It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 18 Episode 5 gives the McPoyle brothers an appropriately gruesome new connection. Liam McPoyle has been missing his right eye since the disastrous Maureen Ponderosa wedding, and Season 11 eventually revealed that Pappy McPoyle’s violent bird Royal was responsible for the injury. In The Gang Goes to the Ren Faire, Ryan ends up losing an eye as well after Dee secretly convinces him to replace Mac in a dangerous joust. The new injury deliberately brings Liam’s long-running eye joke full circle, even ending with an “eye for an eye” line.

How did Liam McPoyle originally lose his eye?

Liam loses his eye during Season 8 Episode 3, The Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre. He is supposed to marry Maureen Ponderosa, but the celebration turns violent after Bill Ponderosa spikes the McPoyles’ milk with bath salts. The drugged wedding guests begin attacking each other, creating enough confusion that the exact cause of Liam’s injury is initially unclear.

When Liam appears again in Season 9, the damage is permanent and he wears a flesh-colored patch over his missing eye. He and Ryan blame the Gang and the Ponderosas for what happened, even demanding compensation when Dennis and Mac attempt to settle old grudges during Thanksgiving. The bizarre patch and Liam’s difficulty adjusting to one-eyed life turn the injury into one of the character’s defining visual features.

Did Ryan stab Liam in the eye at the wedding?

For a while, the series allows Ryan to remain a possible suspect in Liam’s injury. The question returns in Season 11 Episode 7, McPoyle vs. Ponderosa: The Trial of the Century, when the family pursues legal action against Bill Ponderosa over what happened at the wedding. Testimony suggests that Ryan may have stabbed Liam while everyone was under the influence of the spiked milk.

Charlie eventually proves that explanation wrong. The real attacker was Royal McPoyle, Pappy’s aggressive bird, which attacked Liam during the wedding and took his eye. Royal then attacks the Lawyer during the trial as well, giving the courtroom a firsthand demonstration of exactly how Liam’s injury could have happened.

Why is an eye part of the Season 18 Ren Faire wager?

Season 18 Episode 5 brings Pappy, Liam and Ryan back when Frank tries to purchase the McPoyles’ Renaissance Faire property. Pappy refuses Frank’s offer, and their argument eventually turns into a series of ridiculous challenges over who has more honor. After a disputed staring contest, Pappy demands that the disagreement be settled through a joust.

Frank chooses Mac to compete for him, while Liam represents the McPoyle side. The McPoyles then add a particularly personal condition to the wager: if Frank’s champion loses, they want Mac’s “beautiful baby brown” eye. Mac immediately loses his enthusiasm for jousting, although Frank eventually convinces him by promising him a prized spot on the Quilt of Legends.

Why does Ryan replace Mac in the joust?

Dee secretly convinces Ryan to take Mac’s place because she has spent the entire episode trying to prove that women are capable of driving a story. Earlier, she overhears that Ryan has fallen out of favor with Pappy because of his poor investments, while Liam has become the family’s favored son. Dee recognizes that Ryan’s insecurity gives her exactly the person she needs for her larger scheme.

She also understands Mac well enough to know that his talk about bravery and destiny will disappear once his actual eye is at risk. Dee therefore uses Ryan’s desire to change his family status and Mac’s cowardice to engineer the switch without telling the rest of the Gang. When she explains everything afterward, she proudly describes herself as the person who manipulated every major event into place.

How does Ryan lose his eye in Season 18?

Ryan enters the joust in Mac’s place, meaning he also inherits the consequences attached to Mac’s side of the wager. Frank’s champion loses the contest, and the McPoyles enforce their agreement by taking the promised eye. The disguise is exposed when the injured man cries out and Liam realizes that the victim is actually Ryan.

The moment is accompanied by the line “an eye for an eye,” making the connection to Liam’s history explicit rather than accidental. Liam has spent years living with a missing eye, and now his own brother suffers a similar injury during another absurd McPoyle family disaster. Ryan’s punishment is particularly cruel because Dee selected him specifically as a disposable replacement for Mac.

Is Liam responsible for Ryan losing his eye?

Liam participates on the winning McPoyle side, but Dee is the person who knowingly places Ryan in danger. She knows an eye has become collateral in the wager and convinces Ryan to impersonate Mac anyway, all because she wants to create the most memorable story at the faire. Ryan makes the decision to participate, but Dee is the architect of the switch.

The sequence also shows how little concern anyone has for Ryan once the reveal occurs. Dee is much more interested in explaining how cleverly she manipulated the day’s events than in the fact that someone just lost an eye because of her plan. Even the rest of the Gang quickly shifts its attention toward whether Dee has finally earned a place on the Quilt of Legends.

Why is Ryan’s injury such a fitting McPoyle callback?

Liam’s missing eye has been part of the McPoyle mythology since Season 8, eventually generating an entire courtroom episode devoted to establishing what really happened. Season 18 takes that history and turns it into a new joke rather than simply reminding viewers about Liam’s old injury. After years of Ryan helping his one-eyed brother, the two now share an even stranger physical connection.

The symmetry also fits the McPoyles’ habit of turning every family disagreement into something grotesque. Liam’s eye was lost during a drug-fueled wedding involving Pappy and Royal, while Ryan’s disappears during a Renaissance Faire joust created by another Pappy dispute. For a family obsessed with bloodlines and loyalty, both brothers ending up marked by separate McPoyle disasters feels almost inevitable.
