The train’s normal braking system is no longer usable, which leaves the pair with no conventional way to stop before reaching the station in Celebration, Florida. Donna Dusk continues helping remotely, while President Judy Gagwell boards the train and assists Tess and DeeDee during their final attempt to bring it under control.

Their solution is wonderfully appropriate for the movie’s deliberately absurd logic. They shut down the engine and eject it from underneath the train, allowing the detached engine to act like a heavy anchor. The resistance slows the remaining carriages enough for the Glamazonian Express to avoid a disastrous arrival at the station. The plan works even as the train continues through the last section of the Stormaganza, where extreme weather causes yet more problems inside the cabin.

Tess and DeeDee therefore really are the central heroes of the ending. When they finally arrive in Florida, reporters credit them with saving the passengers and others who would have been endangered by the runaway train.

Why Do Tess and DeeDee Fall Out?

Yes. Cal survives. The movie intentionally makes his fate look much worse at first. With the train unable to stop, Cal goes outside to reach an emergency brake located on the exterior. Who Is Donna Dusk and Why Is She Important to the Ending?

Donna Dusk, played by Rachel Bloom, is one of the movie’s most important supporting characters despite spending much of the story away from the actual train. She is the control-room employee who first recognizes how dangerous the Stormaganza is. Donna repeatedly attempts to warn the Glamazonian Express and eventually becomes the person guiding those aboard through the crisis. When the brakes fail, she provides the technical information Tess, DeeDee and Cal need to continue operating the train.

Ironically, Donna is fired when her bosses need someone to blame for the situation. That sends her to the same bar as Gagwell, producing the unlikely partnership that changes the ending. During the finale, Donna returns to the command center and guides Tess and DeeDee through the last stages of the Stormaganza. In that sense, saving the train is a group effort: Tess and DeeDee physically carry out the plan, Gagwell helps aboard the train, and Donna provides the information they need from control.

What Happens to Amber?

Amber spends much of the movie representing everything Tess thinks she wants from the Glamazonian Express. Tess initially admires the first-class attendants and begins distancing herself from DeeDee as she receives their approval. Amber later exposes Tess and DeeDee’s Stank Rail background, humiliating them in front of the passengers and making it clear that they will never truly be accepted into her group.

By the ending, however, Amber’s opinion no longer matters to Tess. After reconciling with DeeDee, Tess realizes that gaining access to first class was never worth sacrificing her closest friendship. President Gagwell even steps in when Amber continues criticizing the pair, making the movie’s reversal complete: the supposedly unimpressive Stank Rail attendants become the people everyone depends upon.

The Glamazonian Express is really the exaggerated backdrop for a friendship story. Tess spends much of the movie believing that she and DeeDee are waiting for their lives to begin. Glamazonian seems like the opportunity that will finally transform them into the people they imagined becoming. Her mistake is assuming that becoming successful requires moving beyond her old life and, eventually, beyond DeeDee.
