Apple TV’s Slow Horses began with a simple idea: MI5 agents who make career-ending mistakes are not always fired. Some are sent to Slough House, a deliberately miserable administrative outpost where Jackson Lamb presides over a collection of spies the Service would rather keep out of sight. Five seasons later, those same supposed failures have repeatedly found themselves cleaning up disasters created by people much higher up the intelligence ladder.
River Cartwright’s attempts to escape Slough House have remained at the center of the story, but Slow Horses has gradually expanded into something much larger. Diana Taverner has fought her way through the MI5 hierarchy, Lamb’s Cold War history has become increasingly important, and River has discovered that his own family is far more deeply connected to the intelligence world than he ever understood. With Season 6 bringing several old storylines back into play, here is where everything stands after the first five seasons.

Season 1: River Joins Slough House and Hassan Is Kidnapped
River Cartwright arrives at Slough House after a disastrous training exercise destroys his promising career at MI5. Instead of becoming the kind of field agent his legendary grandfather David Cartwright expected, River is placed under Jackson Lamb, whose team includes Catherine Standish, Louisa Guy, Min Harper, Roddy Ho and Sid Baker. Lamb treats them with open contempt, although it soon becomes clear that he is far more protective of his agents than he wants anyone to know.

Their routine is interrupted when British-Pakistani student Hassan Ahmed is kidnapped by a far-right group called the Sons of Albion. The abduction initially appears to be a genuine extremist operation, but River and the Slow Horses discover that Diana Taverner secretly arranged the kidnapping as an unauthorized false-flag operation. Her plan was to infiltrate the group with MI5 agent Alan Black, stage Hassan’s rescue and use the operation to damage the British far right while strengthening intelligence relations with Pakistan.
The operation collapses after the extremists turn on Alan and kill him. Hassan is suddenly in genuine danger, while Taverner attempts to contain the scandal and make Slough House carry the blame. Sid is also shot while investigating journalist Robert Hobden with River, and although she is taken away for treatment, Roddy later discovers that her official records have been erased. Her fate remains one of the show’s longest-running mysteries.

River, Louisa, Min and Lamb eventually track Hassan down before Curly can execute him. Hassan survives, but the Slow Horses receive little recognition for saving him because MI5 is more interested in covering up Taverner’s operation.
Season 1 also reveals the first major secret from Lamb’s past. Catherine has spent years idolizing her former boss, Charles Partner, believing he died by suicide. Lamb tells her that he supplied the gun Partner used, but the final flashback reveals something darker: Partner had been a Russian asset, and Lamb personally killed him on David Cartwright’s orders before staging the death as a suicide.
Season 2: The Cicadas Return and Min Harper Is Killed
Season 2 begins when former intelligence officer Dickie Bow dies after recognizing a man from his Cold War past. Lamb refuses to believe the death was natural, particularly after the word “cicada” is found on Dickie’s phone.

The Cicadas were supposedly Soviet sleeper agents planted inside British society and left dormant until they were needed. River follows Dickie’s suspected killer, Andrei Chernitsky, to the village of Upshott and begins investigating whether a network MI5 dismissed as an old Cold War myth might actually have survived. Lamb separately questions former KGB officer Nikolai Katinsky, who initially presents himself as an insignificant defector with limited knowledge of the operation.
At the same time, Min and Louisa become involved in an unofficial security assignment surrounding Russian businessman Arkady Pashkin and oligarch Ilya Nevsky. Min becomes suspicious of Pashkin’s people and follows them, only to be murdered after getting too close to the operation. His death devastates Louisa and turns what had been another Slough House investigation into something deeply personal.
The Russian conspiracy eventually turns out to contain several overlapping motives. Pashkin and his men are not trustworthy representatives of Nevsky, while Nevsky himself is murdered and robbed. River is manipulated into believing a plane is carrying a bomb toward London, causing him to call a major security alert that clears the area around the real target.

Behind everything is Katinsky. He is not the harmless former spy Lamb was led to believe, but the intelligence mastermind connected to the Cicada operation. His interest in Slough House is also personal because Charles Partner, the Russian mole Lamb killed, had been connected to him.
Katinsky tries to settle his old score with Lamb while Chernitsky goes after David Cartwright. Lamb anticipates the attack, allowing David to defend himself, while Lamb confronts Katinsky and leaves him with a gun containing a single bullet. Katinsky uses it to kill himself.
The victory does little to soften Min’s loss. When MI5 refuses to officially honor him as an agent killed in the line of duty, Lamb quietly ensures that a memorial plaque bearing Min’s name is placed in the church anyway.
Season 3: Catherine Is Kidnapped and MI5’s Footprint Scandal Is Exposed
Season 3 begins with an incident in Istanbul involving MI5 agent Alison Dunn. Alison discovers evidence relating to Footprint, a secret program involving experimental technology that MI5 tested despite serious consequences. When she attempts to expose what happened, she is killed and her death is made to look like a suicide.
A year later, Catherine Standish is kidnapped by Sean Donovan, Alison’s former partner. River is ordered to break into MI5 as part of what initially appears to be a ransom demand, only for the situation to be revealed as a security exercise involving private contractor Chieftain. The exercise, however, is only the surface of a much more elaborate scheme.
Diana Taverner has been secretly using Donovan and the operation to undermine First Desk Ingrid Tearney. Donovan wants access to the Footprint file to expose what happened to Alison, while Taverner wants the same scandal to destroy Tearney’s career. When Donovan refuses to follow the original plan and pushes deeper into an MI5 storage facility, Tearney responds by authorizing a deadly cleanup operation.

River, Louisa and the others become trapped inside the facility as armed men are sent to eliminate everyone who knows too much. Donovan eventually gets the Footprint file into River’s hands but dies during the confrontation, along with Ben Dunn. River survives and escapes with the evidence.
David Cartwright urges his grandson not to expose MI5 and burns what he believes is the only copy of the file. River, however, has finally learned to think like the spies around him and secretly made another copy. He leaks Footprint, destroying Tearney and contributing to the political downfall surrounding the operation.
Catherine suffers a more personal blow. She still speaks about Charles Partner with enormous respect until Lamb finally tells her that Partner spent years selling secrets to the Russians and used her alcoholism because it made her less likely to notice what he was doing. Catherine is furious and leaves Slough House, unaware that Lamb has still not told her the complete truth about his role in Partner’s death.
Taverner appears to have finally won her battle for control of MI5 after Tearney’s removal. That victory does not last as expected, because by Season 4 the Service has brought in an outsider, Claude Whelan, as First Desk instead.
Season 4: River Learns Frank Harkness Is His Father
Season 4 turns the show’s attention directly toward River’s family. A car bomb destroys the Westacres shopping center, while David Cartwright, whose memory is deteriorating, becomes convinced that someone is coming to kill him.
David’s paranoia turns out to be justified. A man arrives at his house pretending to be River, and David shoots him dead. Lamb identifies the body as River, but River is actually alive and uses the confusion to investigate the dead man’s identity. His search takes him to France and eventually to a former CIA operative named Frank Harkness.
Harkness has spent years creating and training a group of young assassins, many of whom are his own sons. River discovers that his mother, Isobel, became involved with Harkness decades earlier and that Frank is River’s biological father.

David had known about Harkness all along. Years earlier, he sent Sam Chapman to France with money, weapons and MI5 “cold body” identities in exchange for getting his daughter away from Frank. Those supposedly safe identities later become part of the present-day conspiracy, and Frank begins eliminating people who can connect him to what happened.
Frank’s son Patrice eventually attacks Slough House while David is being protected there. Marcus Longridge confronts Patrice and is killed during the assault, leaving Shirley devastated. Lamb and the team finally subdue Patrice, and when Shirley cannot bring herself to execute him in revenge, the usually quiet JK Coe takes the gun and kills Patrice himself.
River manages to capture Frank, but even that victory proves temporary. Frank has prepared evidence showing that MI5 and other intelligence services previously used his organization for covert killings. He threatens to release everything unless he is freed, leaving the authorities with little choice but to let him walk.
The season ends on a much quieter note. River moves David into a care home because his grandfather can no longer safely live alone, a decision that breaks both of their hearts. Lamb, who rarely offers comfort directly, invites River for a drink, reinforcing the increasingly obvious reality that he has become a reluctant father figure to him just as River learns what kind of man his biological father really is.
Season 5: Tara Uses Roddy and London Faces a Destabilization Campaign
Season 5 finds the Slow Horses still dealing with the damage left by Frank Harkness. Shirley is struggling with Marcus’ death, River is worried about David, and Louisa decides that she has finally had enough of Slough House and leaves.
The new crisis begins with a mass shooting at the fictional Abbotsfield estate. At roughly the same time, Roddy Ho introduces his colleagues to Tara, his new girlfriend. Roddy believes the relationship proves everyone has underestimated him, but the rest of Slough House quickly suspects that Tara’s interest in him may not be genuine.
Their suspicions are correct. Tara has been using Roddy to gain access to MI5 systems, taking advantage of his desire to impress her. The Abbotsfield shooting is followed by other incidents around London, and the Slow Horses gradually recognize an old destabilization strategy in which apparently unrelated attacks are used to create panic, disrupt infrastructure and overwhelm the government.
The plan eventually points toward the assassination of a political figure. Shirley and Catherine protect London Mayor Zafar Jaffrey and prevent an attempt on his life, while River and Coe watch his populist rival Dennis Gimball. Gimball nevertheless dies in one of the show’s darkest comic accidents when Coe climbs down scaffolding and inadvertently causes a heavy paint can to fall onto his head.

His accidental death still satisfies the terrorists’ plan because the destabilization strategy required the death of a populist political figure. More importantly, Gimball’s dictaphone contains damaging material involving Claude Whelan, something Lamb later realizes can be turned into leverage.
Tara is eventually taken into MI5 custody and claims she was forced into helping the group. She convinces the Park to let her participate in an operation at Piccadilly Circus while also persuading them to run code she supposedly received from the terrorists.
It is another trap. Tara escapes surveillance, while the code shuts down MI5’s computer systems and effectively blinds the Service. Her connection to the attackers is deeper than she admitted, and their campaign is motivated by anger over Britain’s role in Libya and what they regard as the country’s abandonment afterward.
The Slow Horses Stop the Final Season 5 Attack
Tara takes control of the Libyan embassy and demands a huge payment while threatening another attack. Lamb realizes the final target is likely the multi-faith center at Abbotsfield, bringing the operation back to the location where the campaign began.
River, Shirley and Coe reach the site and stop the remaining gunmen from carrying out another massacre. Lamb also anticipates Tara’s attempted escape and is waiting when she tries to get away from the embassy.
Even then, the operation is not finished. During a conversation with David, River realizes the terrorists may have planned a final “sting in the tail” after everyone believes the crisis is over. He works out that the last attacker is targeting Claude Whelan and reaches him in time to save his life.
Whelan later tries to shut Slough House down and appears willing to reward River with a return to the Park. Lamb responds with the recording recovered from Gimball’s dictaphone and threatens to expose Whelan unless he leaves Slough House alone, restores Roddy and accepts the consequences himself.

Whelan’s career is effectively finished, and Diana Taverner finally takes over as First Desk. River, despite once again proving himself, remains at Slough House under Lamb.
Season 5 closes with one final glimpse into Lamb’s past. Earlier, he tells a story about an intelligence officer whose feet were burned during torture, before dismissing it as something he invented. In the final scene, the camera reveals severe scarring on the bottom of Lamb’s own foot, suggesting that the story was really about him and that there are still large parts of his Cold War history the series has not explained.
Where Everyone Stands Before Slow Horses Season 6
After five seasons, Slough House is still standing, but very little around it is unchanged. Diana Taverner is finally running MI5, while Claude Whelan has been pushed out. River remains one of Lamb’s agents despite repeatedly trying to earn his way back to the Park, and his relationship with David has become increasingly painful as his grandfather’s dementia progresses.
Shirley is still grieving Marcus, Roddy has returned after Tara’s betrayal, Catherine has found her way back into the Slough House orbit, and JK Coe has revealed just how dangerous he can be when necessary. Louisa has stepped away, while Frank Harkness remains alive and free after forcing MI5 to release him.
Two older threads also remain particularly important. River now knows the truth about Frank and his family, while Sid Baker’s disappearance has never been properly resolved within the first five seasons. Lamb, meanwhile, continues to protect his agents while revealing almost nothing about himself, even as the scars, secrets and betrayals of his past increasingly refuse to stay buried.
