What Happens in Youth Episode 1?

Alex’s day begins badly when her jaw suddenly locks during an important meeting with actor Damian Lewis, who is pitching his unusual manuscript to her literary agency. A doctor tells her the problem is arthritis, which immediately feeds Alex’s growing anxiety about entering her fifties. Rather than quietly accepting middle age, she decides she needs to start dating again before the imaginary window she has created for herself closes. Horgan has explained that this fear of running out of time was one of the central ideas behind Youth.

Ruari, meanwhile, is hardly making Alex’s transition easier. His final school event becomes chaotic when he delivers an unexpected political speech, while Alex also notices tension between him and Mia, someone from his social circle. His father Lorcan then announces that work is taking him to Canada for six months, effectively leaving Alex to deal with Ruari’s next stage largely by herself. Ruari eventually heads to the University of Kent, and Alex becomes emotional as she watches him go.

Why Does Patrick Come Back Into Alex’s Life?

With Ruari apparently gone, Alex makes an awkward attempt to re-enter the dating world. A meeting arranged through her friend and boss Sam proves that being technically available does not mean she is emotionally prepared to start from scratch with a stranger. The encounter leaves Alex more conscious of what she actually wants rather than less interested in companionship.

That is where Patrick becomes important. Alex and Patrick already have a casual romantic history, and their familiarity is considerably easier than trying to manufacture chemistry with somebody new. Youth Episode 1 Ending: Why Does Ruari Come Home?

Ruari appears at Alex’s house in the middle of the night when he is supposed to be at university. What Happens in Youth Episode 2?

“Wagon Burner” begins with Alex trying to understand why Ruari is still home. He finally tells her that he has decided to drop out of university, but offers almost nothing beyond that declaration. Alex refuses to accept such a sudden decision and eventually agrees to accompany him back to Kent. What she finds there turns his unexplained return into a much bigger mystery.

Alex’s professional life is hardly calmer. She and Sam must deal with veteran novelist Charlotte Arbor and Charlotte’s highly involved daughter Liv, who begins questioning whether the agency is doing enough for her mother’s career. Alex also continues seeing Patrick, and their casual relationship starts becoming harder to describe as merely casual. Horgan’s publishing setting works as another source of responsibility for Alex, who is effectively expected to look after demanding writers at work while looking after everyone else at home.

Why Did Ruari Leave University?

Episode 2 does not provide the final answer, but it establishes that Ruari’s decision involves more than ordinary homesickness. When Alex brings him back to his accommodation, she spots Bridget, whom she recognizes as a friend of Mia from school. Inside Ruari’s building, his belongings have been removed from his room and placed into bags, something Alex clearly did not expect.

Ruari refuses to explain who moved his things and becomes increasingly desperate for Alex to stop asking questions. When she approaches students herself, one of them makes an insulting comment suggesting that Ruari has developed a troubling reputation. Do Alex and Patrick Become a Couple?

Their relationship takes a significant step forward in Episode 2. Patrick genuinely wants Alex, but wanting each other turns out to be easier than finding space for a relationship inside the life she already has.

That is the central joke and sadness of Youth’s premiere. Alex enters her fifties believing that she finally needs to prioritize herself, only to discover that every person in her life seems to need something at exactly the same moment. Horgan has described the series as being about the “sandwich generation,” with Alex caught between a struggling young son and ageing parents while also trying to build a future of her own.
