Aemond Targaryen has never hidden his belief that the Iron Throne chose the wrong brother. In the preview for House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 7, he finally turns that resentment into something resembling a coronation speech: “A new dawn is coming. A new line of unsullied kings.”

No, Aemond is not talking about the Unsullied army from Game of Thrones. He appears to be declaring the end of Aegon II’s royal branch and imagining a new Targaryen dynasty beginning with himself, most likely with Alys Rivers beside him at Harrenhal.

Episode 7 has not aired at the time of writing, so the precise context of the line remains unconfirmed. Still, the events at Harrenhal and the future recorded in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood make Aemond’s intention increasingly difficult to misunderstand.

Is Aemond Talking About Daenerys’ Unsullied Army?

The wording is clearly designed to make Game of Thrones viewers pause, but Aemond is almost certainly using “unsullied” as an adjective, not as the name of Daenerys Targaryen’s famous army.

The capital-U Unsullied are the elite soldiers trained in Astapor. They have no connection to Westerosi succession or the Targaryen royal family of Aemond’s time. More importantly, Aemond speaks about creating a hereditary “line” of kings, something that has nothing to do with an army of eunuch warriors.

Here, “unsullied” means untainted or uncorrupted. Aemond believes the existing royal order has been spoiled by weak rulers, divided loyalties and years of political compromise. Aegon has failed to become the formidable king Aemond thinks the Greens require, while Alicent, Otto and the rest of the family have repeatedly tried to restrain Aemond’s more violent instincts.

In Aemond’s mind, that makes him the clean beginning after a ruined generation. It is a very Aemond way of describing a coup: not as an act of betrayal, but as a purification.

What Is the “New Line” Aemond Wants to Create?

The most important word in Aemond’s statement is not “unsullied.” It is “line.”

Aemond is not merely talking about taking the throne for himself. By imagining a line of kings, plural, he is already thinking about descendants. He wants his accession to begin a separate royal branch that would continue through his own children.

The preview also has Aemond treating Aegon’s disappearance as an abdication. That is a convenient interpretation rather than an uncontested legal fact. Aegon has not publicly surrendered his crown and formally named Aemond as his heir. Aemond is simply declaring that his brother’s absence has created an opening and that he intends to fill it.

That distinction tells us plenty about his state of mind. Aemond no longer sees himself as the temporary prince regent holding the kingdom together for Aegon. He sees himself as the founder of the dynasty that should have ruled from the beginning.

Aegon’s authority is collapsing, his family has been devastated, and the Greens are splintering into competing factions. Aemond looks at that wreckage and does not see tragedy. He sees available space.

Do Alys Rivers and the Dragon Eggs Explain Aemond’s Plan?

Alys Rivers is the missing piece that turns Aemond’s boast from ordinary ambition into a possible dynastic plan.

Season 3 Episode 6 brings Aemond and Alys closer while revealing a cache of five dragon eggs hidden at Harrenhal. Alys does not present the eggs merely as weapons that could help the Greens win the current war. She uses them to offer Aemond an entirely different future, one built around Harrenhal, their relationship and the children they might have together.

The eggs give Aemond’s imagined dynasty something every Targaryen ruler wants: dragons for the next generation.

Vhagar makes Aemond dangerous in the present, but she is ancient and cannot secure his family’s future indefinitely. A clutch of eggs could. In his most flattering version of events, Aemond and Alys would establish a new household at Harrenhal, raise dragonriding heirs and eventually replace the damaged branch descending from Aegon.

There is, of course, a glaring contradiction in his use of “unsullied.” Alys has no recognized royal status and is widely believed to be a bastard of House Strong. Unless Aemond married her and successfully defended the legitimacy of their children, his supposedly spotless new dynasty would immediately face questions over its claim.

Aemond is not especially troubled by contradictions when they stand between him and power. He wants the grandeur of Targaryen tradition without being limited by the rules that tradition imposes on everyone else.

What Does Fire & Blood Reveal About Aemond and Alys’ Child?

The strongest evidence for this interpretation comes from Fire & Blood.

In Martin’s history, Alys becomes Aemond’s companion during his occupation of Harrenhal and later claims to be carrying his child. After Aemond’s death, she remains at the castle and eventually emerges as the so-called Witch Queen of Harrenhal.

Alys then presents a boy she says is Aemond’s son and rightful heir. She claims that the child has a legitimate right to the Iron Throne, although the book never settles the questions surrounding his birth, paternity or eventual fate. Her story simply disappears from the historical record before those claims are resolved.

That unfinished piece of Targaryen history gives the television series considerable room to expand Alys and Aemond’s story. The “new line of unsullied kings” may be the show’s way of establishing that Aemond consciously plans the dynasty Alys later tries to preserve.

In the book, readers mostly receive Aemond’s relationship with Alys through disputed accounts written after the fact. The series can give that relationship an emotional and political foundation. The dragon eggs, their growing intimacy and Aemond’s royal declaration all point in the same direction.

Their child is no longer being set up as an unexpected consequence of an affair. He may become the central promise on which Alys builds Aemond’s final ambitions.

Is Aemond’s “New Dawn” a Prophecy or a Delusion?

Aemond’s declaration sounds prophetic, especially while he is living beside a woman who appears capable of seeing fragments of the future. That does not mean Alys has promised him that his descendants will actually rule.

She may simply be showing Aemond the future he desperately wants to believe in.

Aemond has spent much of his life feeling overlooked, mocked and placed beneath a brother he considers inferior. Alys offers him a private kingdom in which none of those humiliations matter. At Harrenhal, he can be the dragonlord, the founder and the father of future kings. For a man obsessed with proving that he should have inherited everything, it is an almost perfectly designed temptation.

That is why “unsullied” reveals more about Aemond than it does about his future children. His proposed dynasty is not clean. It is being imagined in the middle of a civil war, after betrayals within his own family and under the influence of a woman whose intentions remain impossible to read.

Aemond means that Aegon’s reign is finished and that a new royal bloodline will begin with him. The line is not a reference to Daenerys’ soldiers. It is Aemond announcing his intention to become the founder of a new Targaryen dynasty, with Alys Rivers, Harrenhal and their possible son at its center.

Whether that makes him a future king or merely the latest man to lose himself inside Harrenhal is another matter.
