Russ Holliday and Ricky Hudson do not officially become a couple by the end of Chad Powers Season 2, but the season takes their relationship much further than a simple friendship. Instead of giving them an easy romantic payoff, the final episodes concentrate on something Russ arguably needs more: Ricky accepting that Chad Powers and Russ Holliday are not two separate men.
That distinction has defined their relationship from the beginning. Ricky could respect Chad as her quarterback while despising Russ for the Rose Bowl incident that destroyed his reputation. Once she discovers that they are the same person, she is forced to reconsider everything she believed about both of them, and Season 2 slowly turns that uncomfortable situation into one of the show’s most important emotional relationships.

Ricky Starts Season 2 Knowing Chad’s Secret
Ricky enters the season carrying information that could instantly end Russ’s second chance. She knows Chad Powers is a disguise and that the quarterback she has spent months coaching is actually the disgraced former star she already disliked long before Chad arrived at South Georgia.
Understandably, she does not immediately forgive him. Russ lied to her repeatedly, placed her father’s program at risk and allowed Ricky to develop trust in someone who technically did not exist. Even so, exposing him would create problems for the entire Catfish program, not just for Russ, so Ricky agrees to keep the secret while trying to determine what kind of person he has become.

Her actions begin saying more than her anger does. When Chad suffers a shoulder problem early in the season, Ricky helps Russ avoid the kind of medical examination that could expose the disguise. Their partnership is uneasy, but she is already protecting him in ways she would never have imagined doing for Russ Holliday before Chad entered her life.
Ricky Begins Seeing the Real Russ Differently
One of the season’s more revealing developments comes when Ricky starts studying old footage of Russ Holliday as a quarterback. She has spent so much time thinking about his disastrous public downfall that it is easy to forget how talented he actually was before everything collapsed.
Russ does not respond by insisting that he was misunderstood or blaming everyone else for his problems. He recognizes that his own behavior destroyed his career, and Ricky begins noticing that the man in front of her is capable of a level of self-awareness she never associated with the old Russ.
Their conversation eventually reaches a point where Ricky tells him, “Russ, I can be your friend.” The significance is not simply that she offers friendship. She calls him Russ while doing it, effectively acknowledging that the person she has grown close to is not merely Chad Powers.

Does Russ Have Feelings for Ricky?
Russ’s feelings become increasingly obvious as Season 2 continues. His reaction to Jay Palmer’s growing presence around Ricky contains more jealousy than he wants to admit, particularly when Jay helps create a professional opportunity for her. Russ even slips into petty comparisons that make his insecurity fairly transparent.
His attachment to Ricky is also visible in more serious situations. When Gerry gets closer to discovering Chad’s identity, Russ becomes determined to shield Ricky from the consequences. Unfortunately, Russ’s instinct to protect people often takes the form of withholding information from them, which creates another major conflict between the two.
The clearest example involves Coach Hudson’s health. Russ learns that Hudson was not medically cleared to return but keeps that information from Ricky. He believes he is sparing her pain, while Ricky sees another example of Russ deciding what she should know and when she should know it.
The conflict matters because it proves that Russ’s transformation is incomplete. Chad Powers has helped him become kinder and less self-centered, but becoming a better person does not erase the habits Russ spent years developing.

Ricky Gets the Syracuse Coaching Job
Ricky’s career takes an important step forward when she is offered a quarterback coaching position at Syracuse. The opportunity gives her a chance to establish herself away from her father’s program and build a coaching identity that belongs entirely to her.
She ultimately decides to accept the job, and one of the people she most wants to tell is Russ. When she tells him she got the position, Russ responds that he knew she would, showing how much confidence he has developed in her ability.
The decision also changes the practical circumstances surrounding their relationship. Ricky will no longer be Chad’s coach after the Texas game, removing one of the professional complications that has always made any romantic relationship between them difficult. The finale, however, wisely does not treat that development as an excuse to immediately push them into a conventional romance.
Why Ricky Chooses to Stay With Russ
Gerry’s blackmail during the Texas game becomes the clearest indication of what Russ now means to Ricky. Gerry forces Russ to sabotage his performance under the threat of exposing the Chad Powers secret and dragging Ricky and Danny into the consequences.
When Ricky learns what is happening, Russ effectively gives her the opportunity to walk away. She does not owe him another rescue, especially after the lies and complications his secret has brought into her life.
Ricky chooses to remain beside him. More importantly, she explains that she stayed because of both Chad and Russ. That distinction is crucial because earlier in their relationship she could separate the quarterback she cared about from the man she disliked.
By the finale, Ricky no longer needs that separation. Chad’s compassion, Russ’s arrogance, his failures, his talent and the genuine progress he has made are all parts of the same person. Ricky understands that and still chooses not to abandon him.
Do Ricky and Russ Become a Couple?
Russ and Ricky do not officially become boyfriend and girlfriend in the Season 2 finale. The series clearly gives their relationship romantic tension, particularly through Russ’s jealousy and emotional dependence on Ricky, but it stops short of confirming them as a couple.
That restraint actually suits where both characters are at the end of the season. Ricky is leaving for Syracuse just as Russ’s situation becomes more dangerous than ever, with Tricia Yeager revealing that she knows Chad is really Russ Holliday. Their lives are moving in different directions at the exact moment their relationship becomes more honest.
For Russ, however, Ricky’s acceptance may matter more than a kiss or a relationship label. He created Chad Powers partly because he believed nobody would give Russ Holliday another chance. Ricky has now seen both identities, including the parts he desperately wanted to hide, and she has chosen to remain in his life.
Season 2 therefore does not end by confirming that Russ gets the girl. It ends by showing that Ricky finally sees the real Russ Holliday and no longer feels the need to run from him. If the series continues, that leaves a much stronger foundation for the romantic relationship that Chad Powers has been gradually building toward.
