One of the most personal stories in Netflix’s Turning Point: Generation 9/11 comes not from September 11 itself, but from the war that followed it. Obaidullah Durani was an Afghan fighter pilot who worked alongside the United States and later tried to escape Afghanistan with his family during the chaotic withdrawal from Kabul in 2021. Durani successfully reached the United States with his two young children, but his wife, Shafaro, was separated from them at Kabul airport and remained in Afghanistan. As of the latest reliable public reporting, there is no confirmation that the couple has been reunited.
Who Is Obaidullah Durani?
Obaidullah Durani served as an Afghan military pilot and received training connected to US forces during America’s long involvement in Afghanistan. That relationship put people like Durani in an especially vulnerable position when the Taliban rapidly returned to power in August 2021. As Kabul collapsed, thousands of Afghans who had worked with the United States desperately tried to reach evacuation flights. Durani was among them, but he was attempting to escape with a wife and two very young children rather than by himself.
His story fits the larger argument made by Turning Point: Generation 9/11. The documentary traces consequences of September 11 across 25 years, eventually arriving at America’s withdrawal from the same country it invaded following the attacks. Durani represents the Afghan families whose lives became tied to the American mission and were then thrown into uncertainty when that mission ended.

What Happened to Shafaro at Kabul Airport?
Durani reached Kabul airport with Shafaro, their young son and their infant daughter, Hela, during the frantic evacuation. Hela was lifted over a barrier by a US Marine as the family struggled to get inside, while Durani managed to move forward with the children. Shafaro, who was reportedly sick at the time, became separated from them in the enormous crowd. She never made it onto the evacuation flight with her husband and children.
Durani therefore faced a terrible decision that was effectively being made around him. He escaped Afghanistan with the children while Shafaro remained behind under Taliban rule. What was supposed to be the family’s rescue instead divided them between two countries.
Did Obaidullah Durani and Shafaro Reunite?
There is currently no reliable public evidence confirming that Durani and Shafaro have reunited. Reporting in late 2025 still described Shafaro as being outside the United States while Durani was trying to bring her over through the immigration process. Her case had already moved slowly, and changes affecting Afghan immigration cases created further uncertainty for the family.
That distinction matters because Turning Point may leave viewers hoping that the passage of several years eventually brought the family back together. The publicly documented story does not yet provide that ending. Unless Durani or another reliable source announces a reunion, it would be inaccurate to claim that Shafaro has joined him in America.
Where Is Obaidullah Durani Now?
Durani settled in Arizona with his son and daughter after arriving in the United States. He suddenly had to raise two very young children without their mother while also supporting the family financially, and reporting has described him taking delivery work after resettlement. His life in America has therefore been shaped by two opposing realities: he and his children escaped the Taliban, but the person they wanted beside them was left behind.
Turning Point: Generation 9/11 uses Durani’s experience to show how the consequences of 9/11 continued long after the attacks themselves. Twenty years of war ended at Kabul airport, but for families like Durani’s, the withdrawal did not bring a clean conclusion. His most important unresolved question remains deeply personal: whether Shafaro will finally be able to join her husband and children in the United States.
