The history of Unicorn Island has taken an unexpected turn in Netflix’s Unicorn Academy: Secrets Revealed, with the latest episodes challenging almost everything the students believed about their school’s origins. For generations, Solaira Furi has been celebrated as the first Unicorn Rider, whose extraordinary connection with Skywind supposedly gave birth to unicorn magic. However, the first four episodes of Season 2, titled Flying Free, reveal that the famous legend is not entirely true. Although the Fate Fairies finally explain what happened to Skywind, they leave one particularly important question unanswered: who was his original rider, and could it have been Queen Zephyra, the first ruler of Grimoria?
Solaira Furi Was Never Skywind’s Rider
The original story presents Solaira as a courageous young woman who arrived on Unicorn Island and developed an extraordinary friendship with Skywind. Their connection supposedly created the first magical bond between a human and a unicorn, earning them special gifts from the Fate Fairies. Skywind received his magnificent wings, while Solaira was given the Fairy Tiara, which allowed her to use magic. According to the familiar version of events, their partnership ended when Queen Zephyra broke their bond during a confrontation, causing Skywind to disappear.
The first indication that something is wrong with this account appears in Episode 1, when Sophia and the Sapphires begin receiving mysterious visions of Skywind. While examining these memories through an Imaginorb, they witness the legendary unicorn flying with someone who does not appear to be Solaira. Valentina immediately notices the contradiction, since her family’s entire history depends on the belief that Solaira was Skywind’s rider. Although the group cannot identify the mysterious person, the vision establishes that someone important has been left out of the story.

The Fate Fairies Reveal the Truth
Episode 4, “Forced Friendly Fun,” finally provides an explanation when the Sapphires travel to Fate Fairy Island with their new Grimorian companion, Zaya. After gaining an audience with the fairies, they discover that Skywind was hidden away for his own protection, but not because of Queen Zephyra. The fairies explain that Solaira founded Unicorn Academy without ever becoming a Unicorn Rider herself. Skywind already had a genuine rider, and Solaira deliberately separated them because she wanted the powerful unicorn for herself.
The fairies intervened and placed Skywind under an enchanted sleep to protect him from Solaira and the consequences of his heartbreak. Their account confirms that the celebrated founder was responsible for breaking a bond rather than creating the one attributed to her. Nevertheless, the fairies never reveal the identity of the person Skywind originally loved and trusted. This omission becomes especially intriguing because the earlier visions clearly show that the missing rider was central to the events that changed Unicorn Island’s history.
Could Queen Zephyra Be Skywind’s First Rider?
Queen Zephyra is a compelling possibility, particularly because the new episodes reveal that her relationship with Solaira was more complicated than the academy’s history books suggest. In Episode 2, Layla discovers that Zephyra was responsible for creating grim magic by altering unicorn magic. Another incomplete historical account suggests that Solaira and Zephyra were once friends, despite eventually becoming opponents. Sophia even considers whether Solaira’s friendship with the future Grimorian queen allowed Zephyra to gain access to unicorn magic in the first place.
If Zephyra originally shared a bond with Skywind, Solaira’s interference could explain why their friendship deteriorated so dramatically. It would also give the conflict between Unicorn Island and Grimoria a far more personal origin than the students have been taught. Interestingly, Ravenzella tells Zaya in Episode 3 that Skywind betrayed Zephyra and that Solaira conspired against the Grimorian queen. Although Ravenzella’s version is hardly an impartial historical account, it suggests that Grimoria remembers the same events very differently. However, neither the visions nor the Fate Fairies confirm that Zephyra was Skywind’s original rider, so this remains a theory rather than an established revelation.
Could Skywind’s First Rider Be Someone Else?
Another possibility is that Skywind belonged to someone whose identity has been completely erased from the island’s official history. The mysterious figure seen in the first episode’s vision is never identified by name, and the surviving historical records are incomplete. There is also no confirmation that Zephyra ever rode Skywind or formed a magical bond with him. The missing rider could therefore have been another early inhabitant of Unicorn Island, possibly someone whose story became entangled with Solaira and Zephyra’s conflict.
Zaya’s introduction adds another interesting dimension to this mystery. Despite being a Grimorian and Ravenzella’s niece, she experiences visions of Skywind similar to those received by the Sapphires, suggesting that the unicorn’s call extends beyond Unicorn Academy. Her growing friendship with Ava also challenges the assumption that Grimorians and Unicorn Riders must always remain enemies. This does not establish a family connection between Zaya and Skywind’s original rider, but it raises the possibility that Grimoria holds important information about the forgotten bond.
Will Skywind’s Original Rider Be Revealed?
The identity of Skywind’s first rider matters because his broken bond is now affecting every unicorn on the island. The Fate Fairies explain that Skywind is the father of unicorn magic, and his emotional distress is responsible for the unusual natural disturbances threatening the academy. His sleeping spell is weakening, and if his connection to magic disappears, all unicorns could lose their powers. Understanding who originally bonded with him may therefore be essential to helping Skywind recover, rather than simply finding his hidden floating island.
As Episode 4 concludes, the Sapphires know where to search for Skywind, but they have not yet discovered the full circumstances of Solaira’s betrayal. Zephyra remains a strong candidate for his original rider because of her history with Solaira, her connection to unicorn magic, and Grimoria’s conflicting account of the past. Still, the series has deliberately stopped short of confirming that theory, leaving room for another character to emerge from the forgotten history of Unicorn Island. With four more episodes of Flying Free scheduled for spring 2027, Skywind’s original rider is likely to remain one of the central mysteries as the students attempt to restore his connection to magic.
