Reacher Season 4 Episode 5, “Bridge,” finally puts Anna Merrick’s missing flash drive into the team’s hands, but the files do not provide the clean answer everyone expected. The drive contains a mysterious photograph connecting Congressman John Sampson and General Putra to another unidentified man, while Lila and Amisha survive their plunge from the bridge and immediately continue hunting for it. The episode ends with the balance of power flipped again: Lila has kidnapped Jacob and demands the drive from Reacher. Reacher now knows what Lila is capable of, but he still does not know why one seemingly ordinary photograph is valuable enough to leave so many people dead.

Reacher escapes the hotel, but not the murder accusation

Episode 5 begins with Reacher trapped in the consequences of the previous hour. He reached Lila’s hotel room after she and Amisha had already slaughtered the armed men who attacked them, leaving Reacher surrounded by bodies just as Philadelphia police arrived. There is no realistic way for him to explain that scene quickly enough, so he escapes and begins another stretch of life as a wanted man.

His first useful move is not another fight but a correction to his own theory. Once Tamara Green confirms the evidence pointing toward Lila, Reacher realizes Anna probably never intended to send the flash drive to her. If Anna understood that Lila was responsible for Ben’s kidnapping, she would have sent the evidence to someone she genuinely trusted, which points directly to her brother Jacob.

That deduction finally gives the group a concrete destination. Jacob, Green and Russell Plum head for Jacob’s home to check his mail while Reacher continues trying to stay ahead of the police. For once, the thing everyone has spent half a season searching for is exactly where common sense says Anna might have put it.

Does Reacher really get arrested?

Yes, Reacher is arrested, but keeping him in a cell proves considerably harder than putting him there. His attempt to outrun the Philadelphia police eventually fails, and Detective Docherty has little interest in accepting Reacher’s explanation for the bodies left behind. The murder scene has made Reacher too convenient a suspect for the authorities to ignore.

A familiar threat then makes the situation worse. Foster, one of the government men who has been pursuing Reacher, reaches him while he is locked up and apparently expects confinement to make Reacher easier to handle. Instead, Reacher uses the cell itself as a weapon, dragging Foster into the bars with enough violence to incapacitate him.

Foster’s keys become Reacher’s exit. The sequence does not clear his name, and by the time he leaves the station he is still being treated as a dangerous fugitive. What it does accomplish is getting him back into the investigation before Lila can reach the flash drive first.

Lila and Amisha attack Jacob on the bridge

Jacob finds both Anna’s flash drive and her dead phone, but he barely has time to secure them before Lila and Amisha arrive armed. Their attack turns into the episode’s largest chase, with Green and Plum caught in the middle while Jacob refuses to surrender the evidence connected to his sister’s death. Prime’s own synopsis frames this confrontation as Jacob’s first real opportunity to strike back at the people responsible for what happened to Anna.

Jacob eventually forces Lila and Amisha into a desperate position on the bridge. With police closing in and no clean escape route, the women choose the river rather than arrest and throw themselves over the side. For a brief moment, Green wants to believe the fall solved their problem.

It did not. Information later reaching the group confirms that Lila and Amisha survived the jump, attacked a local man and stole another vehicle. The bridge removes them from the immediate firefight, but it does not remove them from the story.

What is actually on Anna’s flash drive?

The most surprising answer is how little there appears to be. The drive contains a photograph rather than a large cache of documents, and the image shows Sampson and Cahill with General Putra. Another man is visible in the photograph, but the group does not recognize him.

That makes the photograph more intriguing rather than less. Too many people have been killed, kidnapped or chased over Anna’s evidence for an ordinary souvenir to justify the danger surrounding it. Whatever matters about the image is therefore probably connected to the identities of the people in it or to what they were doing together when it was taken.

Reacher contacts Sampson for an explanation. Sampson describes the unidentified man as a scientist who was conducting malaria research, but Episode 5 gives Reacher no independent reason to accept that explanation as complete. The photograph consequently becomes the central mystery going into the final three episodes.

Why does Tomas Waberi matter?

Plum uncovers another detail that may eventually connect the photograph to Lila’s real operation. Lila had almost no visible financial footprint until a platinum American Express account suddenly appeared and paid for travel involving Lila, Amisha and their people. The same source also covered travel for a man named Tomas Waberi from Djibouti.

Episode 5 does not introduce Waberi properly or explain what he does. That makes him different from Lila and Amisha, whose role has become much clearer after the karambit reveal. Waberi is currently a name attached to the same financial trail without a known position in the conspiracy.

It is tempting to immediately identify him with the mystery man in the photograph, but “Bridge” does not confirm that connection. The episode is deliberately holding both pieces apart for now: an unidentified person appears beside Sampson and Putra, while an unexplained man from Djibouti appears in Lila’s travel records.

Anna’s phone leads Reacher back to Ben’s murder

Once Anna’s phone is charged, it provides a different kind of clue. Lila had sent Anna disturbing material connected to Ben, including evidence of his torture and an address that Reacher and Green trace to an abandoned restaurant. The location turns out to be far more important than another meeting place.

It is where Ben was tortured and killed. Reacher studies the blood patterns and damaged restraints and reconstructs enough of the violence to understand what happened there. The discovery removes any remaining ambiguity about how far Lila was willing to go to force Anna into giving up the drive.

It also changes the emotional temperature of the investigation. Reacher began the season trying to understand why a woman died on a subway. By Episode 5, he is standing inside the room where her son was tortured as part of the same conspiracy.

Why does Lila kidnap Jacob at the end?

Lila takes Jacob because he gives her leverage over Reacher and the flash drive. Reacher and Green arrive at the restaurant expecting answers, but Lila and Amisha are already there and have Jacob as their prisoner. Plum is notably not beside him, leaving his immediate whereabouts outside the final confrontation.

The demand is simple: Lila wants the drive. That tells Reacher something important even though he still does not understand the photograph. If the image were genuinely meaningless, Lila would have no reason to survive a shootout, jump from a bridge, steal another vehicle and then take Jacob hostage to recover it.

That makes Jacob’s kidnapping less about him personally than about what he can force Reacher to surrender. For Jacob, however, the situation is painfully personal because Lila is connected to the destruction of his family. Episode 5 ends before he gets the revenge Prime’s synopsis teases as his opportunity, leaving him instead directly in the hands of the woman he wanted to stop.

What does the Episode 5 ending mean?

“Bridge” ends with Reacher understanding the enemy much better while understanding the conspiracy itself only slightly more. Lila is no longer pretending to be an ally, Anna’s drive has finally surfaced, and the photograph clearly matters. Yet the identity of the man in the background and the reason this image threatens Lila’s operation remain unanswered.

That is the real shift in Episode 5. The season no longer needs viewers to ask whether Lila can be trusted. The important questions now are what Anna discovered, who the mystery man in the photograph is, and why Lila is willing to kill almost anyone who gets close to that answer.

Reacher has escaped the police twice and finally reached the evidence everyone wanted. Unfortunately, the episode ends by proving that finding the drive was never going to be the same thing as understanding it.
