A Different World returns to Hillman College with a new generation, but Netflix’s sequel does something the original sitcom could only occasionally attempt. Instead of keeping most of student life inside studio-built classrooms and dorm rooms, the new series takes Hillman outdoors and allows viewers to move through real quads, walkways and college buildings. Maleah Joi Moon leads the series as Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, as she begins her freshman year at the same fictional HBCU that shaped her parents. To make that return feel authentic, the filmmakers went to Atlanta and built the new Hillman from three real historically Black colleges.

Where Was A Different World Filmed?

The 2026 A Different World was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, with production using the Atlanta University Center as the physical foundation for Hillman College. Netflix confirmed that the 10-episode season wrapped production in Atlanta, while the United Negro College Fund identifies Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College and Morehouse College as the three HBCUs used during filming. Together, the campuses allow Hillman to feel like a functioning university rather than a collection of isolated exterior shots.

That decision is especially significant because the new series has switched to a single-camera format. Showrunner Felicia Pride explained that this approach lets the production see far more of Hillman than the original series could, since much of the earlier sitcom was recorded on stages. By filming extensively around the Atlanta University Center, the sequel gains real lawns, academic buildings and campus movement that would be difficult to reproduce entirely inside a studio.

Clark Atlanta University Became a Major Part of Hillman

Clark Atlanta University is one of the clearest real-world locations behind the new Hillman College. The connection became public even before Netflix formally ordered the sequel, when Hillman College signs began appearing around the Clark Atlanta campus during production of the pilot in July 2025. University President George T. French Jr. confirmed at the time that the pilot was being shot there.

Once Netflix moved ahead with the full series, Clark Atlanta remained part of the wider Atlanta University Center production. The campus gives Hillman genuine HBCU architecture and student spaces rather than asking an unrelated university to stand in for the fictional college. Local Atlanta reporting later noted that the production had been seen around Clark Atlanta and that Hillman signage was used to transform the real campus for the show.

There is also a satisfying historical connection here. Clark Atlanta was associated with the screen identity of Hillman during the original A Different World as well, with campus imagery from Atlanta helping establish the fictional college even when most of the sitcom’s scenes were filmed in California studios. The sequel is therefore returning to a place that already has ties to Hillman’s visual history, but using it much more extensively this time.

Spelman College Also Stands In for Hillman

Spelman College is another confirmed filming location for the Netflix sequel. Spelman sits within the Atlanta University Center alongside Morehouse and Clark Atlanta, allowing the production to move between different real campuses while presenting them on screen as sections of one fictional university. UNCF specifically confirms that the series filmed at all three institutions.

Spelman’s inclusion gives the production another link to A Different World’s past. The original series also used real-life campus imagery from Spelman when establishing Hillman, so the location has a connection to both generations of the show. The difference is that the single-camera sequel can now spend considerably more time physically moving through those environments rather than using them mainly to introduce scenes that continue on a soundstage.

The production has not released a detailed guide assigning every Hillman classroom, dormitory or quad scene to a specific Spelman building. That makes it more accurate to describe Spelman as one of the campuses collectively creating Hillman rather than guessing which individual scenes belong to it. The series deliberately blends the three HBCUs into one screen university.

Morehouse College Completes the New Hillman Campus

Morehouse College is the third major HBCU confirmed as part of the filming. Like Spelman and Clark Atlanta, Morehouse belongs to the Atlanta University Center, which means the three institutions sit close enough together for a production to use them as pieces of the same fictional environment without constantly moving across the city.

Morehouse also broadens the visual character of Hillman because each campus has its own architecture and layout. Instead of relying on one college to provide every exterior, the filmmakers can select different parts of the AUC depending on what a scene requires. Felicia Pride has said that filming across Spelman, Morehouse and Clark Atlanta gave the series the actual “texture” of an HBCU campus that the original production could not capture in the same way.

As with Spelman, there is currently no reliable official breakdown saying that one particular Morehouse building represents a named Hillman hall or academic department. The campuses work collectively, which is part of why Hillman can appear larger and more varied than any single production location.

Real HBCU Students Help Fill the Campus

The authenticity does not end with the buildings. According to UNCF and the production team, 59 percent of the show’s background performers were HBCU students or alumni, and roughly 32 percent of that group came from the Atlanta University Center community. HBCU students also worked as production assistants, while a student council advised the creative team on storylines and contemporary campus life.

That makes the Atlanta locations more than convenient scenery. When Deborah walks across Hillman or attends a crowded campus event, many of the people surrounding her have actual experience at historically Black colleges. The production is using the real campus environment and the community around it to shape the fictional school rather than simply borrowing the buildings after students have gone home.

Is Hillman College a Real University?

Hillman College is fictional, despite how convincingly the Netflix series places it within Atlanta. The school was created for the original A Different World and exists within the show’s universe as an HBCU with generations of alumni including Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. Deborah’s arrival continues that family legacy, but viewers cannot enroll at Hillman or visit a single campus bearing that name.

What they can visit are the universities that collectively create it. Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Spelman College are all real HBCUs with their own histories, students and identities. The sequel combines parts of those campuses on screen, so Hillman is best understood as a fictional institution assembled from authentic Atlanta locations rather than a renamed version of one real school.

Atlanta Gives the New Series a Different Look

The move toward extensive location photography is one of the clearest visual differences between this A Different World and its predecessor. The original series remains closely associated with Hillman, but the limitations of multi-camera television meant much of that college experience unfolded on constructed sets. The Netflix sequel has more freedom to follow students across quads, outdoor events and real campus spaces.

That makes Atlanta an unusually meaningful filming location rather than simply a city chosen for production incentives or studio availability. A Different World is returning to a fictional HBCU at a moment when its creators want Hillman to feel connected to present-day college life, and filming at three genuine HBCUs gives the series an environment that already carries the history and culture it wants to represent.
