Lanterns Episode 5, titled “Lights Out,” looks set to bring the Rushville investigation to its most dangerous point yet. Episode 4 ended with Hal Jordan realizing that Zoe Macon is the Manhunter they have been trying to identify, while John Stewart admitted that he never truly believed she died in the satellite attack. The new preview removes any remaining doubt about her fate. Zoe is alive, and whatever happens next will force John to confront the woman he has grown close to while Hal deals with a town that appears to be descending into chaos.

Zoe’s Manhunter Secret Can No Longer Stay Hidden

The biggest development heading into Episode 5 is Zoe’s return. Her truck was destroyed by an orbital strike in Episode 4, but Hal correctly recognized that John’s strangely restrained reaction meant he suspected she had survived. The preview now shows that Zoe is indeed alive, putting the Manhunter mystery much closer to a direct confrontation.

That does not necessarily mean Zoe will become a straightforward villain. Poorna Jagannathan has described the character as a Manhunter capable of human emotion while still being controlled by programming she cannot always overcome. That distinction should matter especially with John, since their relationship began as part of Zoe’s survival strategy but eventually became more complicated. Episode 5 should finally force John to separate the woman he knows from the artificial being Hal believes they need to stop.

Hal and John’s Partnership Is in Serious Trouble

John and Hal may have finally admitted some of the secrets they were keeping from each other, but Episode 4 does not leave them on good terms. Hal knows John concealed his suspicions about Zoe, while John knows Hal visited Sinestro behind the Guardians’ backs. The ring is also still hanging over everything between them, especially after John had the opportunity to take it and deliberately refused.

The Episode 5 preview suggests that their argument is far from finished. Hal appears to apologize for his actions, while John openly tells him that he is angry and intends to do something about it. Their partnership has survived distrust before, but Zoe creates a different problem because John has a personal connection to the person Hal now considers their target.

What Is Happening in Rushville?

Episode 5 also appears to move the danger beyond Macon’s ranch. The preview includes an emergency broadcast warning Rushville residents that the threat is real, along with gunfire and scenes suggesting that the situation inside the town is rapidly deteriorating.

Antaan and his people remain another major concern. They came to Earth searching for the Manhunter and have already shown how destructive they can be when they believe humans are protecting their target. Now that Hal and John appear to have finally identified Zoe, Episode 5 could bring that conflict directly into Rushville rather than allowing the investigation to continue quietly.

The people living there may not necessarily want the Lanterns’ help either. Macon has already explained that the mysterious being living among them transformed the town, curing illness and improving life for its residents. If Zoe is responsible for those miracles, some of Rushville’s residents may see her as their protector rather than the threat Hal believes she is.

Could Lights Out End the 2016 Story?

There is growing speculation that Episode 5 could serve as the climax of Lanterns’ 2016 storyline before the series returns to the 2026 mystery introduced in the premiere. The available promotional footage has been heavily concentrated around events from the earlier timeline, and the Episode 5 preview looks unusually large in scale for the middle of an eight-episode season. That remains speculation rather than something HBO has confirmed.

What is clear is that “Lights Out” is positioned to resolve several questions that have driven the season so far. Zoe can no longer remain hidden, Hal and John have reached a breaking point, and Rushville itself appears to be under threat. If the episode does close this chapter of the story, its biggest job will be explaining what happens to the Manhunter and how those events eventually connect to Hal Jordan’s death ten years later.

Lanterns Episode 5, “Lights Out,” premieres Sunday, September 13, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.
