Ava in The Gilded Age Season 4

The Gilded Age Season 4 is bringing several new faces into its already sprawling New York society, but Adrienne Warren’s arrival is particularly interesting because her character is tied directly to Peggy Scott. Warren will play Ava, a previously unseen member of Peggy’s family who enters the story as Peggy’s relationship with Dr. William Kirkland becomes increasingly important.

Warren’s casting had already been announced, but details about her character were initially kept under wraps. TV Insider has now revealed that Warren plays Ava, Peggy’s cousin and a singer whose story is connected to the Kirkland family.

Who Is Ava in The Gilded Age?

Ava is Peggy Scott’s cousin. Although HBO has not yet revealed the full circumstances behind her introduction, she is described as a singer who celebrates family and cultural traditions alongside the Kirklands.

That connection immediately places Ava close to Peggy’s developing relationship with William Kirkland. William has become an increasingly significant part of Peggy’s life, and Season 4 will follow Peggy as she attempts to find acceptance within his family while continuing to pursue her ambitions as a writer.

Ava could provide another link between the two families. Because she already shares traditions with the Kirklands, her presence may also help the series explore parts of Peggy’s community that have previously remained outside the main story.

Why Ava Matters to Peggy’s Season 4 Story

Peggy’s storyline has gradually expanded beyond her work as a journalist and writer. Her romance with William introduced the Kirklands, a prominent Black family whose expectations have created a different kind of challenge for her.

Season 4 appears ready to push that relationship further. Jordan Donica, who plays William, has been promoted to series regular, suggesting that both William and his family will have a much larger presence in the new episodes.

Introducing Peggy’s cousin at the same time makes sense. Ava gives Peggy another family connection within this part of the story and could offer a different perspective on the Kirklands, particularly as Peggy tries to balance her independence with the expectations surrounding her future.

The Gilded Age has spent much of its run examining how family, wealth and social standing shape people’s choices. Ava’s arrival allows the series to continue doing that within Peggy’s world rather than keeping those themes largely centered on the Russells and van Rhijns.

Adrienne Warren comes to The Gilded Age with an extensive theater background. She is best known for portraying Tina Turner in Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, a performance that earned her the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

Her casting also continues the show’s close relationship with Broadway. The Gilded Age has consistently filled its ensemble with celebrated stage performers, and Warren becomes another major theater name joining the HBO drama.

There is also an obvious connection between Warren’s own musical career and Ava being described as a singer. Whether Season 4 will actually feature Warren performing has not been confirmed, but making music part of Ava’s identity suggests that her character’s artistic life may be important rather than incidental.

What Does Ava Look Like in Season 4?

The first image of Warren as Ava shows the character dressed in the elaborate period fashion associated with The Gilded Age. Costume designer Kasia Walicka-Maimone has once again used clothing to establish a character’s position within the show’s carefully constructed social world.

Ava appears to be attending a formal public gathering, possibly connected to church or another community event. The context of the scene has not been disclosed, however, so it remains unclear whether Peggy, William or the Kirklands are involved.

Even without knowing exactly what is happening in the scene, the image places Ava comfortably within the affluent Black community that Season 4 intends to explore more deeply.

Peggy’s World Is Expanding in Season 4

Ava’s introduction comes during a significant period for Peggy. Her literary ambitions are expected to receive greater attention, while her relationship with William is moving into territory where family approval and long-term expectations become increasingly difficult to avoid.

Season 4 will also introduce several other new characters across the show’s different social circles. Jim Gaffigan joins as President Grover Cleveland, Neal Huff plays John D. Rockefeller, and Dennis Haysbert appears as Dr. Reginald Harris. James Scully, Bonnie Milligan, Taylor Trensch and Maggie Kuntz are among the other newcomers.

But Warren’s Ava stands apart because she is not being introduced from outside Peggy’s existing world. She belongs to Peggy’s family, and her connection to the Kirklands makes her immediately relevant to one of Season 4’s central relationships.

How large Ava’s role ultimately becomes remains to be seen, but her arrival is another indication that The Gilded Age is giving Peggy’s family and community a broader place in the series.
