Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Episode 9 takes the group’s multiverse problem somewhere Stuart should theoretically have an advantage: inside a comic book. What initially looks like another bizarre trap quickly becomes an escape mission through Gotham City and Central City, complete with the Flash, Mr. Freeze, the Cosmic Treadmill and another intervention from the Adversary.

The episode also pushes the larger season story forward beneath all the comic-book jokes. Stuart and the others appear to find a way back, but the closing moments reveal that their journey is still far from over.

Stuart and the Others Are Trapped Inside a Comic Book

Episode 9 opens with Stuart and his companions literally stuck on the cover of a comic book. Instead of merely being transported into a superhero universe, they initially appear frozen as characters printed onto the cover, while Bert has somehow already found his way onto page two.

Following Bert’s directions, the others move through the comic and discover that going deeper into its pages allows them to enter the world itself. Stuart quickly identifies their surroundings from Wayne Tower, Arkham Asylum and the other landmarks around them: they are in Gotham City.

For Stuart, this is finally a crisis suited to his obsessive knowledge. He declares comic books his “superpower” and reasons that the best way home is not Batman or Superman, but the Flash.

Why Does Stuart Need the Flash?

Stuart remembers that the Flash has access to the Cosmic Treadmill, a device capable of traveling between universes. If they can find the Flash and use the machine, Stuart believes they can escape the comic-book reality and return to their own universe.

The problem is that the group is in Gotham while the Flash is associated with Central City. Stuart’s knowledge tells him they need to travel across the country, turning what sounds like a superhero adventure into the much less glamorous experience of taking a commercial flight and getting stuck during an airline delay.

That apparently pointless sequence matters because the characters are still following the rules of the comic. They may know they are inside a story, but they cannot simply skip ahead to the useful part.

The Adversary Discovers Their Escape Attempt

Outside the comic, Kyle and Trevor make an important mistake. They had apparently been instructed not to sell the comic, but Trevor decides that the warning never specifically said they could not read it.

By opening the comic, they discover that Stuart’s group is no longer trapped on the cover. Trevor can actually follow their journey through the pages and realizes that they are traveling toward Central City.

The Adversary already knows what has happened. Trevor tries to defend himself using the technicality that he was told not to sell the comic rather than not to read it, but the Adversary responds by striking him with some kind of energy. Trevor is heard groaning afterward, although the episode never explicitly confirms that he is dead.

The Adversary then summons Mr. Freeze and gives him instructions. That reveal explains the major attack that follows: Mr. Freeze is not randomly appearing in the story. He has effectively been sent into the comic to stop Stuart.

Does Gary Die in Episode 9?

Yes, Gary appears to die again during the confrontation with Mr. Freeze. The group finds him down during the chaos, prompting the deliberately casual observation that Gary “sure does die a lot.”

The moment is treated as a recurring gag rather than a major emotional death scene. It also immediately alerts the others that something dangerous has entered their comic-book storyline.

Mr. Freeze arrives looking specifically for Stuart Bloom. When Stuart is not immediately available, the situation escalates until the Flash intervenes.

The Flash Saves Stuart From Mr. Freeze

The biggest superhero turn comes when a version of the Flash appears and confronts Mr. Freeze. Stuart initially realizes that this is not the modern Barry Allen version he expected but the Golden Age Flash, Jay Garrick, creating further confusion about exactly which comic continuity they have entered.

The battle briefly goes badly when Mr. Freeze traps the Flash in ice. Jay’s speed ultimately proves more powerful, however, and Mr. Freeze is sent flying into space through a tornado-like attack.

That lack of precision becomes extremely important to the ending. There is no exact address for their home universe and no mechanism shown for automatically identifying the correct reality.

Before they can leave, Mr. Freeze returns for another attempt at Stuart. Jay activates the Cosmic Treadmill in time, and the group begins moving through different realities before finally choosing one that appears suitable.

Episode 9 Ending Explained: Did Stuart Make It Back Home?

At first, it looks like the escape has worked. Jay leaves after completing the trip, and Stuart’s group encounters Kyle, who is alarmed to see them back.

Kyle’s reaction also reveals another consequence of the Adversary discovering the comic. He explains that the Adversary will be furious when he realizes they have escaped, and Kyle admits that he already blamed Trevor for what happened.

The group initially plans to leave immediately rather than remain anywhere near the Adversary. Then they look at their surroundings and realize something is very wrong.

Someone finally states the problem directly: “This is not Pasadena.”

That is the episode’s final twist. Stuart successfully uses the Cosmic Treadmill to escape the comic-book universe, but he still fails to return everyone to the correct home reality.

Where Are Stuart and the Others at the End?

Episode 9 deliberately does not reveal where they have landed. The eerie environment, strange sounds and Stuart’s realization that the place is not Pasadena are all the information the episode provides before cutting away.

The most likely explanation is that they released the Cosmic Treadmill in the wrong universe. Jay’s instructions required them to recognize their own reality while rapidly moving between universes, so choosing an almost-correct universe would be easy.

There is also another possibility. Because Kyle exists in this location and recognizes them, they may have reached a reality connected very closely to their own, only to discover that Pasadena has been dramatically altered. The episode does not confirm whether they are in a completely different universe or an altered version of their home world, so that question is clearly being saved for what follows.

Does Trevor Die?

Trevor’s fate remains unresolved rather than confirmed. The Adversary attacks him after discovering that he read the forbidden comic, and Trevor is heard groaning as the energy hits him, but there is no clear statement or scene establishing his death.

The ending makes the uncertainty even more interesting. Kyle says he already “threw Trevor under the bus” when the Adversary needed someone to blame, but he never says Trevor is dead. Unless a later episode confirms otherwise, Trevor should therefore be considered missing or in danger rather than definitively dead.

Gary is the clearer death in Episode 9, although even his fate is complicated by the show’s running joke that he repeatedly dies. Mr. Freeze survives his battle with the Flash, Jay Garrick survives, and Stuart’s group all make it through the Cosmic Treadmill journey.
