How will Xavier’s evolving trust in Agent Robinson shape the investigation into Cal’s death in Paradise E5?
How Robinson's disclosure of Cal's hidden gun cache turns a fragile working truce into an operational alliance against Sinatra in Paradise Episode 5.

Spoilers follow for Paradise Season 1, through Episode 5.
By the time Agent Nicole Robinson (Krys Marshall) sits down beside Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) at a bar in “In the Palaces of Crowned Kings,” the fifth episode of Hulu’s Paradise (February 11, 2025), the investigation into President Cal Bradford’s (James Marsden) death has stalled in two directions at once. DNA samples Robinson collected from the crime scene never reached the lab. And Agent Billy Pace (Jon Beavers), who had been warning Xavier about Samantha “Sinatra” Redmond (Julianne Nicholson), is now dead. What breaks the stall is Robinson’s admission that she was in love with Cal. What makes it count operationally is what follows: she knows where Cal hid his guns.
Robinson Was Xavier’s Boss, Not His Equal
Robinson is Xavier’s direct superior inside Paradise, running Liberty Grove and carrying institutional authority he cannot access on his own. Her affair with Cal places her in Xavier’s crosshairs the moment his murder becomes an investigation. In a post-season interview with CBR, Krys Marshall described the early dynamic as natural opposition: from Xavier’s side, the implicit charge against Robinson is “you’re supposed to be my superior and the one who’s calling the shots, and meanwhile, you’re screwing the President.” Both agents feel the other is behaving out of character. The result is a working relationship that the show spends much of its first half repairing.
Robinson’s institutional position gives her access Xavier cannot get on his own, including control of the crime scene and the chain of custody for forensic evidence. When she tells Xavier at the funeral that DNA samples vanished in transit, she is not just sharing a setback. She is confirming that whoever blocked the samples could reach inside official procedures, which narrows the suspects to people with real authority in Paradise.
The Funeral, the Bar, and the Admission
Episode 5 moves between Cal’s state funeral inside Paradise and the bar conversation where Robinson tells Xavier she was in love with Cal. At the funeral, Robinson intercepts Xavier with urgent news: the DNA samples collected from Cal’s crime scene never arrived at the lab, and she believes Sinatra arranged their disappearance.
At the bar, Robinson sits with Xavier and reports on Agent Billy Pace. His fentanyl dose was too high to be recreational. The coroner’s ruling is suicide. Xavier already knew Pace had been trying to warn him about Sinatra before his death, which Jane Driscoll (Nicole Brydon Bloom) staged as an overdose at the end of Episode 4. With both Cal and Pace now dead and physical evidence removed from the chain, the pattern comes into focus in one conversation.
Robinson then tells Xavier she was in love with Cal. She is not protecting Sinatra. She is grieving, she is Xavier’s direct superior, and she is now his most reliable source of information that Sinatra has worked to suppress.
The Gun Cache Gives the Alliance Operational Weight
When Xavier says confronting Sinatra without weapons is close to impossible, Robinson corrects him. Cal told her about a hidden gun cache in the sub-basement of the arena. The access code is Cal’s inauguration date. Sinatra has no reason to know Cal shared this with Robinson.
The cache disclosure gives the alliance an offensive capability. Identifying that evidence was tampered with is useful. Holding the location of an unsanctioned weapons cache that Sinatra knows nothing about is a different kind of asset, one that makes the next move against her possible.
What Cal Told Robinson, and How
Cal disclosed the gun cache location in a late-night conversation captured in a flashback to the night of his death. He contacted Robinson, who came over intending to end the relationship. She was heading for the door when Cal declared his love. Krys Marshall, speaking to CBR after Season 1 concluded, described this as the scene that prompted her to ask the writers for a first name for Robinson. She argued Cal would not use her surname in that intimate moment. The writers eventually settled on Nicole, after first considering Kate. In the episode, Robinson tells Cal to call her when he is sober. He responds by telling her where the guns are.
Cal did not log the weapons with the government he led or brief a deputy. He shared the location with Robinson in an unplanned conversation on the night of his death. Whether or not he anticipated what was coming, the result is that Robinson becomes the keeper of information that exists entirely outside official channels, placed there not by strategy but by circumstance.
A Cautious Trust With More to Learn
Xavier and Robinson leave Episode 5 working toward the same goal, but the alliance is not yet complete. Screen Rant notes that Xavier openly admits he still cannot fully trust Robinson as they commit to acting against Sinatra. That friction does not dissolve in one bar conversation. Krys Marshall, in her post-season CBR interview, described the arc across Season 1 as Robinson moving from Xavier’s no-nonsense boss to the one person he trusts completely by the finale. Episode 5 is where that shift begins, not where it lands.
What neither agent knows at the close of Episode 5 is that Xavier’s daughter Presley has Cal’s tablet. The device contains classified files Sinatra concealed from Cal himself, including evidence that the surface remains habitable and that members of the expedition team were killed. The gun cache gives Xavier and Robinson an offensive capability. The tablet will provide the evidence Cal died trying to surface.
Robinson’s role in Episode 5 is not that of a colleague Xavier has simply learned to work with. She is holding the specific knowledge a president chose to protect by keeping it entirely out of official hands. Whether Xavier fully trusts her or not, Robinson now holds information the investigation cannot access through any other channel.
