The magic of Unicorn Island has always depended on the extraordinary connection between unicorns and their riders. However, the latest chapter of Netflix’s animated fantasy series, Unicorn Academy: Secrets Revealed, suggests that the island’s most celebrated bond may have been built on a lie. Season 2, titled Flying Free, brings Sophia Mendoza and the Sapphires back for another adventure, this time involving mysterious earthquakes, a legendary winged unicorn, and a surprising friendship with someone from Grimoria. Across the first four episodes, the students discover that saving their school will require them to confront a history that even their teachers do not fully understand.

Skywind’s Visions and the Earthquakes

Episode 1, “Winged Wonders,” begins with the Sapphires enjoying their newly acquired ability to fly alongside their unicorns. While Sophia and Wildstar have become comfortable in the air, Isabel is struggling to adjust, despite being an excellent rider on the ground. Their outing near Starglow Lake takes an unexpected turn when an earthquake shakes Unicorn Island, putting several Dwerpins in danger. The students help them reach safety, but the incident raises concerns because earthquakes are practically unheard of on the island. Shortly afterward, Sophia and Wildstar experience a strange vision involving Skywind, the legendary winged unicorn believed to have disappeared long ago.

Back at the academy, Ms. Primrose becomes increasingly concerned about the unexplained disturbances, while Valentina continues struggling with the consequences of her cousin Serena’s recent actions. Meanwhile, the mysterious visions begin appearing to the other Sapphires, suggesting that Skywind is somehow communicating with them through their unicorns. Layla brings an Imaginorb from the library, allowing everyone to project their memories and examine what they have seen. The images show Solaira Furi, the Fairy Tiara, Queen Zephyra, and Skywind, but one vision presents an unsettling contradiction: Skywind appears with a rider who does not seem to be Solaira. With another earthquake threatening the academy’s safety, Sophia realizes that finding Skywind may be their only chance to prevent the school from closing.

Valentina Questions the Furi Legend

The mystery deepens in Episode 2, “Seeing Red,” when an unusual heatwave spreads across Unicorn Island. The Sapphires help a herd of wild unicorns find relief, and Valentina has an emotional reunion with Encore, Serena’s former unicorn. Although Serena has returned to her family, Valentina remains troubled by everything that happened and worries that her family’s reputation may never recover. Her frustration becomes particularly noticeable during a class assignment involving newly hatched armaditto pups, creatures that absorb the emotions of those around them. As the students struggle to control their feelings, the pups become increasingly difficult to manage, eventually forcing Valentina to admit how frightened she is of discovering something unpleasant about her ancestors.

While the others reassure Valentina that their friendship does not depend on her family’s history, Layla’s research produces exactly the sort of discovery she has been dreading. An incomplete and disputed account of the island’s past suggests that Solaira Furi and Zephyra, the original queen of Grimoria, were once friends. The students also learn that Zephyra apparently created grim magic by twisting unicorn magic, raising questions about how she gained access to it. Another passage describes Skywind fleeing to a palace in the sky after a broken bond, giving the Sapphires their first possible clue to his whereabouts. The episode also introduces Zaya, a young Grimorian whom Ava encounters near the forbidden Shimmerstone Wall while searching for a runaway armaditto.

Ava’s Secret Friendship With Zaya

Ava’s meeting with Zaya introduces a different perspective on the long-standing conflict between Unicorn Riders and Grimorians. Zaya initially believes the riders are dangerous, while Ava has been taught to distrust anyone associated with Ravenzella. However, their shared concern for the armaditto and their affection for animals help them recognize that neither is quite what the other expected. Zaya’s little companion, Muna, quickly becomes comfortable around Ava and Leaf, and an unlikely friendship begins to develop. Unfortunately, Sophia witnesses part of their encounter and assumes Ava is in trouble, making it difficult for Ava to explain why she wants to know Zaya better.

Episode 3, “Tale of the Vampicorn,” takes the Sapphires on a camping expedition after Rory and Layla spot a mysterious shimmering shape in the sky during a powerful windstorm. Believing it could be the floating palace mentioned in the old legend, the group decides to remain nearby and watch for its return. Rory uses the opportunity to entertain everyone with a supposedly frightening story about a Vampicorn, although the strange noises and appearances eventually turn out to be part of a performance he has created using Storm’s weather magic. Ava, meanwhile, repeatedly slips away from camp to meet Zaya, who reveals that she has also been experiencing visions of Skywind. The two compare what they have seen, realizing that the legendary unicorn’s situation may concern Grimoria just as much as Unicorn Island.

Their growing friendship creates trouble when Ava becomes trapped while returning to camp, prompting Zaya to come to her rescue. Sophia and the others arrive without understanding what is happening and immediately assume the Grimorian is responsible for Ava’s predicament. The confrontation escalates until Ava finally admits that Zaya is her friend, leaving the Sapphires stunned. Before they can properly discuss the revelation, Zaya experiences another powerful vision, and an entirely new disturbance begins to shake the surroundings. The episode ends with the group facing a problem that can no longer be dismissed as an unusual change in the weather.

The Journey to Fate Fairy Island

Episode 4, “Forced Friendly Fun,” opens as enormous rocks begin falling from the sky, forcing everyone to seek shelter. Zaya helps Rory during the confusion, providing further evidence that she is not interested in causing trouble. When she explains that her vision showed Fate Fairies carrying Skywind into the sky, the Sapphires realize that the fairies may know where he has been hidden. They decide to travel to Fate Fairy Island, although Sophia and Valentina remain deeply suspicious of their new companion. Since Zaya refuses to ride a unicorn and Sophia strongly objects to the idea, the group must make the journey together on foot.

The trip gradually challenges the assumptions that both sides have grown up believing. Zaya reveals that she once encountered Sophia’s father, Miles Mendoza, in Grimoria, where he helped care for Muna after the little creature injured her paw. Sophia is surprised to learn that her father treated Zaya kindly, particularly because Zaya had previously believed that Unicorn Riders were dangerous. Another magical disturbance confirms that Skywind’s condition is worsening, while Ravenzella’s follower Crimsette secretly keeps track of the group’s movements. Upon reaching Fate Fairy Island, the students initially struggle to attract the fairies’ attention, but their growing willingness to accept Zaya eventually helps them gain an audience.

Solaira Furi’s Secret Is Revealed

The Fate Fairies finally reveal the truth, completely overturning the history taught at Unicorn Academy. Solaira Furi did establish the school, but she was never a true Unicorn Rider, despite generations of stories celebrating her supposed bond with Skywind. According to the fairies, Skywind already had another rider, and Solaira deliberately broke that connection because she wanted the legendary unicorn for herself. The fairies intervened to protect Skywind, eventually hiding him away under a sleeping spell. His disappearance was therefore not the result of Zephyra breaking his bond with Solaira, as the familiar legend had claimed.

For Valentina, the revelation is especially painful because the Furi family’s identity has been built around Solaira’s supposed accomplishments. Her ancestor was not simply misunderstood or unfairly remembered; she had concealed a fundamental truth about the origins of Unicorn Academy. The earlier discovery about Solaira’s friendship with Zephyra also becomes more troubling, particularly because Zephyra was responsible for transforming unicorn magic into grim magic. However, the complete circumstances surrounding that transformation remain unclear, and the fairies do not identify Skywind’s original rider. What the students now know is that the familiar division between heroic Unicorn Riders and villainous Grimorians has a far more complicated history than either side acknowledges.

Ending Explained: Where Is Skywind?

The Fate Fairies explain that Skywind is not an ordinary unicorn but the father of unicorn magic, making his emotional connection to the island unusually powerful. After Solaira separated him from his true rider, his heartbreak became so overwhelming that the fairies placed him in an enchanted sleep to protect both him and Unicorn Island. Unfortunately, the spell has begun to weaken, allowing Skywind’s distress to produce the earthquakes, heatwave, and violent storms experienced throughout the four episodes. Once he awakens fully, those disturbances could become uncontrollable, and there is an even greater consequence: if Skywind loses his connection to magic, every unicorn could lose its magical abilities. Rescuing him is therefore no longer simply about recovering a legendary creature, but preserving the magic on which the island depends.

The fairies also disclose that Skywind has been hidden on a floating island accessible only during the transitional hours of dawn and dusk. This explains why the Sapphires repeatedly saw a shimmering structure in the sky but could never reach it before it disappeared. Armed with this information, Sophia and her friends prepare to find Skywind and help him before the weakening spell causes further trouble. However, the closing moments introduce another complication when Crimsette appears and reveals that Zaya is Ravenzella’s niece. The discovery shocks the Sapphires, who suddenly realize that their new companion has a direct family connection to their greatest adversary.

Although Crimsette believes the information will please Ravenzella, Zaya’s friendship with Ava suggests that her loyalties may not be as straightforward as her family expects. She has shown genuine concern for Skywind and has repeatedly helped the Sapphires, even when doing so placed her at odds with the beliefs she grew up with. Nevertheless, Ravenzella’s side now knows how to reach the legendary unicorn, placing the next stage of the rescue in jeopardy. The fourth episode concludes without Skywind being found, leaving the identity of his original rider, the full extent of Solaira’s actions, and Zaya’s ultimate allegiance unresolved. With the remaining four episodes of Flying Free scheduled for spring 2027, the story is positioned to explore whether the broken bond at the heart of Unicorn Island’s history can finally be healed.
