempt to manipulate the family.

Determined to expose Fred’s supposed dishonesty, Georgie recruits his grandmother, Meemaw, to investigate him. The plan does not work as expected because Meemaw ends up enjoying Fred’s company during their encounter at a bar. Rather than uncovering evidence that Fred is deceiving Mary, she discovers that he can be entertaining and personable when he is not deliberately antagonizing Georgie. Her reaction only makes Georgie more frustrated, particularly because he expected his grandmother to support him without question.
Mary eventually makes it clear that she is interested in exploring a romantic relationship with Fred. Georgie responds by warning her that continuing to see him could mean losing access to Georgie, Mandy and CeeCee. Instead of accepting the ultimatum, Mary asks Fred out on a proper date, demonstrating that she is unwilling to let her son dictate her personal life. Georgie storms out, and the second season ends with their relationship more strained than it has been in years.
Is Fred Really Trying to Change, or Is He Using Mary?
Fred’s intentions remain one of the most interesting unanswered questions surrounding the relationship. He tells Mary that he wants to become a better man, and his willingness to participate in her religious activities suggests that he may be making a genuine effort. At the same time, his established history with Georgie makes it difficult to dismiss the possibility that he enjoys the discomfort his new relationship is causing. His reaction after Mary asks him out in the Season 2 finale is deliberately open to interpretation, leaving viewers uncertain whether he is pleased about the romance itself or the effect it has had on Georgie.
Series co-creator Steve Holland has acknowledged that the uncertainty is intentional. Fred may genuinely want to change, but wanting to improve does not necessarily mean that his old habits will disappear. His previous behavior has made Georgie understandably cautious, even if that caution sometimes becomes excessive. Mary, on the other hand, believes that people deserve the opportunity to demonstrate that they can be different from who they were in the past.
There is also a more personal reason why Georgie struggles with the relationship. His father’s passing remains an important part of his life, and seeing Mary with another man is an emotional adjustment regardless of whom she chooses to date. Fred’s identity makes the situation considerably worse because Georgie already associates him with humiliation, professional setbacks and threats to his family’s financial stability. What Mary sees as an opportunity for companionship and a fresh beginning, Georgie interprets as a betrayal of everything he has worked to protect.
Does Georgie Accept Fred and Mary’s Relationship in Season 3?
The Season 3 premiere shows that Georgie has not changed his opinion of Fred. He continues refusing to approve of Mary’s relationship and initially prevents her from spending time with CeeCee. Mandy disagrees with the punishment, arguing that their daughter should not lose her grandmother simply because Georgie is angry about Mary’s romantic choices. Jim and Audrey also recognize that the situation has gone too far, even though they have their own reasons for disliking Fred.
While Georgie is away in Lubbock helping Connor deal with his arrest, Mandy secretly takes CeeCee to visit Mary. Georgie eventually discovers that several members of the family have been allowing these visits without his knowledge. He feels betrayed, but the disagreement forces him to confront the consequences of his decision. His attempt to punish Mary has also been hurting CeeCee, who misses spending time with her grandmother.
By the end of the premiere, Georgie personally brings CeeCee to Mary’s house, allowing them to resume their relationship. However, he makes it clear that his decision should not be mistaken for approval of Fred. Georgie is willing to stop using his daughter as leverage, but he has not forgiven his mother for choosing someone he considers an enemy. Mary accepts the compromise, although neither of them has resolved the disagreement at the center of their estrangement.
Fred’s relationship with Mary therefore remains an important source of tension in “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.” The premiere does not establish that Fred is deliberately exploiting Mary, nor does it prove that his attempt to change is entirely sincere. For now, the greater conflict is between a mother who wants to make her own decisions and a son who believes he is protecting her from someone untrustworthy. Whether Fred ultimately justifies Georgie’s suspicions or proves that Mary was right to give him a chance remains to be seen.
