Is Neal Leaving Lioness? Will Dave Annable Return in Season 4?

Lioness Season 3 ends with one of its biggest changes happening far away from the CIA’s covert operations. After surviving her kidnapping and continuing the hunt for the people responsible, Joe McNamara finally returns home expecting to face the family she repeatedly left waiting for her. Instead, the house is empty, a “For Sale” sign is outside, and Neal has taken their daughters with him. The scene immediately raises another question beyond the state of their marriage: has Lioness just written Dave Annable’s Neal out of the series?

Is Neal Leaving Lioness?

There is currently no confirmation that Neal is leaving Lioness permanently. The Season 3 finale confirms that Neal leaves Joe and takes Kate and Charlie with him, but that is a development within the story rather than an announced exit for Dave Annable. Neal’s departure follows an entire season in which Joe’s dangerous career increasingly disrupts the family’s ability to live normally. When Joe survives her kidnapping but once again delays coming home so she can finish the mission, Neal finally reaches the point where staying becomes impossible for him.

The ending is deliberately structured as a relationship cliffhanger rather than a farewell scene for Neal. Viewers do not see him disappear from the story through a permanent event, nor has Paramount+ announced that Annable is leaving the cast. What Has Dave Annable Said About Returning in Season 4?

Annable’s comments after the finale are the strongest indication that viewers have probably not seen the last of Neal. Speaking to Us Weekly, the actor said he is “very curious” about what Neal and Joe’s journey could look like in Season 4 if the show receives another season. He also said the events of the finale have left a significant imprint on Neal, particularly after years of supporting Joe through increasingly dangerous situations. His comments are framed around what could happen next rather than treating Season 3 as his final appearance.

However, Annable has not officially confirmed a Season 4 return, and Paramount+ has not yet formally renewed Lioness for a fourth season. As of the Season 3 finale, there is therefore no official Season 4 cast list that guarantees Neal will appear. Annable’s willingness to discuss future story possibilities is encouraging, but it should not be confused with a casting announcement. Paramount will ultimately have to confirm both another season and its returning ensemble.

Why Does Neal Finally Leave Joe?

Neal’s decision is not caused by one argument. Lioness has spent multiple seasons showing him trying to build a stable home while Joe repeatedly disappears into a job she cannot fully explain to either him or their daughters. Season 2 already brought their marriage close to a breaking point when Joe returned to dangerous field work despite the physical and emotional toll it was taking on her. Neal ultimately welcomed her home then, but Season 3 asks him to endure something considerably more frightening.

Joe is taken close to her own home, proving that the danger no longer remains safely separated from the family. After she is rescued, Neal waits for her to return, only for Joe to turn away from the house and continue hunting the people responsible because she fears they could still threaten him and the girls. Joe considers that another attempt to protect them, but Neal experiences it as yet another moment when the mission comes before the family. By the finale, he decides that he can no longer raise their daughters inside that uncertainty.

Does Neal Taking the Girls Mean His Story Is Over?

Quite the opposite, because Neal leaving creates one of the largest unresolved personal stories heading into a possible Season 4. Joe has repeatedly insisted that everything she does is ultimately meant to protect her family, but Season 3 ends with those very choices leaving her alone. Neal now has an opportunity to define what his life looks like when he is no longer simply waiting for Joe to return from another operation. That conflict could remain relevant even if the couple spends part of another season separated.

Annable has also described Neal as someone who would be much happier if Joe accepted a conventional desk position rather than continuing her life in the field. Joe has repeatedly struggled with exactly that possibility, even after injuries, family arguments and now an abduction. Their disagreement is therefore not something that can be solved merely by Neal walking back through the door. Any reconciliation would likely require Joe and Neal to confront whether the life each of them wants is still compatible with the other.

Will Dave Annable Be in Lioness Season 4?

For now, the safest answer is that Dave Annable has not been announced as leaving Lioness, but his Season 4 return has also not been officially confirmed. His post-finale interview strongly suggests that he remains interested in continuing Neal’s story, and he openly discussed what Joe and Neal could face if another season happens. That is very different from an actor giving a farewell interview after completing a character’s story.

Neal also remains essential to one of Joe’s biggest unfinished storylines. The Season 3 ending does not resolve their marriage, and it leaves Joe staring directly at the personal consequences of her career for perhaps the first time without Neal waiting at home to absorb them. If Lioness Season 4 moves forward, that makes Neal’s absence from Joe’s house a beginning rather than necessarily an ending. Until Paramount announces the next season and its cast, however, his official status remains open.
