JK Coe has gradually become one of the strangest and most unpredictable members of Jackson Lamb’s team, but Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 4 puts him in one of his most serious situations yet. After spending much of the season helping River Cartwright and Sid Baker stay ahead of the people following them, Coe finally discovers who at least one of their pursuers really works for.

The revelation comes during the group’s attempt to disappear inside a busy shopping center. What initially looks like another temporary refuge quickly becomes a turning point, as Coe separates from River and Sid and confronts Jim alone. By the time River finds him again, the situation has taken a grim turn.

Why Is Coe With River and Sid?

Coe becomes involved with River and Sid after the pair escape from David Cartwright’s house and realize they are being followed. Jackson Lamb has already activated the Blake’s Grave protocol, meaning current and former Slough House personnel are supposed to disappear from their normal routines until the threat can be understood.

River and Sid are particularly exposed. River’s name appears to have been selected from the compromised Slough House information, while Sid has her own unexplained connection to Russia after discovering that official travel documents were issued in her name.

Coe becomes their practical backup. He helps them stay mobile and gives them a better chance of avoiding Jim and Jane, the two operatives who have repeatedly managed to stay close behind.

Why Do River, Sid and Coe Go to the Shopping Center?

Episode 4 begins with River and Sid trying to use a telephone at a bowling alley so Sid can contact Diana Taverner. Their pursuers arrive before they can feel secure, forcing the group to move again.

River also needs attention for an injured hand, giving them another reason to stop somewhere with shops, people and basic medical supplies. A busy shopping center seems useful because Jim and Jane are less likely to create an obvious scene in front of a large crowd.

The strategy works only temporarily. Their pursuers eventually realize River and the others intend to stay inside rather than simply pass through, so they enter the building and resume their search.

Coe Identifies Jim’s GRU Connection

Coe notices Jim before River and Sid do and follows him into the men’s room. Their encounter becomes one of the episode’s most important revelations because Coe learns that Jim is connected to the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence service.

Until this point, the people following River and Sid have been mysterious professionals whose exact loyalties remain uncertain. Jim’s GRU connection confirms that the pursuit is tied directly to the Russian side of the Season 6 story.

That information also supports Sid’s growing belief that her mysterious travel records were connected to a real intelligence operation in Russia rather than a simple administrative error. Unfortunately, Coe has little opportunity to pass that information on.

What Happens Between Coe and Jim?

Coe confronts Jim away from the public areas of the shopping center. Both men quickly recognize that the other is highly trained, and the encounter becomes physical.

The episode keeps the confrontation relatively contained, but the outcome is severe. When River later reaches the area looking for Coe, he finds his colleague unresponsive after the encounter.

For River, there is little time to process what has happened because Sid is also missing and the group has already been split apart. The sequence therefore turns what had been an effort to hide in public into one of the episode’s most consequential moments.

Does JK Coe Die in Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 4?

Episode 4 presents Coe’s condition as fatal when River finds him following the confrontation with Jim. The episode does not give Coe another active scene afterward, and River reacts to what he finds as another major loss for Slough House.

The moment is particularly striking because Coe has always seemed unusually difficult to unsettle. Since joining Lamb’s team, he has remained emotionally detached in situations that would leave most of the other Horses shaken.

His calmness has also made him useful. He rarely panics, notices details other people miss and is capable of acting decisively when situations deteriorate. Episode 4 turns those qualities against him by placing him opposite someone operating at a similar professional level.

Why Coe’s Discovery Matters

Even though Coe is unable to bring his discovery back to Lamb personally, learning that Jim is tied to the GRU helps make sense of the broader conspiracy.

Diana receives a call from senior GRU officer Vassily Rasnokov in the same episode. Vassily believes Sid Baker was responsible for an operation in Kazan and wants her handed over. The connection suggests that Jim and Jane’s pursuit of River and Sid is linked to that Russian grievance.

Sid insists she never went to Kazan, and earlier episodes established that travel documents were created in her name. Someone therefore appears to have used Sid’s identity for an operation that the GRU now attributes to her. Coe’s confrontation with Jim provides another piece of evidence that the Russian response is already happening inside Britain.

What Coe’s Fate Means for River and Slough House

Coe’s apparent loss leaves River even more isolated at the worst possible moment. Sid has trusted Diana and attempted to make contact with her, while River has repeatedly argued that the Park may no longer be safe.

That argument becomes even stronger when Diana chooses to cooperate with Vassily and has Sid’s call traced. Shortly afterward, Jim and Jane locate Sid and take her away.

For Slough House, Episode 4 reinforces the scale of the crisis. The threat is no longer limited to former agents whose names appeared in old files. Current members of Lamb’s team are now directly caught in the consequences of an intelligence operation they knew nothing about.

Coe manages to uncover one of the season’s most important facts before his final confrontation: the people pursuing them are not simply hired outsiders. At least one of them is connected to Russian intelligence, giving Lamb and River a much clearer idea of the forces now moving against Slough House.
