Hulu’s “Reasonable Doubt” has always been built around Jax Stewart’s belief that almost any problem can be managed with enough nerve, preparation and legal maneuvering. Season 4 opens by stripping her of that control. Episode 1, “Dead or Alive,” begins in the immediate aftermath of the Season 3 finale and spends much of its time with the people forced to keep Jax’s family and newly opened law firm functioning while she remains hospitalized.

The premiere also introduces Eric Cropper, played by Durrell “Tank” Babbs, as the client most likely to determine whether The Stewart Firm survives its vulnerable first months. What initially looks like a story about keeping Jax’s business alive gradually expands into a complicated battle involving Eric’s marriage, Monica Wilson’s case and Lewis Stewart’s struggle to imagine a life in which Jax may not come home.

Jax remains hospitalized as The Stewart Firm loses clients

Jax is placed in a medically induced coma while doctors monitor swelling near her spine and warn Lewis that the recovery could go in very different directions. Lewis practically moves into the hospital, leaving only when necessary to see the children, shower or handle work. His entire life becomes organized around waiting for Jax to show signs of improvement.

At the same time, Krystal and Daniel are trying to protect the firm Jax had barely finished launching. Her former employers are already approaching clients who followed her out, leaving the team with an obvious problem: Jax cannot personally persuade anyone to stay.

Eric Cropper matters more than the others because he has been Jax’s client for more than a decade. He is now a hugely successful R&B artist, record executive and streaming entrepreneur, and losing his business could seriously damage the new firm’s finances and reputation.

That is why Daniel calls Corey Cash for help. Corey leaves Chicago and temporarily puts his own life on hold, including preparations for his upcoming marriage to Brandy, to keep Jax’s practice from collapsing.

Eric Cropper refuses to abandon Jax

Jax’s former firm assumes her hospitalization gives them the perfect opportunity to take Eric. They arrive with an elaborate pitch about the connections, capital and resources they can offer him, only to discover that Eric never intended to leave Jax.

Eric deliberately lets them make their presentation before telling them that their attempt to approach him while Jax is unable to defend her business only confirms why he does not trust them. His loyalty gives The Stewart Firm an important lifeline, although dealing with Eric soon proves more complicated than simply keeping his name on the client list.

Corey learns that Eric’s immediate problem involves his second wife, Brooke Cropper. She has been meeting with divorce lawyers, while Eric wants to buy her shares in Aura, the streaming platform they built together.

There is another detail Brooke does not know. Eric has received acquisition interest that could make Aura extraordinarily valuable, and he wants her shares transferred before she learns what the company may actually be worth.

Corey and Eric immediately clash

Corey understands the strategy Eric wants, but he is uncomfortable with both Eric’s behavior and the way Jax has historically handled him. Eric openly says that what he values about Jax is her willingness to operate in the gray areas when that is what winning requires.

Corey sees things differently. Their meeting becomes increasingly hostile, and Corey ultimately decides The Stewart Firm should not represent Eric while Jax is unavailable. From his perspective, a lucrative client is not necessarily worth the trouble he can create.

That decision is important because Corey is not simply filling Jax’s chair. He is trying to run her practice according to his own professional instincts, and Eric is the first major example of how different those instincts can be.

Brooke learns the truth about Aura’s valuation

Eric’s problems become more serious when Brooke attends a Women in Music event and learns that Aura has reportedly received a $685 million acquisition valuation. She immediately understands why Eric has been pressuring her to accept roughly $2 million for her stake.

Brooke argues that she deserves far more because she helped operate and develop the company while Eric expanded CROP Records. Eric refuses to recognize her contribution on equal terms and responds by removing her from her position at the company.

Brooke does not quietly accept it. She makes clear that she knows a great deal about Eric’s business and personal affairs, setting up a divorce fight that could become much more damaging than Eric expects.

Rosie helps Monica change the legal battle

Monica Wilson remains in custody after the confrontation at Jax’s office, but an unexpected visitor changes her situation. Rosie Edwards, Ozzie’s mother, visits Monica and reveals that she now blames Jax for much of what happened to her family.

Rosie has not forgiven Monica for what she did to Ozzie. However, her anger toward Jax is powerful enough that she is willing to finance a much stronger legal defense for Monica.

That decision brings prominent attorney Seth Edelman into the case. At Monica’s arraignment, he enters a not guilty plea, successfully asks that she be moved out of the general jail population and secures a psychiatric evaluation.

Regina Harris, who is prosecuting the case, immediately recognizes that Monica’s defense has become far more complicated. The case Jax’s family expected to be straightforward now has a well-funded attorney preparing to challenge the prosecution.

Lewis finally admits how angry he is

The emotional center of the premiere belongs to Lewis. He spends days trying to be the dependable husband and father everyone needs, but the pressure eventually catches up with him.

After drinking with Corey, Lewis returns home emotionally exhausted. Shanelle finds him struggling and gets him to admit something he has been avoiding: part of his anger is directed at Jax herself.

Lewis has spent years worrying that Jax’s work puts her too close to unpredictable people and situations. He loves the same fearlessness that makes her successful, yet he is furious that the risks attached to her career have now reached their family.

A memory of Jax deciding to start her own firm makes the situation even harder. Lewis remembers supporting the dream without hesitation, including telling her he would help financially if necessary. The flashback reminds him that the future now hanging in the balance is one they planned together.

Does Jax wake up in Reasonable Doubt Season 4 Episode 1?

Yes. The final sequence begins when Nurse Allie unexpectedly calls Lewis and asks him to return to the hospital. Given everything the doctors have told him, Lewis has no idea whether the call means Jax has improved or taken a turn in the other direction.

When he arrives, however, the nurse tells him that Jax has been moved out of intensive care. Lewis enters her new room and sees that she is conscious. Then Jax quietly says his name.

It is a deliberately simple ending after an episode dominated by uncertainty. Jax survives the immediate crisis and wakes up, but Episode 1 makes clear that waking up is not the same thing as returning to normal. Her physical recovery, Monica’s case, the instability of the firm and Eric Cropper’s escalating personal problems are all waiting for her the moment she tries to reclaim her life.
