Is Elaine Leaving Best Medicine? Why She Agrees to Move to New York With Al

Best Medicine returns for Season 2 with several of its characters considering lives beyond Port Wenn, but one of the premiere’s biggest decisions comes from Elaine Denton. Martin’s endlessly energetic assistant has always talked and behaved like someone whose ambitions are larger than the small Maine town around her, and Episode 1 finally gives her an opportunity to test that idea.

Al Large is preparing to leave for Columbia, creating an obvious question about what happens to his relationship with Elaine when he goes to New York. Their answer comes during an unexpectedly romantic conversation inspired by the movie Splash: Elaine agrees to go with him.

That does not currently mean Cree has been confirmed to leave Best Medicine. The premiere establishes Elaine’s intention to move, but FOX still lists Cree as one of the series’ principal stars for Season 2.

Al Is Leaving Port Wenn for Columbia

The New York storyline begins with Al rather than Elaine. Early in the premiere, Bert refers to his son’s upcoming departure for Columbia and even mentions the cost of his tuition, establishing that Al’s move is no longer simply an idea.

Al has other unresolved feelings before leaving Port Wenn. He remains upset with Bert after learning the truth about his biological father, and their strained relationship carries into the opening part of Season 2.

Elaine presents a different problem. Al does not want moving to New York to mean leaving their relationship behind, but Elaine initially sees following him as an unrealistic plan.

She points out the awkwardness of moving across the country without having her own reason for being there. From her perspective, simply staying in Al’s college dorm while he attends Columbia is not exactly the independent future she imagined for herself.

Why Elaine Changes Her Mind About New York

The turning point comes while Elaine and Al are watching Splash. The 1984 romantic comedy becomes a joke about their own situation when Al points to the sacrifices its characters make for love and begins using the movie as an argument for Elaine to take a chance on New York.

Elaine has heard the argument before. She initially reminds Al that they have already discussed the move and that she cannot simply relocate without a plan of her own.

Al then reframes the idea. He reminds Elaine that she has become something of a local personality and argues that New York could offer opportunities for her ambitions as well, joking that she might find an agent and eventually see herself on a Times Square billboard.

For Elaine, that matters because the decision stops being only about following a boyfriend. New York can also represent the larger life she has always claimed to want.

After hesitating, she finally agrees. By the end of the conversation, Elaine clearly tells Al that she will go to New York with him.

Moving Away Fits Elaine’s Character

Elaine wanting to leave Port Wenn is not a sudden Season 2 invention. FOX’s official character biography describes her as a young woman with “enormous dreams” who wants to get out of her small town and has ambitions of becoming an online star.

That restless quality has been part of Elaine since the beginning of the series. When Martin first arrives, he quickly discovers that his administrative assistant is often more interested in her latest idea, social media project or personal scheme than in the conventional expectations of working at a medical practice.

Season 1 gradually gives those ambitions more substance. Elaine becomes increasingly involved in Port Wenn’s public life and discovers that her ability to connect with people can occasionally be genuinely useful rather than simply distracting Martin.

That makes New York a believable next step. Elaine does not suddenly develop dreams of a bigger city because Al is leaving. His departure gives her a reason to act on an instinct that has been present from the start.

Is Elaine Actually Leaving Best Medicine?

Not yet, at least based on what FOX has officially announced. Cree remains listed by FOX as a series star playing Elaine Denton in Season 2, alongside Josh Charles, Abigail Spencer, Josh Segarra and Annie Potts. FOX’s current Season 2 information does not announce that Cree is departing the series or that Elaine has been written out.

That distinction is important because agreeing to move is not the same as actually moving. The Season 2 premiere gives Elaine and Al a plan, but the series still has plenty of room to complicate that plan before either character permanently leaves Port Wenn.

Elaine could change her mind, discover a reason to remain, split her time between locations or encounter an entirely different obstacle. Until the show reaches Al’s departure or FOX confirms a cast change, viewers should treat New York as Elaine’s current intention rather than her confirmed exit from Best Medicine.

What New York Means for Elaine and Al

For Al, Elaine’s decision is straightforwardly romantic. He wants her with him when he starts his life at Columbia and is delighted when she finally agrees.

For Elaine, the choice is more complicated. She loves Al, but she also does not want her future to exist only as an extension of his. That is why her initial objection focuses so much on not having a plan of her own.

The promise of New York works because it gives both sides of the character something to pursue. Elaine can stay with Al while also testing whether her ambitions have a place beyond Port Wenn.

There is also some irony in the timing. Elaine has spent much of Best Medicine dreaming about bigger possibilities, but Season 2 begins just as she has become increasingly useful to Martin and increasingly embedded in the town she always imagined leaving.

That tension could become the more interesting part of the storyline. The real question may not be whether Elaine can leave Port Wenn, but whether she still wants to once leaving becomes real.

Elaine Says Yes, But Her Exit Is Not Confirmed

Season 2 Episode 1 gives viewers a definite answer about Elaine’s immediate plan. She agrees to accompany Al to New York when he leaves for Columbia, turning their relationship into one of the premiere’s most significant long-term developments.

What the episode does not establish is that Elaine is disappearing from the series. Cree remains part of FOX’s official Season 2 cast, and there has been no announcement that she is exiting Best Medicine.

For now, the safest conclusion is that Elaine is planning a move rather than completing one. Whether New York becomes her permanent future, or another Port Wenn dream that changes before she gets there, is something Season 2 still has to resolve.
