Will There Be Lioness Season 4? Renewal Status, Cast and What We Know

Lioness Season 3 has pushed Joe McNamara closer to the edge than either of the show’s previous seasons, turning a foreign-intelligence investigation into an operation that reaches directly into her home, marriage and physical survival. With The Unraveling bringing the eight-episode season to its conclusion on September 20, attention is naturally shifting toward what Taylor Sheridan intends to do with Joe, Cruz and the Lioness team next. Paramount+ has remained noticeably quiet about the show’s future even as cast members and behind-the-scenes developments have provided unusually strong hints that the story is not finished. The question surrounding Season 4 is therefore less about whether there is material for another mission and more about when Paramount will formally reveal its plans.

Has Lioness Been Renewed for Season 4?

As of September 20, 2026, Paramount+ has not officially announced Lioness Season 4. The current Paramount Press Express releases still stop with Season 3, and the streamer has not issued a renewal statement comparable to the announcements it previously made for Seasons 2 and 3. TV Insider also confirmed on September 18 that no formal fourth-season order had been announced before the Season 3 finale. That means websites describing Season 4 as officially renewed are currently going further than Paramount itself has gone.

The lack of an announcement is not necessarily unusual for Lioness. Paramount waited until May 2024 to formally renew the series for Season 2, while Season 3 was not officially announced until October 1, 2025. The franchise has therefore already established a pattern in which the next season is not confirmed immediately after the previous finale.

Why Does Season 4 Still Look Very Likely?

The strongest indication comes from the show’s writing staff rather than from Paramount’s publicity department. Writer Michael Idov announced in August that he and “Lily” had joined Lioness as writers and supervising producers, describing the opportunity as a chance to write for Zoe Saldaña, Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman. Because Season 3 was already completed and airing by that point, the announcement immediately prompted speculation that the new writers were being assembled for material beyond the current episodes. Forbes and other outlets interpreted the timing as a strong sign of Season 4 development, although it still does not equal an official network renewal.

The show’s position within Paramount+’s lineup also helps its case. Paramount called Lioness a “mega hit” when renewing it for Season 3, following an earlier renewal announcement that described the series as a record-breaking espionage thriller. Taylor Sheridan also remains one of Paramount’s most important television creators, with several active series across the company. None of those factors guarantees renewal, but together they make a quiet cancellation after Season 3 considerably harder to imagine.

What Has Jill Wagner Said About Season 4?

Jill Wagner, who plays Bobby and also serves as a producer on Lioness, has been unusually confident about the show’s future. In an interview cited by Decider and Forbes, Wagner said she believed the series would receive a fourth season and suggested that viewers would understand her confidence once they saw what Sheridan had written for the Season 3 finale. She even jokingly offered to pay $100 if her prediction proved wrong, which is much stronger language than the cautious answers actors usually give when a renewal has not been announced.

Her confidence should still be treated as an expectation rather than confirmation. Actors and producers can know that creative work is underway without having a finalized distribution order from the streaming service. The distinction matters because Paramount+ is the party that ultimately announces whether another season will be produced. Wagner’s comments are therefore one of the strongest clues available, but they should not be rewritten into “Paramount confirms Season 4.”

Could Cruz Have a Bigger Role in Season 4?

Cruz Manuelos appears positioned for an even larger role if Lioness continues. Season 3 has shown Cruz becoming calmer, more experienced and increasingly capable of handling responsibilities that once belonged almost entirely to Joe. Laysla De Oliveira has said that she sees Cruz gradually resembling Joe and would like to explore that development further in a potential Season 4. Entertainment Weekly similarly noted how much Season 3 expands Cruz’s leadership and her emotional connection to both Joe and Josie.

That does not necessarily mean Cruz will replace Joe as the series lead. Zoe Saldaña remains both the central star and an executive producer, while Joe’s struggle between field work and family has become one of Lioness’ defining storylines. A fourth season could instead change their dynamic by allowing Cruz to take more operational responsibility while Joe moves further toward command. After Joe’s kidnapping and Neal’s repeated demands that she step away from direct danger, that evolution would make sense without requiring the show to remove Joe from the story.

Who Could Return for Lioness Season 4?

Any Season 4 cast list remains unofficial until Paramount announces the renewal and returning actors. The most obvious candidates would be Zoe Saldaña as Joe, Nicole Kidman as Kaitlyn Meade, Laysla De Oliveira as Cruz, Morgan Freeman as Edwin Mullins and Michael Kelly as Byron Westfield, provided the Season 3 finale does not permanently change any of their positions. TV Insider also lists Dave Annable, Jill Wagner, LaMonica Garrett, James Jordan, Genesis Rodriguez, Austin Hébert, Jonah Wharton, Thad Luckinbill and Ian Bohen among the current ensemble likely to remain relevant if the story continues.

Cruz and Josie’s relationship would be another obvious storyline to continue, particularly because Season 3 has allowed Cruz a level of personal stability she rarely had before. Joe’s marriage to Neal is far less stable after her kidnapping and decision to continue pursuing the people responsible. Those two relationships could give Season 4 contrasting versions of what life inside the Lioness world does to people trying to maintain something normal outside the job.

When Could Lioness Season 4 Be Released?

There is currently no Season 4 release date or production start date. Season 3 was officially renewed on October 1, 2025 and premiered on August 2, 2026, giving that season roughly a ten-month window between announcement and release. If Paramount renews Lioness reasonably soon and production follows a similar schedule, a 2027 return would be plausible, but that is an estimate rather than an announced date.

Scheduling may be the larger complication. Saldaña, Kidman, Freeman, Sheridan and several supporting cast members all have other active projects, while Sheridan is simultaneously overseeing multiple Paramount series. That means even an early renewal would not automatically guarantee the same production timetable as Season 3. Until Paramount announces both renewal and production, any specific month for Season 4 would be speculation.

What Should Viewers Expect Next?

For now, Lioness Season 4 sits in the unusual position of looking increasingly real behind the scenes without being officially ordered in public. New writers have joined the creative team, Jill Wagner has openly predicted another season and several cast members are already discussing where their characters could go next. At the same time, Paramount+’s official Lioness page still recognizes only three seasons, so the responsible answer remains that Season 4 is not confirmed yet.

The Season 3 finale should make the creative need for another chapter clearer, particularly after a season built around hidden networks, Joe’s damaged family life and Cruz’s growing responsibility. Whether Joe returns to the field, moves toward command or is eventually forced to reconsider her role could become one of the defining questions of another season. The evidence increasingly points toward Lioness continuing, but the final green light still belongs to Paramount+.
