Is Bethany Jeremiah Paulsen’s Daughter in Anna Pigeon? Her Betrayal Explained

Bethany Lopez has spent much of Anna Pigeon’s first season positioned somewhere between the park community and its central drama. Married to ranger Manny Lopez, she is close enough to Anna’s circle to hear what is happening without appearing to have any direct stake in Jeremiah Paulsen’s battles with the park. Episode 6 finally makes that apparent distance look carefully constructed.

Her behavior after Anna escapes the cave becomes increasingly difficult to read as ordinary concern. Once Anna gets close to JP Paulsen and the truth about Kay Wilson, Bethany stops watching from the sidelines and reveals just how much she already knows.

Why Did Bethany Betray Anna?

Bethany betrays Anna because she has been protecting Jeremiah Paulsen and cleaning up the consequences of JP’s actions. The cave mystery begins with JP, but Bethany is responsible for making sure what happened there does not lead directly back to the Paulsen family.

JP’s problem begins with Kay. He was with her before she suffered the fatal head injury, and after her death, he concealed her body rather than reporting what happened. Anna then became another problem when she saw enough to threaten the cover-up, leading JP to push her into the cave. Bethany becomes involved after that.

Her actions are considerably more deliberate than simply helping a frightened relative hide evidence. Bethany drugs Anna, cuts her and participates in the effort to make sure she cannot expose what happened. She also helps remove evidence from the cave after Anna gets out.

That explains why Bethany had such a strong interest in Anna’s condition and memories. She was not trying to understand what happened to a friend. She was trying to determine how much Anna could still prove.

Why Was Bethany Helping JP Paulsen?

Bethany’s loyalty ultimately appears to be directed toward Jeremiah rather than JP himself. JP creates the immediate crisis, but Bethany treats the aftermath as something the family needs contained.

The distinction matters. JP is Jeremiah’s nephew, yet Episode 6 repeatedly shows that Jeremiah regards him as someone capable of creating problems that other people will then have to solve. Bethany effectively becomes that person. She helps erase the physical trail and attempts to neutralize Anna when the investigation starts moving back toward the Paulsens.

Her willingness to protect JP makes much more sense after the final scene reveals that her connection to Jeremiah is likely personal rather than financial.

Bethany is not simply a woman who took money from the most powerful man in the area. She appears to have been protecting her own family.

Is Jeremiah Paulsen Really Bethany’s Father?

Episode 6 very strongly indicates that Jeremiah Paulsen is Bethany’s father, although the series stops just short of an explicit verbal confirmation.

The clue comes after Bethany’s arrest. She tells Manny to call her father. When Manny makes the call using the number Bethany provides, the phone that rings belongs to Jeremiah.

The sequence is constructed as a reveal rather than an accidental coincidence. Director and executive producer Lea Thompson was asked afterward whether viewers should interpret Bethany as a secret Paulsen. Her response was that the ending is “a pretty good hint.”

That wording leaves the show room to explain more about Bethany’s family history later, but there is little reason at this stage to treat Jeremiah answering the call as a random misdirection. Episode 6 wants viewers to reconsider Bethany as someone who has been hiding a direct blood connection to Anna’s biggest adversary.

Did Manny Know Bethany Was Connected to Jeremiah?

Nothing in Episode 6 indicates that Manny knew the truth beforehand. His reaction to Bethany’s exposure and the final phone call works because he appears to be discovering this part of his wife’s life at the same time as everyone else.

That creates a painful complication for Manny. His marriage was already portrayed as a relationship with its own private pressures, but Bethany’s secret is on an entirely different scale. She has apparently concealed who her father is while living alongside people Jeremiah repeatedly clashes with. More seriously, she has now participated in crimes that endangered Anna.

Lea Thompson has described Manny as being caught “between a rock and a hard place” because Bethany remains his wife despite what she has done. Spiridakos has also teased that his reaction to Bethany and Anna will be more complicated than simply turning against Bethany immediately.

That makes Manny one of the characters most affected by the reveal even though he had no role in the cover-up.

Why Did Bethany Drug and Hurt Anna Instead of Simply Killing Her?

Bethany’s treatment of Anna makes the cave case feel more personal than an ordinary witness elimination. If the only goal had been to stop Anna from talking, there were easier ways to achieve it after JP pushed her underground. Instead, Anna is drugged, cut and psychologically tormented.

Episode 6 confirms Bethany’s involvement but does not fully explain every choice she made inside the cave. It would therefore be premature to invent a deeper motive for the specific way Anna was treated. What is clear is that Bethany was willing to hurt Anna repeatedly in service of the cover-up and later tries to control the situation again when Anna gets too close to the truth.

That is one reason Frederick’s earlier question proves so important. If the person responsible simply wanted Anna dead, why keep her alive long enough to suffer? The answer is only partly resolved by Bethany’s confession.

The practical cover-up is clear. The full psychology behind Bethany’s treatment of Anna remains something the series can still explore.

Bethany’s Reveal Makes Jeremiah Much More Dangerous

Before Episode 6, Jeremiah’s power largely comes from money, land and his ability to pressure people around Glacier National Park. Anna already knows he is willing to manipulate situations to get what he wants, but he can still be viewed as an external threat. Bethany changes that.

Her marriage to Manny places someone apparently connected to Jeremiah directly inside Anna’s social and professional orbit. Her involvement with the cave demonstrates that Jeremiah’s influence can operate through people Anna does not associate with the Paulsen name. JP may be reckless enough to create problems, but Bethany shows that the family also has people capable of quietly cleaning them up.

It also reframes earlier moments in which Bethany seemed unusually interested in Anna or the park’s affairs. Not every conversation needs to have been part of a calculated plot, but viewers can no longer assume Bethany was simply Manny’s somewhat withdrawn wife trying to find her place.

Will Bethany Turn Against Jeremiah?

Episode 6 does not give any indication that Bethany is ready to betray Jeremiah. Even after being exposed, her instinct is to have Manny contact her father, suggesting that Jeremiah remains the person she expects to help when everything falls apart.

That may become much more difficult once she is forced to choose between Jeremiah and Manny.

The cast and producers have already indicated that Manny’s response to his wife will remain important rather than disappearing after her arrest. If Bethany genuinely cares about him, the marriage gives the show a pressure point that could eventually test her loyalty to the Paulsens.

For now, however, the strongest reading of Episode 6 is that Bethany has been protecting Jeremiah’s interests willingly. The final phone call is not simply a surprise about her parentage. It explains why someone Anna considered a friend was prepared to go so far for a family whose name she had carefully kept hidden.
