Lioness Season 3 spends weeks sending Joe McNamara and the CIA in different directions as they try to understand who arranged her kidnapping. Current cast information for The Unraveling credits Nur as Aaliyah, marking her return after being absent throughout Seasons 2 and most of Season 3. Her appearance would also explain why the finale deliberately waits until the end to reveal the person funding the operation instead of introducing another completely new antagonist.

Aaliyah was at the center of the show’s original Lioness mission. Cruz Manuelos became close to her as part of an undercover operation designed to reach her father, Asmar Ali Amrohi, a wealthy businessman accused by the CIA of financing extremist networks. Cruz’s cover eventually collapsed during Aaliyah’s wedding, resulting in the deaths of both Asmar and Aaliyah’s fiance, Ehsan. Cruz escaped with Joe’s team, leaving Aaliyah behind to discover that the woman she trusted had been part of the operation that destroyed her family.

Why Would Aaliyah Want Revenge on Joe?

Joe did not personally carry out the Season 1 mission’s final act, but she was the CIA officer who recruited, trained and controlled Cruz throughout the operation. It is convincing enough for the CIA to treat Oleksa as an unacceptable risk, but the information Joe later receives from Yurimov and Alex undermines that conclusion.

Russian and Belarusian contractors create one trail, Iranian-linked operatives create another, and Oleksa’s history gives the CIA a politically logical suspect. What Does Aaliyah’s Return Mean for Lioness Season 4?

Aaliyah potentially returning as the force behind the Season 3 conspiracy would bring Lioness back to the consequences of its very first mission. Season 1 ended with Cruz questioning whether eliminating Asmar had actually made the world safer, warning that the operation could create another generation of enemies. Aaliyah becoming a future adversary would give that argument a very literal payoff.
