Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 1 Recap and Ending Explained

Season 6 of Slow Horses opens with Slough House facing a threat unlike the political conspiracies and terrorist plots that have previously dragged Jackson Lamb’s team into action. This time, someone appears to be working through the unit’s past, finding people who once belonged to Slough House and eliminating them one by one.

The timing could hardly be worse for River Cartwright. He is mourning the death of David Cartwright and preparing to bury the grandfather who shaped nearly every part of his life, while the rest of the team discovers that Slough House itself appears to have vanished from MI5’s systems. By the end of Episode 1, those two stories begin moving toward each other, with River unknowingly placed directly in the path of the killers.

Struan Loy Is Killed

The first familiar face to return is Struan Loy, although his comeback is brutally short-lived. After leaving the Service, Struan has created an unusual new life for himself as a martial arts instructor while trying to build a business around compact homes made from shipping containers. He believes in the concept enough to live in one himself.

Two strangers arrive pretending to be interested in what he is selling. Struan initially treats them as potential customers and happily allows them inside, but their behavior soon makes him realize that the visit is not what it appears to be. Before he has a chance to protect himself, they overpower him.

The pair set the container on fire and lock Struan inside, leaving his death to look like an accident. It is a calculated killing because the method gives investigators little immediate reason to suspect that a former MI5 agent has been deliberately targeted.

Flyte Warns Jackson Lamb

Struan’s death reaches Emma Flyte, the head of the Dogs at the Park. Because he previously worked at Slough House, normal procedure should bring Jackson Lamb into the conversation, but Diana Taverner has no interest in doing that.

Now sitting at the top of MI5, Taverner dismisses Struan’s death as an accident and tells Flyte there is no reason to involve Lamb. Flyte remains uncomfortable with that decision and quietly takes the file to him anyway.

Lamb is eating at the Italian restaurant near Slough House when Flyte approaches him. As usual, he behaves as though the death of a former employee means very little to him, but his actions reveal the opposite. He keeps the information and tells Roddy Ho to start checking what has happened to other people who once passed through Slough House.

Lamb may not yet know who is responsible, but he clearly does not believe Struan’s death should be dismissed as casually as Taverner wants.

Slough House Disappears From MI5

While Lamb is beginning to look into Struan, something equally strange is happening inside Slough House. Coe encounters an unfamiliar man in the building and immediately treats him as a possible threat, knocking him unconscious with Roddy’s keyboard before anyone can establish why he is there.

The man turns out to be an estate agent rather than an assassin. That explanation creates an entirely different problem because there should be no reason for an estate agent to be wandering around Slough House unless somebody believes the property is becoming available.

The team then discovers that their salaries have not arrived. Roddy starts investigating and uncovers something much bigger than a payroll problem. Slough House no longer appears to exist inside MI5’s records.

Its information has not simply become inaccessible. The unit appears to have been deliberately removed from the Park’s systems.

Lamb initially reacts in typical fashion and walks out, arguing that there is little point working for an organization that has stopped paying him. Catherine Standish takes the issue more seriously and heads to the Park, where she convinces Moira to investigate what happened.

What Moira finds changes the situation. The deletion was not caused by an administrative mistake or a technical failure. Someone with significant authority deliberately ordered Slough House to be erased.

River Buries David Cartwright

Away from Slough House, River is dealing with the death of David Cartwright. Their relationship had become increasingly difficult as David’s health deteriorated, particularly after River made the painful decision to move him into a care home, but David remained the most important figure in River’s life.

The funeral forces River to confront another contradiction in his grandfather’s legacy. David spent much of his life serving MI5 at the highest levels, but most of that work can never be publicly acknowledged. His official identity at the service therefore reduces an extraordinary intelligence career to the much safer cover story of a man who worked in transportation.

River tries to honor both versions of his grandfather in his eulogy. He cannot tell the congregation what David actually did, yet he also does not want the man he knew to disappear behind an official fiction.

Lamb and Taverner are among those attending the funeral, which also gives Lamb an opportunity to confront her about Slough House being deleted from MI5’s systems. Taverner maintains that the situation must be some kind of mistake, even though the evidence Standish has uncovered suggests otherwise.

Peter Judd Raises Another Mystery

Taverner also crosses paths with Peter Judd at the funeral. Their conversation introduces another unexplained thread when Judd refers to money taken from him by the Park and says the funds originally came from a wealthy benefactor.

The identity of that benefactor is not revealed in Episode 1, but the exchange is clearly positioned as something that will matter later. With Slough House being removed from official records and former agents beginning to die, the suggestion of hidden money and an unidentified wealthy figure adds another layer to the conspiracy forming around Taverner.

For now, the connection between these events remains uncertain. The episode deliberately gives viewers several pieces of information without showing how they fit together.

Frank Harkness Returns

River receives another shock after the funeral when he notices Frank Harkness outside the church. Frank is not simply another former intelligence operative. Season 4 revealed that he is River’s biological father, making his appearance at David’s funeral immediately suspicious.

Frank claims he came for sentimental reasons, but River has learned enough about him to know that sentiment rarely explains his actions. Their exchange becomes more painful when Frank points out that River’s mother has not attended her own father’s funeral.

River refuses to allow Frank to leave without getting answers and follows him back to his car. When Frank tries to drive away, River even jumps onto the vehicle in an attempt to stop him, but Frank manages to shake him off and escape.

The encounter leaves River with no clearer idea of why his father has returned. Frank’s presence is particularly alarming because another threat is already moving toward the Cartwright family without River knowing it.

Kay White Becomes the Second Victim

Struan is not the only former Slow Horse who dies in Episode 1. The same killers also target Kay White, another person connected to Slough House.

Kay is murdered at home, confirming exactly what Lamb feared when he asked Roddy to start checking on former agents. Struan’s death was not an isolated accident. Somebody has a list, and the people on it share the same connection. The killers do not stop after Kay. As they prepare to move on, they select another name from their targets.

That person is River Cartwright.

Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 1 Ending Explained: Why Are Former Slow Horses Being Killed?

Episode 1 does not yet reveal who ordered the killings or why former Slough House agents have become targets. What it does establish is that the deaths are coordinated. Struan and Kay are deliberately selected, and the assassins are working through a predetermined group rather than choosing victims randomly.

Their connection to Slough House is therefore the most important clue. Someone appears to be eliminating people who have belonged to the unit, while at almost exactly the same time Slough House itself is being removed from MI5’s administrative systems.

The two events are difficult to dismiss as coincidence. Erasing the unit could make its current agents harder to track through normal Service channels, but it could also be an attempt to remove an institutional record before something happens to the people attached to it. Episode 1 stops short of confirming which explanation is correct.

Taverner’s behavior makes the mystery even more complicated. She tells Flyte not to involve Lamb in Struan’s death and later claims Slough House’s disappearance from the system must be a mistake. Neither response necessarily proves she ordered what happened, but both ensure that Lamb has reasons to question what the new First Desk actually knows.

Why Is River the Next Target?

The final twist makes the danger personal. After killing Struan and Kay, the assassins apparently choose River as their next victim.

River is different from the first two targets because he is still an active Slow Horse. That suggests the killers may not simply be cleaning up forgotten former agents. Their campaign could be moving from Slough House’s past toward the people who currently work there.

Frank Harkness appearing on the same day gives River’s situation another layer of uncertainty. Episode 1 does not establish that Frank is connected to the assassins, and his presence at David’s funeral could have an entirely separate purpose. Still, his return just as River becomes a target is too significant for River or the audience to ignore.

Lamb, meanwhile, has already begun connecting the deaths before he knows that River is next. The opening episode therefore leaves Season 6 with three intertwined mysteries: who is killing the Slow Horses, why someone inside MI5 ordered Slough House erased, and whether Frank Harkness has returned because he knows what is coming.
