The Traitors Ireland returns to Slane Castle with 23 new players, but Season 2 wastes very little time before making its first major change to the game. Siobhán McSweeney initially selects Fionula, Páraic K and Carla as the three Traitors, only to reveal later that the selection process is not actually finished. The premiere also ends with every single player vulnerable to murder after Donal persuades the group to give up immunity. By the final scene, the original Traitors have secretly chosen a fourth member, whose identity is hidden from viewers and who gets the final say over the season’s first murder.

The lying begins before anyone becomes a Traitor

Episode 1 makes an amusing point before the official game even starts: several contestants are already hiding information from one another. Denis introduces himself as a writer without immediately advertising that he is also a qualified psychotherapist, presumably because being professionally skilled at reading people could make him an early target. DJ similarly plays down his job in car sales and presents himself as working in the parts side of the business.

Fionula has perhaps the most useful secret of all. She tells the group that she teaches drama but does not initially make much of the fact that she is also an actor, a profession that could immediately make other players suspicious of her ability to perform. The irony becomes clear soon afterward when that exact skill set becomes considerably more valuable.

Who are the first three Traitors?

Siobhán chooses Fionula, Páraic K and Carla as the first three Traitors during the blindfolded selection at the Round Table. Fionula is visibly delighted in her private interview, while Páraic K quickly embraces the challenge and Carla is equally pleased to have landed on the murdering side of the game. None of them knows who the other two are at this stage.

When everyone removes their blindfolds, the search for microscopic clues begins almost immediately. Sean A’s expression attracts attention, while Edelle drinking her water becomes enough for someone to wonder whether nerves caused it. Carla has a much better opening because other contestants start describing her as obviously Faithful, giving her useful protection before she has had to do much work to earn it.

Siobhán then drops an important clue that the contestants cannot properly interpret. She announces that the Traitor selection process is not finished, leading some Faithfuls to wonder whether the earlier shoulder taps were even real. The uncertainty gives the actual Traitors an unexpected extra layer of camouflage.

What happens during the dolmen mission?

The first mission requires the players to transport pieces of a large dolmen back to a sacred circle and correctly assemble it. The group can earn as much as €6,500, but carrying certain pieces requires players to sacrifice themselves and remain behind in shackles. Anyone sacrificed loses the chance to stand in the sacred circle and therefore becomes vulnerable to the first murder.

Edelle and Carla are among the earliest volunteers, followed by several others as the challenge continues. Fionula eventually sacrifices herself as well, although her timing later attracts attention because some contestants begin wondering whether a Traitor might deliberately volunteer. The group ultimately completes the monument and takes €5,500 for the prize pot. The more important result, however, has nothing to do with money.

Why does Donal give up everyone’s immunity?

Once the dolmen is complete, the remaining players are supposed to receive immunity by standing inside the sacred circle. Donal instead suggests that they remain outside it so that the contestants who completed the mission do not enjoy protection denied to everyone who sacrificed themselves earlier. The proposal is immediately embraced as a show of solidarity.

That leaves all 23 contestants available for murder. Donal receives plenty of praise in the moment, but the strategic consequences become obvious almost instantly. The Traitors no longer have to work around a protected group and can choose from the entire cast.

Carla privately notices exactly how useful that is for the Traitors and jokingly treats Donal’s decision as suspicious. Other players also begin questioning whether the apparently generous gesture was actually too convenient. Donal enters the castle as one of the heroes of the mission and finishes the same sequence with the first real cloud of suspicion over him.

Who is already under suspicion?

Fionula faces one of the more dangerous early theories after players discuss whether a Traitor might have intentionally sacrificed themselves during the mission. Her behavior around the later sacrifices is noticed, creating the kind of small observation that can become disproportionately important in The Traitors. Páraic K, meanwhile, appears to have much less immediate heat.

Edelle also remains a name worth watching. Her reaction after the original Traitor selection had already attracted attention, and Laura and another player later identify her as their leading suspicion. That makes what happens in the conclave particularly interesting because the Traitors themselves are simultaneously evaluating Edelle for a completely different reason.

Episode 1 ending: Who becomes the fourth Traitor?

Fionula, Páraic K and Carla finally meet each other at their first conclave, but Siobhán has another surprise waiting. Instead of simply ordering the trio to select their first murder victim, she instructs them to recruit a fourth Traitor. Sean A, Laura and Edelle emerge as the three candidates viewers hear them seriously discuss.

Sean A is valued because he appears persuasive and capable of gaining people’s trust. Laura is seen as intelligent, fierce and potentially underestimated, while Edelle already appears socially connected and could become an influential Faithful if allowed to remain on the other side. The three Traitors eventually agree on someone and send the invitation.

Episode 1 intentionally refuses to show who accepts it. The mystery player takes the Traitors’ oath, but the camera protects their identity, and Siobhán adds one final complication: this fourth Traitor will have the final say on the first murder. The premiere therefore ends without revealing either the new Traitor or the first victim, giving Episode 2 two immediate mysteries to resolve.
