Why Was Bryan Barrientos Eliminated From Project Runway Season 22?

Bryan Barrientos finally reached the end of his Project Runway Season 22 run during the “Designing with the Stars” challenge, although there is still one complication before his departure can be considered completely final. Bryan was paired with Dancing With the Stars pro Emma Slater and assigned the waltz, but his finished look landed among the weakest designs of Episode 8. The judges ultimately eliminated both Bryan and Jeffrey Kelly Abess as part of the promised double elimination. Bryan’s previous immunity no longer protected him, leaving his performance in this challenge exposed in a way it had not been the previous week. Christian Siriano then revealed that he would save one of the two eliminated designers, but the episode ended before viewers learned whether Bryan or Jeffrey would return.

Bryan’s waltz look failed at the most important part of the challenge

Episode 8 was not simply asking the designers to create attractive ballroom costumes. Each designer had to interpret a specific dance while making something that could actually move with a professional dancer, meaning the clothing needed to communicate the personality of that dance before the judges even discussed construction. Bryan drew the waltz and worked with Emma Slater, giving him a style that called for movement, grace and a strong sense of elegance. His finished design used dramatic volume and textural elements, but the overall result did not clearly communicate the waltz strongly enough to keep him out of danger. That disconnect became especially obvious when compared with Jude Mikulencak’s winning quickstep design and Anna Molinari’s successful samba look, both of which translated their assigned dances more immediately.

The audience reaction during the episode followed the same basic problem. Viewers repeatedly questioned whether Bryan’s garment looked like something meant for a waltz, even when some acknowledged that they did not necessarily hate the dress as an isolated fashion piece. That is an important distinction because the challenge was not asking which designer could make the best dress without context. A garment could be reasonably attractive and still miss the assignment if it did not serve the dancer, movement or dance style. Bryan had reached the point in the competition where missing that central brief was enough to put him at serious risk.

His immunity could not rescue him this time

Bryan’s elimination also feels significant because Episode 7 had given viewers almost the opposite result. During the unconventional materials challenge, Bryan received some of the night’s weakest reactions after dressing model Liris Crosse in a difficult, heavy look involving electrical cords and a garbage-bag element. He was protected by immunity from his earlier victory in Heidi Klum’s Devil Wears Prada 2 red-carpet challenge, meaning the judges could criticize his work without sending him home. House Season 22 then defeated the returning Season 21 designers, making the question of Bryan’s immunity irrelevant to an elimination because everyone survived. Episode 8 removed both protections at once.

That created a much less forgiving situation. Heidi announced that the DWTS crossover would be a double elimination because nobody had gone home in the previous challenge, while Bryan no longer had immunity from his earlier win. He therefore needed to deliver a convincing waltz look on its own merits rather than rely on anything he had accomplished in an earlier week. When he landed in the bottom alongside Jeffrey, Naheim Muhammad and Joseph McRae, there was no automatic protection standing between him and the judges. The elimination was the first time in several episodes that a weak Bryan performance could immediately have a direct consequence.

Bryan’s season had already become controversial before Episode 8

Bryan entered the crossover challenge as one of Season 22’s most debated contestants, which is why his elimination immediately attracted more attention than a routine departure. He had clashed with Bi Pham over their professional history, survived multiple weak weeks and then unexpectedly won the Heidi Klum challenge with a sheer red-carpet gown. That victory became controversial because several viewers preferred Jeffrey or Bi’s work, while the later version Heidi actually wore also generated discussion because of the alterations made before the public appearance. The win nevertheless gave Bryan immunity, and that immunity protected him during the unconventional-materials challenge when his work again received substantial criticism.

His Episode 7 experience became even more controversial after model Liris Crosse publicly discussed how unhappy she had been with the garment and the design process. By the time Episode 8 aired, viewers were no longer judging Bryan solely on one ballroom dress. Many had been waiting to see whether the judges would continue giving him chances or finally decide that his recent work did not justify a place this close to the finale. That history does not mean the Episode 8 judges eliminated him because of fan criticism, but it explains why his departure feels larger than the elimination of an ordinary contestant.

Why were Bryan and Jeffrey both eliminated?

The double elimination was announced before the new challenge began, so Bryan and Jeffrey were not sent home because the judges suddenly decided to remove an extra designer. Season 22 had seven contestants entering Episode 8 because the previous week’s House Season 22 victory meant nobody was eliminated. Heidi therefore raised the stakes by revealing that two designers would leave after the Dancing With the Stars assignment. Anna and Jude finished at the top, Bi Pham was also declared safe, and Bryan, Jeffrey, Naheim and Joseph were left vulnerable. The judges eventually chose Bryan and Jeffrey as the two designers whose performances were not strong enough to continue automatically.

Jeffrey’s elimination is particularly important to Bryan’s story because Christian immediately complicates the result. Instead of allowing both eliminated contestants to leave, Christian announces that he is using his mentor power to save one of them. That means the judges’ decision remains clear, as both Bryan and Jeffrey were eliminated, while the actual final five remains unresolved. One of those two men will apparently receive another chance, but Episode 8 refuses to identify which one. The distinction matters when describing Bryan’s current status because “eliminated by the judges” is confirmed while “gone from Project Runway” is not yet completely settled.

Could Christian Siriano save Bryan?

Yes, Christian could still save Bryan, but Episode 8 provides no confirmed answer. The episode deliberately cuts away before Christian announces his choice, leaving Bryan and Jeffrey in the same uncertain position until the next installment resolves the twist. Bryan does have an argument for another chance because he has already won a major Season 22 challenge and has shown a distinctive point of view, even if his recent work has been inconsistent. Jeffrey has his own strong case after receiving considerable praise throughout the season and producing several looks that viewers believed deserved victories.

Any claim that Christian definitely saved Jeffrey or definitely rescued Bryan would therefore be premature. What viewers can say with certainty is that Bryan’s waltz with Emma Slater was not enough to keep him safe and that the judges placed him among the two designers eliminated from the DWTS challenge. His fate now depends entirely on a mentor’s intervention rather than the runway result itself. After weeks of immunity, controversial judging and narrow escapes, Bryan has finally reached the point where someone else must actively reverse his elimination for him to remain in the competition.
