“Reasonable Doubt” Season 4 does not give Jax Stewart much time to enjoy being home. Episode 2, “Excuse Me Miss,” turns her recovery into another argument about control as Jax decides that returning to work is the best proof that she is moving forward. The problem is that her body, her family and her firm are all telling a more complicated story.
Emayatzy Corinealdi’s Jax spends the episode rebuilding relationships with clients while quietly confronting how unstable The Stewart Firm has become during her absence. Meanwhile, the conflict between Eric and Brooke Cropper moves from a business dispute into something far more ominous, producing the premiere batch’s first major mystery.

Jax goes back to work earlier than planned
Jax is finally home with Lewis, Naima and Spenser, but recovery is already testing her patience. She is still dealing with significant pain, and Lewis reminds her that the doctors recommended a longer healing period.
Jax sees staying home differently. After attending church with her family, she announces that she is returning to the office on Monday, whether everyone around her thinks she is ready or not.
Her arrival at The Stewart Firm is triumphant on the surface. Krystal, Daniel and Corey are delighted to see her, and Jax immediately wants updates on clients, finances and every problem that developed while she was away. Then she learns Corey let Eric Cropper go.
Jax takes Eric back from another law firm
Corey admits that Eric did not simply walk away. Corey chose not to represent him because he believed Eric could become a liability for the new practice.
Jax is furious because Eric has been her client for more than 10 years and represents exactly the kind of major business relationship the firm cannot afford to lose. She goes directly to Eric and discovers that he has hired Gorelick & Sterne.

Instead of making an emotional appeal, Jax reminds him why he trusted her in the first place. A damaging private video involving Eric and Brooke has already reached social media, and his new lawyers have failed to control the fallout.
Jax works out that Brooke likely arranged for the footage to surface as part of their increasingly hostile negotiations. By the end of the meeting, Eric agrees to dismiss his replacement attorneys and return to The Stewart Firm.
For Jax, it is the professional victory she desperately needs. For Corey, it confirms that he and Jax still have very different ideas about which clients are worth keeping.
Eric and Brooke’s divorce becomes a business war
Brooke’s attorney challenges Eric’s decision to remove her from the company and argues that Brooke played a meaningful role in building the business. Eric wants the disagreement reduced to a buyout. Brooke is clearly thinking much bigger.
Jax believes Brooke leaked the embarrassing video to gain leverage, and Brooke does little to hide how much information she has collected about Eric over the years. She warns that there are other things she could reveal if he continues trying to force her out cheaply.
That changes the nature of the dispute. This is no longer simply a couple fighting over shares in Aura. Brooke knows enough about Eric’s operations to potentially threaten the larger empire he has spent years constructing.
The Stewart Firm is closer to financial trouble than Jax knows
Jax’s biggest shock does not come from Eric. Krystal admits that the firm’s finances are worse than she initially reported. Krystal has been juggling her job, law school and the responsibilities created by Jax’s absence. She discovers that insurance costs and penalties have eaten into their reserves, leaving the firm frighteningly close to being unable to meet its obligations.
Jax initially responds with frustration, and Krystal pushes back. She reminds Jax that everyone around her has been carrying extra weight since the Season 3 finale, often while dealing with their own fear and exhaustion.
The exchange cuts through Jax’s comeback mentality. She wants the office to operate as though she has simply returned from a long vacation, but nothing about the previous weeks has been normal.
Jax realizes she is not as healed as she claims
That becomes even clearer away from the office. Regina Harris asks Jax to consider testifying against Monica, believing Jax’s account could have a powerful impact in court. Jax refuses and insists she does not need to face Monica to prove anything. She visits Monica anyway.
Their meeting turns ugly when Monica brings up Ozzie and deliberately targets the guilt Jax has been trying to suppress. Jax leaves angry, but a later moment at home exposes how deeply the recent experience still affects her.

A sudden loud noise from Lewis’ computer sends Jax into panic. She aggravates her arm and struggles to calm herself, forcing Lewis to help her through the moment.
Jax later admits that she took one of her prescribed pain pills afterward and felt ashamed because she interpreted needing help as weakness. She finally tells Lewis she will use the medication when necessary and agrees to physical therapy and regular counseling.
That is the episode’s real definition of progress. Returning to the office is easy for Jax. Admitting that she still needs recovery is much harder.
Bill finally walks away from his old firm
Bill Sterling is going through his own professional reckoning. His new partnership has given him the status he wanted, but Sally keeps forcing him to confront the kind of lawyer he is becoming by staying there.
Eventually, Bill quits. He also tells Sally that he loves her, marking a significant shift in their relationship. It is a smaller storyline compared with Jax and Eric’s problems, but it positions Bill to become much more important to The Stewart Firm now that he is no longer tied to Jax’s former employers.
Corey chooses to remain in Los Angeles
Corey’s extended stay continues creating tension with Brandy. She comes to Los Angeles expecting time with her fiance and instead discovers that Corey is still consumed by Jax’s business.
Corey eventually gives her the answer she has been waiting for. He wants to marry Brandy, but he also believes helping Jax build the firm matters enough that he needs to remain in Los Angeles longer. Brandy asks the question sitting underneath all of their arguments: is Corey in love with Jax?
Corey says no. His commitment is to what Jax is trying to build, not a secret romantic relationship, although the fact that Brandy needs to ask shows that Corey’s priorities are already putting strain on their engagement.
What happens to Brooke at the end of Episode 2?
The episode closes away from Jax and the office, with Brooke apparently leaving to meet someone. She is alone when another vehicle approaches and unknown people intercept her. Brooke is forcibly taken away before the episode cuts back to Eric reacting to the news.
Nothing in the ending identifies who is responsible or whether the incident is connected to Brooke’s fight with Eric. What the scene does accomplish is an immediate transformation of the Cropper storyline.
Until this moment, Brooke and Eric have been fighting over money, control and secrets. Now Brooke is missing, Eric has an enormous list of enemies, and The Stewart Firm’s most valuable client is about to become the center of a much larger public crisis.
