Spoiler note: This article covers confessions, deaths, and evidence from all three episodes, including the finale.

Three siblings who grew up taking trips with a man they would later place at Zodiac murder sites are the central new voices in This Is the Zodiac Speaking, Netflix’s three-episode docuseries that premiered October 23, 2024. Directed by Phil Lott and Ari Mark, the series focuses on Arthur Leigh Allen (played by John Carroll Lynch in David Fincher’s 2007 film Zodiac), the only person California law enforcement ever formally named a suspect in the killings, through the testimony of David, Connie, and Don Seawater. The siblings describe a decades-long relationship with Allen and present letters and a knife for forensic examination. The documentary does not solve the case, but it assembles the most personal account yet gathered against Allen, who died in 1992 without ever being charged.

Who Were the Zodiac Killer’s Victims?

Five murders are confirmed as the work of the Zodiac, spanning December 1968 through October 1969. Betty Lou Jensen, 16, and David Arthur Faraday, 17, were shot on Lake Herman Road near Benicia, California on December 20, 1968. Darlene Ferrin, 22, was killed at Blue Rock Springs Park in Vallejo on July 4-5, 1969; her companion Michael Renault Mageau survived that attack. Cecelia Shepard was stabbed to death at Lake Berryessa on September 27, 1969, in an attack that Bryan Hartnell survived. Taxi driver Paul Stine was shot in San Francisco’s Presidio Heights on October 11, 1969. The Zodiac claimed 37 deaths total, but investigators confirmed only five.

Investigators later raised the possibility that Robert Domingos, 18, and Linda Edwards, 17, a high school couple shot at Gaviota beach in Santa Barbara County in June 1963, were earlier victims. Santa Barbara police contacted the SFPD with that theory in 1970. The 1963 attack has never been officially attributed to the Zodiac.

What Did the Zodiac Killer Want?

No confirmed motive was ever established. The perpetrator sent letters and coded ciphers to Bay Area newspapers, taunting police and claiming credit for the killings, but offered no consistent explanation. Documentary commentator Robert Graysmith, whose 1986 book Zodiac formed the basis for Fincher’s film, argues in the series that Allen’s reported resentment of couples and his social isolation may have been factors. That is a reasoned inference, not a documented fact.

Why Was Arthur Leigh Allen Imprisoned?

Allen was arrested on October 1, 1974, and convicted of child molestation. He was committed to Atascadero State Hospital on March 14, 1975, and released on probation in 1977. Zodiac letters to Bay Area newspapers stopped during his incarceration and resumed after his release, a timeline investigators noted but could not act on without physical evidence.

The Seawater connection to Allen predated his arrest by more than a decade. The siblings’ father had been institutionalized at Atascadero for molesting one of his daughters, leaving Phyllis Seawater to raise the children largely alone. Allen, then working as an elementary school teacher, positioned himself as a family friend and took the children on trips. He taught students cipher-based codes using cryptograms, and classmates recall him playing recordings of Gilbert and Sullivan’s opera The Mikado in class. The Zodiac quoted from The Mikado in a letter mailed to the San Francisco Chronicle on July 26, 1970.

What New Evidence Does the Documentary Present?

After Phyllis died on April 23, 2017, the Seawater siblings found a box of letters Allen had sent her over the years. Three excerpts are featured in the series: “Every time someone mentioned police to me I’d jump,” “Seeing a murder headline would turn my palms sweaty,” and “the most dangerous thing is when I almost decided to confess.” Allen had also sent Phyllis a home video he edited himself, splicing personal footage together with television news coverage of the Zodiac case.

The series also revisits a trip Allen took the Seawater children on in June 1963, to Tajiguas Beach near Gaviota. Connie Seawater says Allen left the children in the car, then returned agitated with red material on his hands, around the time Domingos and Edwards were shot nearby. The documentary presents no physical corroboration of this account.

One of Connie’s sons later found a knife, wrapped in plastic, in the trunk of Allen’s car. Allen gave the knife to the boy without explanation. The docuseries reported that the knife had been submitted for forensic testing, with results still pending at the time of its October 2024 release.

On the cipher front, one of four codes attributed to the Zodiac, the Z340, sent to the San Francisco Chronicle in November 1969, was solved in December 2020 by cryptographers David Oranchak, Sam Blake, and Jarl Van Eycke. The FBI confirmed their solution. The decrypted text contained no identification of the author. Two other attributed ciphers remain unsolved.

Did Arthur Leigh Allen Confess?

He gave different answers to different people across his final years. During a sailing trip in 1991, Connie Seawater asked Allen directly whether he was the Zodiac. He replied that if he told her, he would have to kill her as well, a remark she interpreted as a joke at the time. David Seawater says that in a 1992 phone call, as Allen’s health was failing from kidney disease and diabetes, Allen wept and admitted to having drugged the Seawater children during their shared trips, to having molested Connie, and to being the Zodiac. Allen died on August 26, 1992, at age 58.

Allen had denied the murders in multiple media interviews throughout his life. When his body was found, a typewritten note reportedly in his hand again denied any connection to the killings. A sealed letter Allen addressed to law enforcement, which denied any connection to the killings, was released after his death.

DNA analysis of Zodiac letter envelopes, conducted in 2002, proved inconclusive.

Will the Zodiac Case Ever Be Solved?

The case remains officially open. Allen died before charges could be brought, and no forensic evidence has definitively connected or cleared him. What the Seawater siblings’ accounts add is a sustained behavioral record across three decades, not laboratory confirmation. The documentary presents David’s phone call account, the letters, and the knife as a category of evidence distinct from the fingerprint comparisons, handwriting analysis, and DNA testing that all previously failed to produce a match.

Whether the knife forensics return anything usable, and whether those results will be made public, were open questions when the series launched. For the families of the five confirmed victims, the official record has stayed the same: the Zodiac Killer was never identified.
