Why Are Cara Maria and Tori Fighting on The Challenge 42? Michele and CT Drama Explained

Cara Maria Sorbello and Tori Deal have survived plenty of uncomfortable relationships on The Challenge, but Season 42 Episode 9 creates a new problem between them that is more about strategy than an old personal feud. Cara is now playing for the rebuilt Gray team, while Tori and Michele Fitzgerald remain on Orange, yet Tori and Michele still expect Cara to help protect people she has relationships with on their side. When Cara refuses to sacrifice Gray’s chances in the daily challenge, that cross-team understanding starts falling apart.

The argument becomes even messier when Michele brings CT Tamburello into it. She suggests that CT had previously helped Cara by not giving his full effort during the Episode 8 eating challenge, while Cara was unwilling to return that favor when Orange needed help. That accusation eventually reaches CT himself and turns what began as frustration with Cara into a much larger argument about alliances, loyalty and whether anyone actually threw a challenge.

Why Were Tori and Michele Angry With Cara Maria?

Episode 9 begins with the newly expanded Gray team needing a captain after Blue was dissolved and merged into Gray. Johnny Bananas and CT would have preferred Cara Maria to take that position, but Cara does not volunteer and ultimately supports Adrienne Naylor for captain instead. That decision becomes part of Tori and Michele’s frustration because Cara’s choices are no longer helping the people she previously worked with across team lines.

The bigger issue arrives during the daily challenge. Bananas tries to convince Cara to help Orange by deliberately slowing Gray down, reasoning that an Orange victory could give his team more control over the upcoming men’s elimination. Cara considers the idea but ultimately decides she does not have a strong enough reason to sabotage her new team.

Her reasoning is fairly simple. CT and Bananas are not the men she believes are most immediately vulnerable, while helping Orange would largely benefit other players such as Will Gagnon and Justin Hinsley. Cara is now wearing Gray colors, and deliberately costing that team a win would put her own teammates in a worse position.

Gray ultimately wins anyway, with Adrienne’s careful puzzle work overcoming Orange’s early advantage. That leaves Orange without the control Tori and Michele wanted and makes Cara’s refusal to help feel more important to them after the result.

Cara Overhears Tori and Michele Talking About Her

The disagreement becomes personal during the cast’s night out. Tori and Michele begin discussing Cara and questioning why she did not take the captain role or help Orange during the daily. They apparently do not realize at first that Cara is close enough to hear what is being said.

Cara eventually sits up and joins the conversation herself. She pushes back on the idea that she should have sacrificed Gray’s victory and argues that Orange’s failure was not her responsibility. The exchange quickly moves away from a simple strategic disagreement because both sides clearly have different ideas about what loyalty between teams is supposed to mean.

Tori’s position is essentially that Cara cannot expect continued cooperation from Orange while refusing to help them when they need something. Cara’s response is that she should not be expected to damage her own team simply because she has friends or allies wearing another color.

That is the real source of the fight. Cara is treating the merged Gray team as the group she may eventually need to run a final with, while Tori and Michele are still evaluating her through the cross-team relationships that existed before the merger.

Why Does Michele Bring CT Into the Argument?

Michele then makes the argument significantly more complicated by bringing up the previous week’s Mean Cuisine challenge. She suggests that CT did not perform at full effort during the eating competition because losing could help Cara Maria and the Blue team.

In Michele’s view, Orange had already taken a risk that benefited Cara. If CT was willing to reduce his effort to improve Cara’s position, she believes Cara should have been willing to return that support by helping Orange in Episode 9.

The problem is that the premise itself remains disputed. Episode 8 never confirms that CT intentionally threw Mean Cuisine, and what viewers actually saw makes that interpretation difficult to prove. CT was visibly eating throughout the challenge, while Justin struggled to contribute and Gray and Blue had deliberately worked together to give Orange some of the more difficult food choices.

That means Tori and Michele’s frustration with Cara partly rests on something CT himself does not agree happened.

Why Does Cara Tell CT What Tori and Michele Said?

After the argument, Cara speaks privately with CT and tells him that his Orange teammates believe he deliberately underperformed during the eating challenge. She also warns him that she does not think Orange values him as much as he may believe, especially with concerns being raised about his endurance before a potential final.

CT initially does not seem convinced by all of Cara’s conclusions, but the suggestion that he intentionally threw a challenge immediately bothers him. He later confronts the Orange team directly and asks whether they really believe he sabotaged them.

Michele acknowledges that she did not think CT gave his full effort, describing his performance as something closer to 60 percent. CT fires back by pointing out that he was actually eating and that Justin contributed considerably less, making it difficult to blame him alone for Orange’s loss.

The confrontation leaves CT questioning his own position on Orange while also exposing how much suspicion has developed inside what once appeared to be Season 42’s strongest team.

Did Cara Maria Throw the Episode 9 Daily?

Cara does not appear to deliberately throw the Episode 9 challenge. She considers Bananas’ proposal, and footage released before the episode shows her openly thinking through whether helping Orange would benefit her game. She ultimately concludes that she cannot justify losing on purpose simply to protect competitors who are not her closest priorities.

Gray then wins because Adrienne solves the statue arrangement while Orange loses time through mistakes of its own. Cara therefore does not have to secretly sabotage anything for the result to go against Orange.

That detail matters to the larger fight. Tori and Michele are upset because Cara refuses to actively help them, not because the episode proves Cara personally caused Orange to lose. Those are two very different things.

Are Cara Maria and Tori Enemies Now?

Episode 9 leaves their working relationship in a much worse place, but it is too early to call this a permanent feud. Tori makes it clear that if Cara does not want to cooperate with Orange, then Orange does not have to continue protecting or helping her either. Cara seems comfortable accepting that consequence rather than playing against her current team.

What changes is the assumption that Cara can comfortably maintain loyalties on both sides. With only two teams remaining, almost every daily and elimination decision now forces players to choose between helping their current team and protecting old relationships elsewhere.

That is why the Cara-Tori argument matters beyond one night at the bar. The disagreement exposes the central problem created by the Blue-Gray merger: alliances that made sense with three teams are becoming much harder to maintain with only two.

And CT’s involvement makes that divide even more dangerous. If he begins questioning whether Orange actually wants him in its final lineup, Tori and Michele may have created another loyalty problem while trying to pressure Cara over hers.
