Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 2, titled “Daddy Issues,” begins connecting mysteries that initially appeared separate. Frank Harkness’ return is no longer simply an unwanted intrusion into River Cartwright’s life, while the deaths of former Slow Horses are clearly part of an organized operation. More importantly, Jackson Lamb finally discovers why someone can identify people connected to Slough House even after the unit was erased from MI5’s digital records.

The episode also reveals a new player behind the conspiracy. A wealthy media owner named Damien has employed Frank for a secret job involving a stolen MI5 file, while Peter Judd uses his own connection to Damien to pressure Diana Taverner. By the ending, Lamb has ordered every Slow Horse to disappear, but River ignores the warning and walks straight into another confrontation with his father.

Andrew Nesmith Stole a Secret File From MI5

Episode 2 opens with a man who has recently been fired from the Park receiving a visitor at his home. The man is Andrew Nesmith, a former Dog who admits that he lost his job after stealing a sensitive paper file for the people who hired him.

Andrew says MI5 does not even know the file itself is missing. He was merely caught somewhere he was not supposed to be, meaning the Park knows he broke security rules without realizing the real reason he was there.

Having lost his career, Andrew now wants more money. He threatens to reveal who commissioned the theft unless he receives compensation, effectively trying to blackmail the people who employed him. The woman meeting him makes clear that the man behind the operation does not intend to be pressured, and Andrew is silenced before he can expose what happened.

This immediately introduces an important question: what was inside the stolen file that made it valuable enough for someone to recruit a Dog to take it from MI5?

Lamb Connects Frank to the Dead Slow Horses

At Slough House, River wants to concentrate entirely on Frank after his father’s unexpected appearance at David Cartwright’s funeral. Roddy tracks the rental car Frank used, while Lamb reminds River that they have another problem: Struan Loy and Kay White are both dead.

Lamb still does not know whether Frank is connected to those deaths, but the coincidence is becoming harder to dismiss. He sends Shirley and JK Coe to investigate Kay’s supposedly accidental death while River and Roddy start tracking Frank’s movements.

Frank’s car eventually leads River and Lamb to Andrew Nesmith’s home. Inside, they discover Andrew dead, with the scene apparently arranged to suggest that his death was self-inflicted or the result of an accident.

Lamb immediately senses that something does not fit. Andrew’s cash, cards, phone and computer are all missing, which resembles a robbery, but River points out that theft for money does not fit Frank Harkness’ usual methods.

The possibility that Frank was looking for information begins to make considerably more sense.

Reece Nesmith Saw Something at His Father’s Home

River notices a security camera on a nearby building and obtains footage from around Andrew’s home. The video shows a child in the area, and Roddy later identifies him as Andrew’s son, Reece Nesmith.

Reece did not live permanently with his father and has been moved between children’s homes. His presence near Andrew’s house matters because he may have witnessed something connected to his father’s death or the people who came looking for him.

Frank later confirms to Damien that there was a “third party” complication during the operation. That third party is a minor, strongly indicating that Reece is the witness Frank is talking about.

Frank does not know how much the boy saw or whether he knows about the stolen file. Even so, he regards Reece as a loose end, making the child another person in immediate danger.

Kay White’s Death Was Not an Accident

Shirley and Coe investigate the boat where Kay White had been living. Their visit initially produces little evidence, but someone working nearby eventually tells them that he saw two people leaving Kay’s boat on the night she died.

He describes a man and a woman, confirming Lamb’s suspicion that Kay’s death was not simply an accident. The pair are almost certainly the same two operatives moving through the list of people connected to Slough House.

That revelation is crucial because Struan Loy and Kay were both former Slow Horses. The killings therefore have a clear pattern, even if Lamb still does not know why someone wants the old Slough House roster removed.

Meanwhile, the same pair continue their operation by approaching Moira Tregorian. Pretending to investigate a gas leak, they gain access to her home and incapacitate her before filling the property with gas.

Moira had previously worked at Slough House and had just helped Catherine investigate why the department disappeared from MI5’s computer systems. Her selection reinforces the idea that the killers are working through people whose names appeared on a specific Slough House list.

Peter Judd Introduces Diana to Damien

Diana Taverner has her own problem. Peter Judd arranges a meeting and reminds her that although she now holds the most powerful position at MI5, he still has leverage over her.

Judd then introduces Diana to Damien, the wealthy owner of a relatively new television news channel. Damien is also revealed to be the mysterious benefactor whose money Judd previously gave to the Park.

Judd wants Diana to appear for a television interview on Damien’s channel. She initially has no interest in becoming a media personality, but Judd makes it clear that Damien’s financial connection gives them enough leverage to force her cooperation.

The interview quickly becomes uncomfortable. Diana is pressed about Britain’s response to nerve-agent incidents and accidentally uses the word “retaliation,” allowing the presenter to suggest that MI5 may have secretly responded against those responsible. She is also asked about rumors that a former First Desk had been working for a foreign power, a question uncomfortably close to the truth about Charles Partner.

Diana manages to avoid giving a direct answer, but the interview demonstrates that Damien has access to information that should not be circulating inside a television studio.

Damien Hired Frank Harkness

Episode 2’s biggest reveal comes when Frank meets Damien privately after the television appearance. Their conversation confirms that Damien is not simply Peter Judd’s wealthy political ally. Damien recently contracted Frank to carry out a job.

Frank tells him the job has been completed but explains that there was a complication involving a young witness. Damien specifically asks whether the witness knows about the stolen file, confirming that the theft Andrew Nesmith carried out was part of the same operation.

The structure of the conspiracy now becomes much clearer. Andrew stole the paper file from MI5 for Damien’s operation and was then removed when he tried to demand additional money. Frank is working for Damien and handling the consequences, while Reece has become a problem because he may have seen something he was never supposed to see.

What remains unclear is how much Damien knows about the murders of the former Slow Horses and what he ultimately wants from the stolen information.

Catherine Standish Nearly Relapses

Away from the central conspiracy, Catherine faces a quieter crisis of her own. She enters a wine shop and spends time discussing different bottles before choosing a Margaux, a wine that reminds her of Charles Partner.

The moment carries extra weight because Catherine is a recovering alcoholic and Charles remains deeply tied to both her addiction and her complicated history with MI5. She buys the bottle and a corkscrew, bringing herself dangerously close to drinking again.

When Lamb later finds her, Catherine insists that she has not had any alcohol. He believes her, although his version of concern remains characteristically brutal. Rather than offering comfort, he tells her that whether she drinks is ultimately her decision and orders her into the car because the team is in danger.

Why Did Someone Steal the Slough House File?

Lamb visits the Park looking for the physical personnel files belonging to Struan and Kay. The digital records disappeared when Slough House was erased from MI5’s systems, so the old paper records should provide another route to discovering what connects the victims. Instead, Lamb discovers that the paper files are gone as well.

Not just Struan’s and Kay’s files. Every Slough House file has disappeared.

That finally explains how the assassins can continue identifying targets despite the digital purge. Someone stole the physical file containing the names and information associated with Slough House, and Andrew Nesmith was the person recruited to take it.

The digital deletion and the paper theft may also explain why the killers need an old-fashioned list in the first place. Once Slough House disappeared from MI5’s computers, the physical records became the easiest way to identify everyone who had worked there.

Lamb now understands enough to know that his people cannot remain exposed. He activates “Blake’s grave,” orders the team to abandon Slough House and tells everyone to switch off their phones and go dark.

Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 2 Ending Explained: Why Is Frank at David Cartwright’s House?

River refuses to follow Lamb’s instructions because his attention remains fixed on Frank. Throughout the episode, River receives strange calls consisting mostly of silence or white noise, and he becomes convinced that his father is deliberately playing with him.

Roddy eventually manages to trace one of those calls. The result is far more personal than River expects: Frank is calling him from inside David Cartwright’s house.

River immediately heads there despite the order to go dark. Lamb learns what he has done and sends Coe after him, but River reaches the house first.

He enters and calls for Frank, moving through the empty rooms until his father finally appears and calmly greets him with, “Hello, River.”

The episode ends before Frank explains why he has chosen David’s house for the meeting. However, the location is clearly deliberate. David has just died, River is still grieving, and the house represents the part of River’s family history that Frank has always threatened to contaminate.

More importantly, Episode 2 has now confirmed that Frank is directly involved in Damien’s secret operation. He knows about the stolen file, he is dealing with Reece as a witness, and Lamb believes he has a new team working with him.

That does not necessarily mean Frank intends to kill River. If murder were his only goal, repeatedly calling River and deliberately allowing the calls to be traced would be an unnecessarily complicated way to reach him. Frank appears to want River to find him, making the final scene look more like a planned confrontation than an ambush.

Why Are the Slow Horses Being Targeted?

Episode 2 gives a much clearer answer to how the targets are being found, but not yet why Damien wants them.

Andrew stole a paper file containing information about Slough House, and the assassins appear to be using that information to work through people connected to the department. Struan and Kay have already been eliminated, Moira is targeted at home, and Lamb realizes the current Horses could be next.

Damien’s involvement also suggests that this is more than a personal vendetta by Frank. Frank is a contractor in the operation rather than its ultimate architect, which means River’s father may be dangerous without being the person who started the entire campaign.

By the end of “Daddy Issues,” Lamb has therefore solved one part of the mystery. Someone deliberately obtained the names of the Slow Horses and is systematically using them. What he still needs to discover is why Damien wanted that file in the first place – and what Frank intends to tell River now that he has successfully lured his son back to David Cartwright’s house.
