Netflix’s The Perfect Lie spends most of its season dismantling the comfortable image surrounding the Dinner Club. Karen enters the group believing she has found the kind of wealthy, close-knit circle that might finally make her new town feel like home, only to discover that almost every marriage and friendship is being held together by some combination of secrecy, resentment and self-preservation. The finale resolves the biggest lie surrounding Evert’s death, but it refuses to leave the group with anything resembling peace. Hanneke’s attack remains unsolved, and the final hospital scene makes clear that somebody still has a reason to fear what she remembers.

Babette Was Responsible for Evert’s Death

The investigation into Evert’s death is built around the assumption that he tried to kill his family and himself by drugging them before setting the house on fire. That version of events allows Babette to survive as the grieving wife of an abusive man, while Evert becomes the easiest person to blame for everything that happened inside the house.

The finale overturns that story. Babette was the person who drugged the family and started the fire. Her marriage to Evert had become destructive enough that she was no longer thinking in terms of separation or reconciliation. She had reached the point where death seemed preferable to allowing the relationship to end on someone else’s terms.

Her plan does not unfold exactly as intended because Luuk never drinks the sedative-laced tea. Once Babette realizes her son is still conscious, the fantasy of a controlled family death begins to collapse. Luuk attempts to help his father and finds the second phone that ultimately becomes crucial to exposing what really happened.

Karen later discovers the recordings on that phone, giving police the evidence they need to move against Babette. Evert’s death is therefore not an unsolved murder by the end of the season. The larger mystery shifts to Hanneke.

Who Pushed Hanneke Off the Balcony?

The series never reveals who pushed Hanneke. Her fall is deliberately left as the major unresolved crime going into the final scene, and several characters still have enough missing time or motive to remain suspicious.

Police appear increasingly interested in Babette, partly because of what is uncovered about Evert’s death and partly because her jealousy toward Hanneke has been obvious for some time. Babette believed Hanneke had feelings for Evert, giving her a personal reason to resent her. Once Babette’s capacity for extreme violence is exposed, it becomes easy to imagine her being responsible for Hanneke as well. That may be exactly why she works so well as a red herring.

Patricia remains another credible possibility. Hanneke was attacked at Patricia’s house, and Patricia has access to the property. More importantly, Patricia tells police that she spent the entire evening with Simon, but viewers already know that account is false because she was secretly watching Simon and Karen.

The gaps in Patricia’s timeline matter. The finale never explains exactly where she was for the entire period surrounding Hanneke’s fall, and her increasingly erratic behavior makes it difficult to dismiss her.

Still, none of this is confirmation. Hanneke is the only person likely to know who was with her immediately before she fell, which is why her return to consciousness becomes so dangerous.

Why Hanneke Waking Up Changes Everything

Hanneke spends much of the latter part of the season in a coma, preventing investigators from obtaining the one account that could resolve the balcony mystery. That makes the finale’s last development particularly important. She begins to wake.

If Hanneke remembers the confrontation that preceded her fall, she could potentially identify the person responsible. That also means anyone who pushed her suddenly has a reason to make sure she never speaks.

The final hospital sequence plays directly on that possibility. A hooded figure enters Hanneke’s room as she is regaining consciousness and quietly locks the door behind them. The series cuts away before showing the person’s face or explaining why they are there.

The staging makes the moment threatening, but the show is careful not to prove that the visitor intends to kill Hanneke. The get-well balloon complicates the scene enough that the person could just as easily be someone visiting secretly for another reason.

Who Is the Hooded Person in Hanneke’s Hospital Room?

The finale does not identify the hooded visitor, but the person’s apparent height makes some suspects less convincing than others. Simon, Michel and Ivo appear less likely based purely on the physical presentation of the figure.

One possibility is Karen’s daughter. She has a genuine emotional connection with Hanneke, fits the figure’s smaller build more comfortably and appears to know something about the night of the attack that she does not fully reveal to Ivo. If she is the person entering the room, the secrecy may have nothing to do with an attempted murder. She could simply be trying to see Hanneke without involving the adults. Patricia is the more threatening possibility.

Her whereabouts remain uncertain, she has access to the house where Hanneke fell and she lies about her movements during the relevant period. The finale also never fully accounts for her earlier violent behavior toward Karen, when she attacks her car with a sword and nearly harms her. Patricia therefore fits the show’s pattern of characters appearing outwardly controlled while behaving very differently when their relationships begin to collapse.

Even so, identifying Patricia as the hooded visitor would go beyond what the finale proves. The scene is designed to preserve both possibilities: someone may be trying to silence Hanneke, or someone may simply be reaching her before everybody else can.

Do Karen and Michel Get Back Together?

Karen and Michel finish the season in a more hopeful position than most of the Dinner Club. Their marriage nearly collapses after Karen admits her affair with Simon, and Michel initially leaves while their daughter chooses to live with him.

By the ending, however, Karen reveals that she and Michel are going on a date. It is not presented as a complete reconciliation, and the series does not pretend that one conversation fixes what happened between them. Instead, they appear willing to begin again without the elaborate lies that damaged their marriage in the first place.

Simon and Patricia move in the opposite direction. Although their legal troubles end without destroying them financially, Simon appears increasingly trapped inside Patricia’s world. Patricia’s family influence protects them, but that protection also gives her even greater control over their marriage.

Ivo receives a more personal form of release as he finally begins confronting the truth about his sexuality. Whether that honesty can repair anything with Hanneke depends entirely on what happens when she wakes.

The Ending Solves One Lie and Leaves Another Waiting

The Perfect Lie ultimately closes Evert’s case while deliberately keeping Hanneke’s story unfinished. Babette’s guilt explains the fire, the sedatives and the false narrative surrounding her husband’s death. The balcony attack is different because the only surviving witness has been unable to speak.

That is why the final hospital scene matters more than another late-season twist would have. Hanneke waking means the truth may finally be available, while the hooded visitor proves that somebody else understands the danger of that happening.

For now, Patricia is one of the more suspicious possibilities behind Hanneke’s fall, but the series does not confirm her guilt. The same caution applies to the person entering the hospital room. The finale gives viewers enough evidence to suspect several people, but it saves the one answer that could bring the Dinner Club’s last major lie into the open.
