Spoiler warningThis story discusses major plot details and outcomes.

The last episode of Lovesick appears to force Emilia Sauri into the decision she has spent much of her life avoiding: Daniel Cuenca or Antonio Zavalza. Yet the answer is deliberately more complicated than simply naming a winner. In the main timeline, Emilia chooses the stable life she can build with Zavalza rather than continuing to follow Daniel. Emotionally, however, she never stops loving Daniel.

The final time jump reinforces that distinction instead of resolving it. Lovesick does not clearly identify the elderly man shown with Emilia as either Daniel or Zavalza, while its dreamlike final moments bring Daniel back into her memories. Emilia therefore chooses a way of living, but the series refuses to pretend that choice erases her other great love.

Why Does Emilia Choose Zavalza Over Daniel?

Emilia moves toward Zavalza because life with him allows room for the person she wants to become.

Her problem with Daniel has never been a lack of passion. Quite the opposite. Daniel is tied to some of Emilia’s strongest feelings and oldest memories, and whenever they reunite, that connection immediately returns.

What repeatedly destroys their chance at an ordinary life is Daniel’s inability to stay. The revolution, political action and later his work continue calling him away. Emilia can follow him for a while, and at several points she does, but she eventually understands that loving Daniel means accepting a permanent state of waiting.

Lovesick Ending Explained: Who Does Emilia End Up With, Daniel or Zavalza?

Zavalza offers something fundamentally different. He shares Emilia’s relationship with medicine and understands that becoming a doctor is not a hobby she will abandon once she falls in love. Life with him does not require Emilia to choose between intimacy and her profession.

Her decision is therefore less “Zavalza is the man she loves most” and more “this is the life she can actually live.”

Why Can’t Emilia Simply Stay With Daniel?

Daniel and Emilia want each other, but they do not want the same daily existence.

That difference becomes increasingly difficult to ignore as the story progresses. Daniel experiences the political struggle as something he cannot abandon. Emilia respects much of what drives him, but medicine produces an equally powerful sense of purpose in her.

Following Daniel indefinitely would mean allowing his calling to determine the geography and rhythm of her life.

That is why Emilia finally refusing to follow him is so important. She is not punishing Daniel or pretending their relationship meant nothing. She is establishing a limit that Daniel has repeatedly assumed would never exist. Love can survive that decision. Their relationship cannot survive in the form Daniel expects.

Does Emilia Still Love Daniel at the End?

Yes. Lovesick makes it very difficult to interpret Emilia’s choice of Zavalza as the end of her love for Daniel.

Her final separation from Daniel acknowledges precisely the opposite. Emilia leaves knowing that Daniel will remain emotionally important to her even when she refuses to build her everyday life around him.

That distinction is also central to the source novel. Ángeles Mastretta has said that she originally wanted to write about a woman who could love two men simultaneously. Years after publishing Mal de amores, she explained that ending the story with Emilia simply choosing Zavalza and abandoning Daniel would have betrayed what she wanted the character’s life to represent.

That doesn’t mean the Netflix adaptation requires viewers to treat every detail of the novel as screen canon. It does, however, provide unusually strong context for the ambiguity Catalina Aguilar Mastretta preserves in the adaptation. Emilia’s heart is not structured like a competition in which one relationship has to invalidate the other.

Who Is the Older Man With Emilia in the Final Time Jump?

The series does not clearly identify him, so claiming definitively that he is Daniel or Zavalza goes beyond what the episode establishes.

The epilogue jumps decades into Emilia’s future and shows that she has a family. A younger member of that family identifies the older man in familial terms, but Lovesick does not give viewers the clean reveal they might expect from a conventional romantic finale.

Zavalza is arguably the most natural possibility because Emilia has chosen the life associated with him by the end of the principal timeline. Still, the series leaves enough information unstated that this should remain an interpretation rather than a confirmed fact.

That ambiguity seems intentional because identifying the man would transform the final scene into a scoreboard: Daniel won, or Zavalza won. The ending is trying to say something different.

Why Does Daniel Appear in the Final Scene?

Daniel’s appearance is best understood as memory and emotional symbolism, not proof that he is literally standing beside elderly Emilia.

As Emilia looks back, time seems to collapse. People are restored to younger versions of themselves, and the world is filtered through the period that shaped her most intensely.

Daniel belongs naturally within that memory because he has been part of Emilia’s emotional life since childhood. When he appears again, the sequence is less interested in explaining where he physically ended up than in showing that he never disappeared from Emilia’s inner life.

There is no established supernatural element in Lovesick that would require viewers to interpret the scene as resurrection, time travel or a literal reunion with the dead. Its change in visual language signals that the finale has entered Emilia’s recollection of the people and experiences that made her who she became. The young Daniel appearing there confirms emotional permanence rather than romantic exclusivity.

So Who Does Emilia Really End Up With?

The most accurate answer is Zavalza in the practical sense, Daniel in an emotional sense, and Emilia ultimately on her own terms.

Zavalza represents the relationship in which Emilia can create continuity, practice medicine and stop reorganizing her life around someone else’s departures. Daniel remains the love she cannot reduce to a youthful mistake simply because their lives are incompatible.

That is also why the title Lovesick ultimately fits Emilia better than a conventional “who does she choose?” ending would. Her condition is not cured by replacing Daniel with Zavalza. She learns to live with love in more than one form without allowing either man to determine the boundaries of her future.

For a story about a woman constantly being told what she should sacrifice, that is a far more fitting ending than declaring either Daniel or Zavalza the winner.
