Small Prophets Filming Locations: The Real Shops and Streets Behind Its Manchester Magic
From a Stockport hardware store to a Flixton pub, Mackenzie Crook's comedy builds its magical world out of recognizably ordinary places.

A hardware store, a cafe and a suburban pub give Small Prophets its everyday geography. The extraordinary part happens in a shed. Mackenzie Crook’s comedy was filmed in Greater Manchester, where its story is also set, but the jar-filled room at the heart of Michael Sleep’s adventure required a carefully controlled studio setup.
For viewers in the United States, Canada and Australia, Apple TV’s October 7, 2026 release brings the first season to a new audience. It is the same six-part series that debuted on the BBC earlier in the year. Apple’s UK arrival is scheduled for 2027, so the October date should not be mistaken for a new British season.
Toolbox is a real Stockport hardware-store exterior
The fictional Toolbox shop uses Wickes on Manchester Road in Stockport for its exterior, according to The Tab’s location report. This is the workplace shared by Michael and Kacey, with Crook playing their manager, Gordon.
The retailer’s own store page gives the address as 4 Manchester Road, Stockport, SK4 1TN. It is a working DIY store with kitchen and bathroom displays, rather than a permanent television attraction. Visit during normal store hours and keep entrances clear.
The shop’s role is a good example of how lightly the series needs to alter its surroundings. Its world already has the practical, slightly unglamorous business of buying tools and getting through a shift. The fantasy arrives inside that routine rather than replacing it with a different universe.
Pickles Diner was Covent Garden Cafe
Lower Hillgate in Stockport supplies another transformed business. Covent Garden Cafe became Pickles Diner for scenes featuring Paul Kaye and Kathryn Drysdale.
The Garricks Head hosted the pub scenes
The Garricks Head on Moorside Road in Flixton was used inside and out. Local location reporting says it closed for two days and received a temporary makeover. Shops along Flixton Road and parts of the Urmston Riverside Circular Walk also appear among the series’ surroundings.
The pub’s own listing confirms Moorside Road and the postcode M41 5SH. It currently advertises afternoon and evening opening, with different closing times across the week. Check its current schedule before making a special trip; a screen appearance does not guarantee access to a particular table or room.
Stockport and the Flixton/Urmston area work best as separate clusters when planning an outing. Avoid treating every scene change as a short walk between neighboring addresses. For a short outing, choose one area and leave the other for a separate day.

The shed was built for the cameras
The most revealing production detail comes from animators Ainslie Henderson and Will Anderson. In an interview with It’s Nice That, they explained that early tests were made in Crook’s own writing shed. Michael’s screen shed closely reflects that environment, but the series’ shed scenes were filmed in a studio-built version with controllable lighting.

The actors performed to empty jars. The team photographed jars with clear water and with darkened water, then combined those images with separately filmed stop-motion puppets. Camera-reference markers helped match the live-action view to the animation. Digital effects contributed to the finished images, so describing the creatures as either entirely physical or entirely computer-generated would miss the mixed technique.
Manchester supplied more than the streets
Space Studios Manchester lists Small Prophets among its productions. The facility’s public credit establishes a studio connection, though it does not identify an individual stage or assign a particular scene to one. The credited facility has not been linked publicly to the shed set.
Michael Palin’s own production diary provides another glimpse of the process. He traveled to Manchester for a read-through in May 2025, entering a modern room named for Victoria Wood and meeting Pearce Quigley, who plays his son. Palin recalled the scripts and cast fitting together immediately, and described Crook’s calm approach during filming.
The diary places the actors’ work in the region months before the finished series aired. It also explains something the location photographs cannot show: the gentle pace on screen came out of a production Palin remembered as unusually harmonious.
What can you visit?
Plan around the actual businesses and their current arrangements. Buy a drink or a meal where appropriate, and ask before photographing people inside. A few unhurried stops will be more useful than trying to reproduce Michael’s entire route.
The house and garden belong to a different category. Residential filming does not turn a home into a public set. Stick to the named public businesses rather than making a doorstep tour of the neighborhood.
Questions viewers are asking
Was Small Prophets filmed where it is set? Yes. Apple places both the story and its production in Manchester.
Is the October Apple release a second season? No. Apple’s announcement concerns season one. The location details here refer to that first production.
Do the businesses offer screen tours? Their listings describe normal trading. Treat a visit as a cafe or pub stop, rather than assuming staff provide organized access to filming spaces.
