Vigil Season 3 leaves Svalbard behind for its finale, but the conspiracy becomes even more dangerous once Amy Silva and Shen Jia reach Scotland. Episode 6 reveals that the fight over Jia’s biofuel was never simply Britain against China or the West against Russia. British intelligence and the United States have both been working to control what happens to the discovery, even when that means allowing people to die.

The finale also resolves Vincent Mair’s murder, Chloe Ackroyd’s involvement, Gordon Laity’s secret project and Shen Jia’s future. For Amy, solving the case comes with a much more personal price: she effectively sacrifices her police career to keep Jia alive.

Who Attacks Amy and Shen Jia?

Amy and Jia survive the attack that ended Episode 5 and manage to escape before their attackers can take them. Back in Scotland, the authorities examine dashcam footage while Kirsten tries to establish who knew about the transport route.

Amy initially has little reason to know which country is responsible. China is openly demanding Jia’s return, and British officials are under enormous diplomatic pressure because Britain remains dependent on Chinese rare earth materials for its energy plans.

Sir Ian Downing tells Amy that the Home Secretary has authorized Jia’s deportation. Amy refuses. She knows Jia could be imprisoned or killed if she is returned after defecting with such sensitive research. That decision puts Amy on the other side of the law. A warrant is issued for her arrest for protecting Jia and refusing a direct government order.

Why Does Amy Refuse to Hand Jia Over?

Amy’s position is straightforward. Britain promised Jia protection in exchange for her cooperation, and Amy refuses to abandon that promise simply because protecting her has become politically inconvenient.

Jia considers releasing her research publicly, but another possibility emerges when Kirsten discovers something unusual in the evidence from Vincent Mair’s destroyed laboratory.

Energy Minister Gordon Laity had collected a carved object from Vincent’s possessions after the explosion. Jia immediately recognizes its importance. It was the object she had used to hide the second bacterial sample she gave Vincent. If the carving survived, Jia’s sample may have survived as well.

What Did Gordon Laity Do With Jia’s Sample?

Amy and Jia confront Gordon, and his reaction effectively confirms their suspicion. The British government recovered the sample and began developing Jia’s bacterium without her knowledge.

Gordon argues that Britain is facing an energy security crisis and cannot afford to surrender technology that could give the country greater independence. At the same time, the government intends to send Jia back to China to protect its wider diplomatic relationship. In other words, Britain wants Jia’s discovery without Jia.

Information connected to the secret research leads Amy and Jia to Gem Fusion, a laboratory where the bacterium is already being developed. The timing becomes crucial because the work began before Vincent’s death. That means British officials had secretly obtained the sample while Vincent was still alive.

Why Is Chloe Ackroyd So Important?

While Amy is protecting Jia, Kirsten returns to another unresolved part of the investigation: Chloe Ackroyd. Kirsten had been told that Chloe remained unconscious. She discovers that Chloe has actually been awake for two days. Soon afterward, a man posing as a police officer arrives at the hospital and attempts to get Chloe alone.

Kirsten realizes he is not the officer who was supposed to take over the protection shift. The man is exposed as Scott Matthews, Chloe’s intelligence handler. After Kirsten prevents him from killing Chloe, Chloe finally explains how deeply she was involved.

Years earlier, Chloe had begun selling information to a Chinese contact because she was in debt. British intelligence eventually caught her and threatened her with a lengthy prison sentence. Instead of prosecuting her immediately, they turned her into an informant and ordered her to continue dealing with the Chinese while reporting everything to Scott.

Did Chloe Know She Was Carrying the Bomb?

No. Chloe continues to insist that she did not know the laptop had been turned into a bomb. Her Chinese contacts asked her to obtain Jason Collyer’s laptop. Chloe took it while Jason was sleeping and gave it to them, believing they wanted the information stored on it. She later received it back.

The crucial new detail is that Chloe then showed the laptop to Scott Matthews before it was returned to Jason. Scott took it away for approximately an hour and later told her everything was fine. Chloe says she reported everything she did to Scott.

That means British intelligence had an opportunity to examine the laptop after it had been in Chinese hands and before Jason carried it to Vincent Mair’s laboratory.

Who Killed Vincent Mair?

The finale reveals that the bomb originated through the Chinese operation, but British intelligence knowingly allowed the attack to proceed. Scott Matthews inspected the laptop after the Chinese had altered it. Rather than stopping the attack or warning Vincent, he allowed the laptop to continue toward the laboratory. Scott was working directly for Sir Ian Downing.

Jasmine Kelly initially does not know the full extent of Scott’s activities because he was operating outside the normal chain of command. Once she speaks to him herself, the cover-up collapses. Sir Ian knew the laptop was carrying explosives and knew Vincent was the target. He did not plant the bomb himself, but he deliberately allowed Vincent to die.

Why Did Sir Ian Downing Let Vincent Die?

Vincent threatened Britain’s attempt to control Jia’s technology. Jia and Vincent intended to distribute samples to scientists from many countries during the COP31 climate conference. Their logic was simple: once laboratories around the world possessed the bacterium, no government could monopolize it or make the discovery disappear. Britain wanted the opposite. Officials wanted to develop the technology secretly and use it to improve the country’s energy independence. Vincent’s plan threatened that advantage.

Sir Ian defends his actions by arguing that Britain has become dangerously dependent on larger powers for energy and critical materials. In his view, someone has to make decisions that conventional law enforcement would never accept. Amy and Kirsten reject that argument for what it is. Ian knew a British citizen was about to be murdered, allowed it to happen and later tried to cover his involvement by having Chloe killed.

Why Are the Americans Still Trying to Stop Jia?

The American conspiracy does not end with Garcia’s arrest. The finale introduces Teddy Ward, who speaks with Gordon Laity at COP31 and is clearly concerned about reports of a Chinese scientist possessing technology capable of destroying the oil and gas market. A later phone conversation reveals that Ward is connected to the armed operation pursuing Amy and Jia. The same American interest appears again when armed men arrive at the Gem Fusion laboratory.

Sir Ian eventually concludes that the attackers are working for the Americans. The United States has just committed $10 billion to Britain’s Svalbard seabed-mining project, giving Washington a major interest in protecting the existing strategy. Jia’s biofuel threatens to make much of that geopolitical competition obsolete.

Vigil Season 3 Episode 6

What Happens to Gordon Laity and Sir Ian Downing?

Amy and Kirsten confront Sir Ian with the evidence at COP31. Jasmine Kelly confirms Scott Matthews was operating directly for Ian, destroying his attempt to distance himself from the conspiracy. Sir Ian is arrested on suspicion of being an accessory to murder, attempted murder and conspiring with a foreign power.

Gordon Laity is also arrested, this time on suspicion of fraud and conspiracy to murder. His role in suppressing the environmental report and secretly developing Jia’s stolen sample has finally caught up with him.

Their arrests do not instantly dismantle every government interest surrounding the project, but they prevent the case from being quietly buried.

Ending Explained: What Does Shen Jia Do With the Biofuel?

Jia understands that hiding the bacterium will only keep the cycle going. Every government wants to either possess the discovery or stop someone else from possessing it. She chooses a third option.

At COP31, Jia publicly explains what she found in Svalbard. The bacterium consumes carbon dioxide and can produce large quantities of clean biofuel which, when burned, produces water rather than the pollution associated with conventional fossil fuels. More importantly, Jia reveals that she has brought live samples with her.

She invites scientists attending the conference to come forward and help develop the technology. By distributing the work internationally, Jia achieves what she and Vincent had originally planned. No single government can easily control the discovery anymore.

Does Shen Jia Get Asylum?

The finale does not explicitly confirm that Jia has been granted asylum. However, after she goes public and the conspiracy is exposed, the situation changes completely. British authorities can no longer quietly deport her under the arrangement Sir Ian was trying to enforce.

Robertson indicates that Jia’s asylum claim will now have to be properly considered. Her immediate future remains technically unresolved, but the ending clearly places her in a much safer position than she was earlier in the episode.

Why Does Amy Silva Resign?

Amy’s actions save Jia, expose Sir Ian and help solve Vincent’s murder, but she still repeatedly broke orders and the law while doing it. At the end, Amy asks whether she is going to be arrested. Robertson makes it clear that there is little appetite to prosecute her after everything the investigation has uncovered, but there is a condition. Amy has to resign. She accepts.

The moment is important because Amy does not regret her decision. She knowingly chose Jia’s life and the truth over protecting her career. Kirsten made essentially the same choice when she helped Amy despite knowing what it could cost them professionally. The season closes with both women acknowledging that they would make those choices again. The case is over, but Amy Silva is no longer a serving detective, giving any future season of Vigil a very different place from which to begin.
