Robert “Rob” Adelson occupies an unusual place in the Adelson family story explored in Welcome to the Family: The Murder of Dan Markel, now streaming on Hulu and Disney+ . He is Donna and Harvey Adelson’s eldest child and the older brother of Charlie and Wendi, yet by the time Donna went on trial for Dan Markel’s murder, Rob had been estranged from much of his family for years. He eventually did something no other Adelson child had done before: he took the stand against his own mother. Today, Rob has built a life far away from South Florida and continues working as a doctor in upstate New York.
Why did Robert Adelson become estranged from his family?
The problems between Rob and his parents began years before anyone was arrested in Dan Markel’s murder. Public reporting about the family says Donna and Harvey disapproved when Rob wanted to marry a woman who was not Jewish. That disagreement became an early example of the tension Rob later described in court, where he portrayed Donna as a mother with very fixed ideas about how her children should live.
Rob testified that things were generally fine when the children followed those expectations, but conflict followed when they did not. His description also helps explain why his testimony mattered so much during Donna’s 2025 trial. Instead of discussing Donna only as a murder defendant, he gave jurors a personal view of how strongly she involved herself in her adult children’s lives.
What changed after Dan Markel was murdered?
The murder deepened Rob’s distance from his family. He testified that Donna told him Dan had been shot, but some of the details she appeared to know made him curious. Rob also became troubled by what he saw as the family’s lack of interest in discovering who had killed Dan.
After arrests began in 2016, his suspicions increased. Rob recalled Donna telling him not to speak with law enforcement, and he said their final conversation ended abruptly after he brought up the arrests. He testified in 2025 that this was the last time he spoke with his mother.
That history is why it is slightly misleading to say Rob suddenly “turned against” Donna. His break from the family developed over years, and by the time he appeared as a prosecution witness, the relationship had already been severely damaged.

What did Robert say at Donna Adelson’s trial?
Rob testified for the prosecution in August 2025. He described Donna as controlling, said she hated Dan during the divorce conflict and discussed how intensely she involved herself in Wendi’s problems. He also recalled Donna’s reaction after Dan’s murder and her warning about speaking to police.
Rob was not accused of participating in Dan’s murder. His importance came from being an insider who could describe the Adelson family’s dynamics without being aligned with Donna, Charlie or Wendi.
His appearance was especially notable because he had been listed as a possible witness in earlier proceedings but had never previously testified before a jury.
Where is Robert Adelson now?
Rob appears to have built his life in New York rather than returning to the Adelson family’s South Florida circle. Current medical records from St. Peter’s Health Partners list Robert Todd Adelson, MD, as an otolaryngologist and plastic surgery specialist practicing with Albany ENT & Allergy Services in Albany, New York.
His professional biography says he trained in otolaryngology and later completed fellowships in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and rhinology. Publicly available information gives no indication that Rob has rejoined his family following Donna’s conviction.
That makes his role in Welcome to the Family particularly striking. The Adelson child who physically and emotionally moved furthest away eventually became the one willing to publicly describe the family from the witness stand.
