What Happened to Struan Loy in Slow Horses? His Season 6 Death Explained

Slow Horses Season 6 reaches back to the show’s earliest days almost immediately, bringing Struan Loy back into the story after an absence of several seasons. Paul Higgins’ character was part of Jackson Lamb’s original Slough House team, but unlike River, Roddy, Catherine and some of the other familiar faces, Struan disappeared from the series after the first season.

His return in the Season 6 premiere initially feels like a chance to see what life looks like for a former Slow Horse who has finally moved beyond MI5. Instead, Struan becomes the first sign that someone is digging through Slough House’s history and targeting the people connected to it.

What Happened to Struan Loy After Season 1?

Struan was already at Slough House when River Cartwright arrived in Season 1. He had been sent there after using an MI5 email chain to make an inappropriate joke about then-First Desk Ingrid Tearney and subsequently lying when investigators questioned him about it. Like most of Lamb’s agents, he remained technically employed by the Service but had little realistic chance of returning to the Park.

His position became more complicated during the Hassan Ahmed kidnapping crisis. When Diana Taverner needed to shift responsibility for her failed operation away from herself, Struan was taken to the Park and pressured into supporting a false version of events that implicated Lamb. Taverner used Struan’s desperation to rebuild his career as leverage, encouraging him to claim that Lamb had been involved with Alan Black’s operation.

Once Taverner’s plan collapsed, Struan effectively disappeared from the Slough House story. By the time Season 6 catches up with him, his life as an MI5 officer is firmly behind him.

What Is Struan Doing in Season 6?

Struan has created an unusual new life outside the Service. He teaches martial arts and is also trying to establish a business selling small studio homes built inside shipping containers.

His commitment to the idea is not merely professional. Struan is living inside one of the containers himself, and when two strangers arrive expressing interest in the business, he eagerly welcomes them in and begins explaining how the concept works.

The meeting quickly becomes uncomfortable. Struan starts to sense that the visitors are not genuine customers, but he realizes the danger too late. The pair overpower him before turning his own home into the means of killing him.

How Does Struan Loy Die?

Struan is murdered by the mysterious man and woman who visit his shipping-container home. After attacking him, they start a fire inside the container and lock him in, leaving him unable to escape as the structure burns.

The method is important because the killers are not simply trying to eliminate Struan. They also want his death to appear accidental. A fire inside an unconventional home gives investigators an easy explanation that does not immediately point toward assassination.

That approach nearly works. Struan’s death reaches Emma Flyte at MI5, but Diana Taverner shows little interest in investigating it and does not want Jackson Lamb informed. Flyte ignores that instruction and quietly takes the information to Lamb.

Lamb’s reaction is characteristically understated. He acts as though Struan means nothing to him, but he keeps the file and instructs Roddy Ho to begin checking on other former members of Slough House.

Why Was Struan Loy Killed?

Episode 1 does not yet reveal the exact reason Struan was selected. What becomes clear by the end of the episode is that his murder is not an isolated event.

Another former Slow Horse, Kay White, is also killed, and the assassins appear to be working from a list of people connected to Slough House. After Struan and Kay, their attention shifts toward River Cartwright.

That pattern changes the meaning of Struan’s opening scene. His killers do not seem interested in anything he has done since leaving MI5. They are interested in who he used to be.

The fact that Slough House is simultaneously being erased from the Park’s computer systems makes the timing even more suspicious. Its agents stop receiving their salaries, its official records disappear, and an estate agent unexpectedly turns up at the office. Someone appears to be dismantling Slough House administratively at the same time that someone else is eliminating people connected to it.

Season 6 has not yet confirmed whether those two operations are controlled by the same person. Still, Struan’s death establishes the central danger facing Lamb and his team: whatever happened in Slough House’s past has made both former and current Slow Horses targets.

Why Struan’s Return Matters

Struan may not have been one of the show’s most prominent characters, but using him as Season 6’s first victim is significant. He connects the new conspiracy directly back to the original Slough House team and shows that the threat extends much further than the agents currently sitting inside Lamb’s office.

It also gives Lamb an early warning that something is wrong. Diana is prepared to treat Struan’s death as an accident, but Lamb knows enough about the Service to distrust convenient explanations, especially when former agents start dying.

Struan spent years away from the world of Slow Horses, apparently believing his MI5 career was behind him. Season 6 brings him back only to reveal that leaving Slough House did not necessarily mean escaping its consequences.
