Aaliyah Puglia entered “Survivor 51” believing that adaptability would be one of her biggest strengths. The 24-year-old chef had already moved between different cities, traveled on her own and built a career in demanding professional kitchens, experiences she believed would translate well to a game built around uncertainty. Her time in Fiji, however, ended much sooner than she anticipated. After Toka lost the season’s first immunity challenge, Aaliyah became one of two primary targets alongside Jenna Doore and was ultimately the first contestant voted out.
Although her Survivor journey lasted only through the premiere, Aaliyah had already begun building important relationships before her elimination. Away from the island, her story is largely connected to food. From studying culinary nutrition to working in professional kitchens and preparing food in the world of professional sports, Aaliyah had developed an interesting career before becoming part of Survivor’s “Open Era.”
Aaliyah Puglia is a Chef From Rhode Island
Aaliyah was 24 when she joined the cast of “Survivor 51.” She is originally from Gloucester City, New Jersey, while CBS listed Providence, Rhode Island, as her current residence when announcing the season’s cast.

Her childhood and early adulthood involved considerable change. In her Survivor biography, Aaliyah explained that she grew up in a small New Jersey town before moving to Miami when she was 13. She later relocated to Rhode Island for college despite not knowing anyone there.
Those experiences became an important part of how she viewed herself entering Survivor. Rather than being intimidated by suddenly finding herself around strangers in an unfamiliar environment, she believed she had spent much of her life learning how to adjust to new situations. She described herself with three words before the season: “confident, wise, sporadic.”
That combination also helps explain the game Aaliyah intended to play. She identified Yam Yam Arocho as a Survivor contestant she related to because of his humor and ability to remain calculated despite having a big personality. When discussing the type of game she hoped to play, however, she pointed toward Cirie Fields and her ability to quietly work different strategic angles.
Cooking Became Aaliyah’s Career
Aaliyah’s professional life before Survivor was already centered on cooking. She attended Johnson & Wales University, an institution particularly well known for its culinary programs, and reportedly earned a bachelor’s degree in Culinary Nutrition in 2023.
Her background therefore extends beyond simply preparing dishes. Culinary nutrition combines food preparation with an understanding of nutrition, an area that appears to have influenced some of her subsequent professional work.
Aaliyah built experience through several culinary positions. Her reported work history includes time at Chez Pascal, Migis Lodge and Johnson & Wales University. She also worked as a lead line cook at Bayberry Garden and later as a junior sous chef at The Little Harbor Club. Her career eventually took her into professional sports as well.
Aaliyah Worked as a Chef for the New England Patriots
One of the more interesting parts of Aaliyah’s resume is her connection to the New England Patriots.
Before appearing on Survivor, Aaliyah reportedly spent a season working as a chef with the Patriots at Gillette Stadium. The position involved preparing food for players in a professional sports environment, adding another high-pressure kitchen to her resume.

The experience also fits with something Aaliyah emphasized before entering Survivor: working in a kitchen can involve considerably more than cooking.
Professional kitchens require people to communicate under pressure, deal with different personalities and quickly react when plans change. Aaliyah believed those social skills could help her navigate Survivor, where relationships can be just as important as challenge performance.
When CBS introduced her to viewers, she spoke about enjoying the experience of watching people eat food she had prepared. Cooking was not presented simply as her occupation, but as an important part of how she connected with other people.
Where Is Aaliyah Puglia Now?
Following her Survivor experience, Aaliyah has remained involved in the food industry. Recent information about her professional career identifies her as a freelance food consultant with Essential Eats. Her broader resume reflects experience across restaurants, hospitality and professional sports, giving her several different areas of the culinary industry to draw from.
Providence has also been an important part of her adult life. She originally arrived in Rhode Island for college and was still listed as living in Providence when CBS announced her as a Survivor 51 contestant.
Aaliyah also has a public social media presence connected with her interest in food. Her Instagram account is listed as @aaliyah.makes.menus, a fitting name considering the career she has built around cooking.
Why Was Aaliyah Voted Out of Survivor 51?
Aaliyah’s elimination was not inevitable when the game began. During the initial marooning, before the castaways had even been divided into tribes, she was already making connections. She and Devin Way appeared particularly close, and a small group began taking shape that Angelica “Jelly” Loblack later referred to as the “Helicopter Alliance.” Things changed once Toka lost the first immunity challenge.
Aaliyah struggled during part of the challenge, making her an easy alternative when attention initially centered on Jenna Doore. Jenna had appeared guarded around her tribemates, and Devin became convinced that she could eventually become a dangerous player. For a period, Jenna seemed positioned to become the first person eliminated. Patt Cannaday, however, warned Jenna that she was being targeted.
Jenna subsequently learned that Aaliyah could become the alternative and told Brady Booker that Aaliyah had described him as aggressive and intense. With Brady and Devin already clashing over their approaches to the game, the vote increasingly became divided between the two women.
The uncertainty continued at Tribal Council. Devin openly pushed for Jenna, while Patt publicly brought Aaliyah’s name into the discussion. The tribe eventually broke into side conversations as players reconsidered where their votes should go.
Both Aaliyah and Jenna understood that they were vulnerable and played their Shots in the Dark. Neither received safety. Aaliyah was then eliminated in a 6-2 vote, making her the first person voted out of Survivor 51.
In her elimination confessional, Aaliyah acknowledged that she had overestimated how prepared she was to play Survivor. She also specifically recognized Jelly and Devin as her closest allies and credited them for trying to keep her in the game.
Her early exit means viewers never got to see the adaptable, multi-angle strategy she envisioned before arriving in Fiji. Still, Survivor introduced a wider audience to a young chef whose life outside the show had already taken her from New Jersey to Miami and Rhode Island, through culinary school, restaurant kitchens and even the professional sports world.
