Donal is not one of the three original Traitors chosen by Siobhán McSweeney in The Traitors Ireland Season 2 Episode 1. Those roles belong to Fionula, Páraic K and Carla. However, the premiere ends before revealing the secretly recruited fourth Traitor, so it would be premature to call Donal a confirmed Faithful at the end of the episode. What makes him suspicious is his decision during the first mission: Donal persuades every remaining player to give up immunity, accidentally giving the Traitors access to all 23 contestants for their first murder.
What exactly does Donal do during the first mission?
Donal’s controversial decision comes after the group successfully transports and assembles the large dolmen. Throughout the mission, several contestants have been forced to sacrifice themselves, which means remaining behind in shackles and losing their opportunity to receive protection from murder. The players who reach the sacred circle are supposed to be rewarded with immunity.
Donal proposes something different. Because so many teammates sacrificed their own safety to help complete the mission, he suggests that everyone still standing should remain outside the sacred circle as a gesture of fairness. That means nobody receives immunity.
The group agrees, and Donal is initially praised for the idea. His move looks generous because he is voluntarily giving up his own protection rather than taking advantage of sacrifices made by other contestants. Then everyone realizes what they have just done.
Why does the decision immediately look suspicious?
Donal’s suggestion benefits the Traitors more than almost anybody else. If several contestants had entered the sacred circle, Fionula, Páraic K and Carla would have been unable to murder them that evening. By convincing everyone to stay outside, Donal gives the Traitors the entire cast to choose from.
Carla notices the advantage immediately from the secret Traitor perspective. The moment is particularly funny because Donal is being celebrated as the mission’s hero while one of the actual Traitors is looking at exactly the same action and recognizing how convenient it is for her side.
The suspicion continues after the mission. Players begin discussing whether Donal’s supposedly Faithful gesture could have had another purpose, and even Donal appears conscious that the decision might be interpreted badly. A move designed to prove team spirit therefore becomes his first potential piece of evidence against himself.

Was Donal trying to help the Traitors?
There is no evidence in Episode 1 that Donal knowingly makes the decision to help the Traitors. His explanation is straightforward: other people have already sacrificed their safety for the group, so those who reach the finish should do the same. The other contestants understand that logic well enough to agree with him without much resistance.
That does not mean the decision is strategically harmless. The Traitors is a game where good intentions can produce terrible outcomes, and Donal effectively removes one of the Faithfuls’ few protections on the very first day. What looks socially generous is strategically dangerous.
This distinction matters when judging him. A bad decision for the Faithfuls does not automatically make someone a Traitor, especially when the entire group willingly accepts the proposal.
Could Donal secretly be the fourth Traitor?
Episode 1 never shows Donal being seriously discussed during the fourth-Traitor selection. The three names highlighted in the conclave are Sean A, Laura and Edelle, with the Traitors giving specific reasons for why each might strengthen their team. They reach their decision shortly afterward, but the person’s identity is hidden.
That makes Donal an unlikely fourth Traitor based on the evidence viewers receive. Still, because the episode itself refuses to show the recruit, the safest conclusion after Episode 1 is that Donal’s final status has not been absolutely confirmed. The edit strongly points elsewhere, but the actual reveal is being saved.
More importantly, Donal could not have engineered the mission decision as one of the original Traitors because he had not received a shoulder tap from Siobhán. If he somehow turns out to be the fourth recruit, that recruitment happens later that night, after his immunity decision has already taken place.
Was giving up immunity actually a mistake?
From a pure Faithful strategy perspective, yes, giving up everyone’s immunity is difficult to defend. Protecting several contestants would have reduced the Traitors’ possible murder pool and may have forced them toward a less desirable target. Instead, Fionula, Páraic K and Carla finish the mission knowing that nobody is protected.
Socially, Donal gains something in return. Other contestants repeatedly praise him, describe him as the hero of the challenge and recognize the gesture as selfless. In a game where appearing cooperative can be as important as making optimal decisions, that reputation could help him survive a future banishment.

The problem is that The Traitors punishes actions that can be interpreted in two ways. If Donal becomes influential, somebody can always return to the first mission and argue that his “heroic” decision gave the murderers exactly what they wanted.
Donal’s biggest problem may be appearing too Faithful
Donal’s position after Episode 1 is unusually complicated. He behaves like a player trying to keep the group equal, yet his action produces an outcome any Traitor would happily accept. That contradiction makes him useful to both sides of an argument.
If Donal survives the first murder, his immunity decision could follow him into later discussions. Players already know how quickly harmless behavior can become evidence, as Edelle discovers simply by drinking her water after the Traitor selection. Donal has given them something much larger to debate.
For now, the episode does not establish Donal as a Traitor. It establishes something more dangerous in this particular game: a Faithful-looking player whose most memorable decision happens to make the Traitors’ night significantly easier.
