What Is the Rat King in Resident Evil (2026)? Is the Creature From the Games?

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil does not rely only on familiar zombies or established bosses from Capcom’s games. The 2026 movie introduces several new mutations as Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, makes his way toward Raccoon City General Hospital, but one creature in particular has quickly become a talking point among viewers: the enormous mass that repeatedly pursues him and has been widely described as the “Rat King.”

That nickname has also created some confusion. Is the creature taken from a Resident Evil game? Is it supposed to be Nyx? Or is the movie deliberately referencing the Rat King from The Last of Us Part II? The answer is slightly more complicated because Cregger appears to be combining familiar Resident Evil ideas with monsters created specifically for his movie. Spoilers for Resident Evil (2026) follow.

What Is the Rat King Creature in Resident Evil?

The so-called Rat King is one of the movie’s major recurring mutated creatures. As Bryan travels deeper into the outbreak, he encounters infected life forms that do not remain separate for long. They can combine into larger masses, and eventually a swarm of infected rat-like creatures forms the enormous amalgamation that follows Bryan toward Raccoon City.

The movie itself does not clearly establish “Rat King” as the creature’s official scientific name or identify it as a previously known Bio-Organic Weapon. Instead, the label has become a convenient way for viewers and entertainment coverage to distinguish the creature from the movie’s other mutations. Looper, for example, refers to the pursuing amalgamation as the rat king while describing Bryan’s journey through the sewers and hospital.

The creature also fits something Cregger teased before the movie’s release. He described one of his favorite monsters as a “big baddie” that evolves and changes while following Bryan through the story, while specifically making clear that it was not Nemesis.

Is the Rat King From the Resident Evil Games?

No established Resident Evil game enemy directly matches the Rat King seen in the 2026 movie.

That appears to be intentional. Cregger said during production that the filmmakers wanted to create original monsters rather than simply recycle everything fans had already seen in the games. Speaking about creature designer Shane Mahan’s work, Cregger explained that they wanted to invent new creations that still felt as though they belonged in the world of the T-virus and Resident Evil.

That distinction is important. The new movie exists alongside recognizable Resident Evil concepts such as Umbrella, Raccoon City and the outbreak, but it tells an original story rather than directly adapting Resident Evil 2. Cregger has described Bryan’s story as taking place on the periphery of the familiar Raccoon City events.

The monster therefore seems to be a new movie creation built using the biological rules and visual language of the games rather than a live-action version of one specific boss.

Is the Resident Evil Rat King From The Last of Us?

This is probably the comparison most viewers will make. The Last of Us Part II also features a creature commonly called the Rat King, an enormous infected mass encountered in a hospital. The visual similarity is difficult to miss, especially because Resident Evil also sends Bryan through a hospital while a large fused creature pursues him.

Viewers started making that comparison almost immediately after seeing the movie. One discussion specifically asked whether the film’s main creature was intended as an homage to The Last of Us Part II, while other fans have pointed to the combination of multiple infected forms as the reason the resemblance stands out.

There is currently no confirmation that the Resident Evil creature is officially based on The Last of Us Rat King, however. Cregger and the production team have instead discussed pulling creature ideas from across the Resident Evil games and from real biological references. Production designer Tom Hammock has said that elements such as tentacles and other anatomical features from games including Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 6 helped shape the movie’s creature language.

The similarity is therefore real enough to explain the audience reaction, but calling it a direct Last of Us reference would go beyond what the filmmakers have confirmed.

Is the Rat King Actually Nyx?

This is where two different creatures from the movie are being mixed together.

The Rat King pursuing Bryan is not clearly identified as Nyx. The stronger Nyx comparison concerns what happens to Bryan himself near the end of the movie.

Nyx is an Umbrella-created creature from Resident Evil Outbreak File #2. Its defining ability is absorbing other life forms into its body, allowing the creature to increase its size and strength. The game version even incorporates a Tyrant into itself.

Bryan’s final transformed form shares several characteristics with Nyx, including the ability to incorporate other bodies and the presence of a large eye-like weak point. GamesRadar has consequently suggested that Bryan’s transformation may be a deep-cut visual reference to Nyx, although the movie never officially names him as that creature.

Other analysis has reached an even more cautious conclusion, arguing that Bryan becomes an entirely new monster influenced by the wider Resident Evil bestiary rather than literally becoming Nyx.

So there are really two separate questions: the Rat King is the large pursuing amalgamation encountered before the finale, while the Nyx comparisons primarily concern Bryan’s own final mutation.

What Happens to the Rat King?

The creature continues following Bryan after he reaches Raccoon City General. His final encounter with it comes around the damaged skybridge leading toward the upper floors of the hospital.

Bryan manages to use the surrounding infected against the larger creature. The resulting collision sends the Rat King falling toward the ground below, finally allowing him to continue toward the Umbrella laboratory and complete his delivery.

The movie does not devote additional time to confirming the creature’s permanent destruction. Given the unusual resilience of the outbreak’s mutations, the safest interpretation is simply that Bryan removes it from his path rather than receiving an explicit confirmation that it can never return.

The Rat King Shows How This Resident Evil Movie Uses the Games

The Rat King may look familiar because it carries pieces of several recognizable horror and Resident Evil ideas, but it is not simply another game boss transferred to the screen.

Cregger’s approach is different. The movie borrows the franchise’s biological mutations, Umbrella experiments, Raccoon City setting and escalating monster encounters while creating new characters and creatures around them. That is why the Rat King can remind viewers of The Last of Us, Nyx and other Resident Evil monsters without officially being any of them.

For now, the clearest answer is that the Rat King is an original mutated creature created for Resident Evil (2026), not a confirmed monster from the games. The Nyx connection is more relevant to Bryan’s transformation in the finale, while comparisons with The Last of Us Part II remain an understandable fan interpretation rather than a confirmed crossover or homage.
