Is Docherty Corrupt in Reacher Season 4? Why He Takes Jacob

Detective Shaun Docherty has spent much of Reacher Season 4 hovering between indifference and outright suspicion. Episode 6 finally pushes that ambiguity into dangerous territory when he takes custody of Jacob Merrick and then does something Jacob immediately recognizes as wrong: he doesn’t take him where a normal arrest should end.

The episode strongly suggests that Docherty has been compromised, but it stops just short of revealing what he ultimately plans to do. More importantly, Docherty appears conflicted, leaving open the possibility that he could still change his mind before crossing a line he cannot undo.

Spoiler Alert

Why Does Jacob Call Uncle Monty?

Jacob turns to Monty after everything falls apart at the hospital. He manages to get the wounded Plum to emergency care, but police identify Jacob before he can safely disappear. With Reacher and Tamara gone and virtually every official agency looking dangerous, Jacob has very few people left whom he believes he can trust.

Monty once worked with Jacob’s father, giving Jacob a personal reason to see him as family rather than another part of the system hunting him.

Unfortunately, Monty does not believe Jacob’s explanation about the CIA, corrupt cops and the larger conspiracy.

Does Uncle Monty Betray Jacob?

Yes, although Monty appears to believe he is protecting Jacob rather than handing him over to be murdered.

Monty has already spoken with Philadelphia police and arrives with officers rather than coming alone. From his perspective, Reacher is the person dragging Jacob deeper into an increasingly violent situation, and getting Jacob into police custody is the safest way to end it. Jacob sees the situation very differently.

He has watched government operatives, police and hired killers repeatedly overlap during the investigation. Being arrested no longer automatically means being protected. That fear becomes much more believable when Docherty arrives.

Why Does Docherty Take Jacob?

Docherty takes control of Jacob after the police pick him up, but the journey does not appear to follow normal procedure. Jacob notices that they have gone past the police station. If Docherty were simply booking him or putting him into protective custody, there would be no obvious reason to continue driving. That realization changes the scene completely.

Jacob understands that Docherty may be taking him somewhere unofficial, and in the world Season 4 has established, unofficial transfers frequently end with inconvenient witnesses disappearing.

Is Docherty Actually Corrupt?

Episode 6 gives us the strongest reason yet to believe Docherty has been compromised. Tamara’s partner has already spent much of the investigation refusing to get involved despite increasingly obvious evidence that something is wrong. His decision to remove Jacob from the normal police process makes his behavior much harder to dismiss as simple laziness or self-preservation.

However, being compromised does not necessarily mean Docherty has become a completely willing killer.

The series deliberately emphasizes his hesitation when Jacob challenges him. Docherty does not behave like someone completely comfortable with what is happening, which is important because the show has repeatedly contrasted Tamara’s stubborn morality with Docherty’s willingness to look away.

Episode 6 may finally be forcing him to decide which kind of cop he actually wants to be.

Why Does Jacob Mention Tamara?

Jacob’s best chance of surviving is not overpowering Docherty. It is getting through to whatever remains of his conscience. That is why Tamara matters.

Docherty knows what happened to Tamara professionally after she refused to ignore wrongdoing. She paid a significant career price for doing what she believed was right, while Docherty chose the easier path of staying out of trouble. Jacob effectively forces him to confront that difference.

Killing another police officer – particularly one caught in the same conspiracy Tamara has risked everything to expose – would move Docherty from passive cowardice into something far worse.

Is Docherty Going to Kill Jacob?

Episode 6 does not answer that question. Jacob realizes he is in danger, and Docherty’s route strongly suggests that the situation is not a legitimate arrest. Yet Docherty’s reaction shows that he has not emotionally committed to whatever has been asked of him. That distinction is probably the entire purpose of the cliffhanger.

If Docherty were simply another villain, there would be little reason to spend time showing his discomfort. The more interesting possibility is that he has taken money, followed orders or otherwise participated in the corruption surrounding the case, but discovers that actually murdering Jacob is a line he cannot cross.

The Episode 7 synopsis confirms Jacob’s story continues, so the car ride will not simply end with Docherty executing him. What remains unknown is whether Jacob escapes, someone intervenes or Docherty himself finally chooses the right side.

Could Docherty Turn Against the Conspiracy?

That is now one of Episode 7’s most interesting possibilities. Reacher and Tamara are both in immediate danger elsewhere, while Jacob is isolated from them. If Docherty decides not to follow through with whatever he has been ordered to do, he could become an unexpected source of help.

He may also know more about the corruption inside Philadelphia law enforcement than Tamara realizes.

That would give his change of heart practical value rather than simply providing him with a redemption moment.

For now, the safest conclusion is that Docherty is compromised, but not completely lost. Episode 6 reveals that he is willing to take Jacob outside normal police procedure, yet it also makes his hesitation impossible to ignore.

His next decision will determine whether Tamara was right to believe there was still a decent cop somewhere underneath all that cynicism.
